Hi,

I'm interested in this guy as his daughter Elizabeth married William Coningham, who was a key figure ina biography I am writing. Attached below is what I have on him. I'd be interested in any ionformation or leads you may have. If you want to contact me directly, please use william@battersbyfamily.com.

William Meyrick - born 17th July 1768, eldest son of the Rev. Owen Lewis, Rector of Holsworth, who was born in 1758. Educated Manchester Grammar School and attended St. John's College, Cambridge Michaelmas term , 31st January, 1788, awarded BA in 1792 and MA in 1803

Chaplain to the Earl of Malmesbury .Earl of Malmesbury (Earl of Malmesbury was created in 1800 for the diplomat James Harris, 1st Baron Malmesbury. The son of the grammarian and politician James Harris, he served as Ambassador to Spain, Prussia, Russia and France and also represented Christchurch in the House of Commons. Harris had already been created Baron Malmesbury, of Malmesbury in the County of Wiltshire, in 1788, and was made Viscount FitzHarris, of Hurn Court in the County of Southampton, at the same time he was given the earldom. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Earl. He sat as Member of Parliament for Helston, Horsham, Heytesbury and Wilton. His eldest son, the third Earl, was a prominent Conservative politician. He served as Foreign Secretary in 1852 and from 1858 to 1859 and was also Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords. Lord Malmesbury died childless and was succeeded ...Two other members of the Harris family have also gained distinction. The aforementioned the Hon. Sir Edward Alfred John Harris (1808-1888), second son of the second Earl, was an Admiral in the Royal Navy, held several diplomatic posts and represented Christchurch in Parliament. The Right Reverend the Hon. Charles Amyand Harris (1813-1874), third son of the second Earl, was a clergyman and served as Bishop of Gibraltar from 1868 to 1873. (Wikipedia)

Vicar of Taynton, Oxon from 1810 to 1814

Possessed of considerable wealth, being owner of Woodgates Manor, Dorset, Woodland, Wilts and Rolleston, near Exeter .

Married, July 29, 1797, Marianne, daughter of Francis Wishaw, of Aston Hall, Herts. They had at least two children including Hester, born c. 1800 at Wick Hill House, Gloucestershire and Elizabeth Catherine (who married William Coningham) born c. 1815 at Burford, Oxon. In 1881 Hester Meyrick was a spinster living with William Coningham at his house at 6, Lewis Square, Brighton.

There seems to have been a third child, Hester-Anne Meyrick, who according to the baptismal records was born on 3rd August, 1794, which was three years before her parends were married. Was she the illegitimate child of Mary-Anne Wishaw, perhaps with a different father than Rev. William Meyrick?

During the latter part of his life resided at Bath and died there on 13th May 1842. Buried at Kelston, Somerset, where there is an alter tomb with the inscription “Beneath are laid the remains of The Rev. William Meyrick, MA”

Hope that helps and look forward to hearing from you,

Best regards,

William

Rev. William Meyrick (or Mayrick)

Hi all,

Anyone got ANYTHING on the following family? This is the info I've got so far, some of which may be wrong. I'd be extremely grateful for any comments or suggestions:

Rev. William Meyrick was born at Holsworthy in Devon (UK) on 17 July 1768 (christened 20/11/1768). He was the son of Rev. Owen Lewis Meyrick and his wife Elizabeth. He attended Manchester Grammar School and entered St. John's College Cambridge in 1788. He was chaplain to the Earl of Malmesbury and Vicar of Taynton in Oxon 1810-1814. He was wealthy in his own right owning Woodgates Manor in Dorset, Woodland in Wilts and Rolleston near Exeter.

Rev. Meyrick married Marianne (or Mary Anne), daughter of Francis Wishaw of Aston Hall, Herts. on July 29, 1797. Latterly he lived in Bath, where he died on 13th May, 1842 and he is buried at Kelston in Somerset.

He seems to have had at least two children - a daughter Hester who was born at Wick Hill House Gloucester (or alternatively at Burford, oxon) and who was unmarried. She was still alive in 1881 when she appeared on the 1881 Census in the household of William Coningham in Brighton. Rev. Meyrick also appears to have had another daughter, Hester-Anne or Anne, who appears to have been born on 3rd August 1794 (before the Rev. Meyrick was married?) and not christened until 26th Feb 1801? This woman appears to have married someone surnamed Fitzjames or Fitz-James and died early some time between 1812 and about 1820.

I'd be most grateful for any thoughts, comments or help on amy of the people mentioned here or any advice on any further sources.

I have been looking at a distant branch of my BRISCOE family that spent some time in Gloucestershire.

One married a MERRICK, all her siblings had "Meyrick" as one of the first names as did others in her family.
Richard MEYRICK, born 1822-1824 in Wales

My second ggf was Richard MEYRICK, b. 1822-1824 in Wales, d. 7 Dec 1893 in Jellico, Campbell Co., TN. He probably came to the USA ca. 1849-1850. He married abt. 1852, probably in Schuylkill Co., PA, Margaret WILLIAMS, b. 23 Mar 1835 in Wales, d. 19 Jul 1871 in Schuylkill Co., PA, d/o Evan and Mary WILLIAMS.

Possibilities include:
(1) Richard MEYRICK, christened 11 Mar 1823 at Ewenny, Glamorgan, Wales as son of Rees & Lovic(sp?) MEYRICK. There was a marriage of a Rees MEYRICK to Lovic (sp?) PEADOW at Ewenny in 1820. The only Rees MEYRICK of the right age in the 1841 Glamorgan census was Rees MEYRICK, b. abt. 1797 in Glamorgan, d. 5 Jun 1856 in Margam, Neath District, Glamorgan. In 1841, Rees was married to wife, Catherine. There was a marriage of a Rees MEYRICK to Catherine MORGAN 20 Apr 1822 in Newcastle, Glamorgan. Catherine may have been Rees' second wife, and Lovic (sp?) may have died during or shortly after childbirth with Richard. Richard was not christened until 1823, so his christening may have been delayed, and his birth may have been in 1821. There is a possibly related individual, Thomas MEYRICK, b. abt. 1816 in Ewenny, Glamorgan, who married 1 Aug 1837 in Llantwit Fardre, Glamorgan, Hesther/Esther JONES. Thomas' first son was named Rees. My Richard's first son was named Thomas.

(2) Richard MEYRICK, b. 16 Aug 1825 and christened 10 Sep 1825 in Llanddarog, Carmarthen, Wales, son of James MEYRICK and Anne SAMUEL.

I am interested in any possible connections with other MEYRICK families
