My mother told me of a route many used to cross and called it the Vermont Trail. Timing mattered because of water levels on some river. I recently decided to go and tackle a literally 7 foot high stack of paper notes compiled over the last 30 years of research, discovering not only I need to take time to update all the facts I found and never adjusted. Somewhere in that stack is a story about the Vermont Trail, Also many Ontario kin have family in states like Maine, Vermont, NH, , THE WHITE MOUNTAINs area,Mass, Ct, NY, really any boarding the Great Lakes. I sure a google research may help too. My mother went up every year via train mostly and her recollections would have been 1930's and 40's. When I find the stuff I found on it will forward. If love History read about the Great Fire in late 1700 in lower Can. Grosse Island is a must too! Respectfully, a fellow lifetime researcher

Hello, I don't think I am a match for you. My Grandmother was Catherine "Kate" Townsend Mulligan who was married to Peter J Mulligan and they lived in Lowell where she died and he died in Boston area. They had 6 children but the reverse in numbers two boys and 4 girls. Francis, Donald, Kathleen, Anna, Gertrude and Alice. The only Morgan reference is Donald my father was married to Kathleen Moran Mulligan and she had a sister Marion Helen Moran who's second husband was Charles Earl Morgan. No children from that marriage.

I have been searching my great great great grandmother Kate Mulligan. Do you have timeline and locale you could share? Is it possible to get help? Kate had 4 or 5 sons and at least 2 daughters. Husband Thomas Mulligan, farmer. John J was born around 1863 and was a middle child. How and where Kate came in not sure. Area lived in CT close to Mass and NY, so could be more than one state census. Catholic I believe but not sure. Irish for Thomas. Someone on that part of trunk was to be Brit but have not found as yet. Possibly Kate. Also, why for I find no reason, Morgan was to be a family name. Ant help would be most welcome

Mary Ellen Mulligan and Mulligans of Rathfarnham, Dublin

Hello,

We are trying to track down family members of a Mulligan line, associated primarily with Rathfarnham, Dublin, but, possible from other areas of Ireland (i.e. Co. Meath).

My Great Grandmother was called Mary Ellen Mulligan and came from Ireland. The story goes that she moved to the North East of England at the age of 16 (around 1911) from Dublin. Whether or not she came with her parents is something we don't know.

We think that we've found an irish census detailing parents Patrick and Margret Mulligan, and we are pleased with this - but know next to nothing else of them.

There was talk of an "Aunt Min", but we are unsure who this was. She was probably a Mulligan, but we don't know.

Other details that might help;

Mary Ellen Mulligan married Thomas Mallett (1895-1986) and they had six children, one of which is my Grandmother, Catherine Ross (nee. Mallett).

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Thank you for your reply. I'll record those names and get in touch again if I come up with any leads for you. What do you mean, in your last sentence, when you write that they used the Vermont trail to cross? To cross from Ontario into Vermont? And is "Vermont trail" an actual (geographic) route, as in "Vermont Trail"?

Do any of you have connections to Mulligan families in central Vermont or Springfield MA? Trying to expand my Mulligan tree beyond William Patrick MULLIGAN, who came to the US as a small boy in the 1840s. He married a Vermont Yankee, Lettie BROWN of Worcester VT. I think the rest of the family stayed in the Springfield area of Massachusetts. "Bill" Mulligan worked in the "stone sheds" (granite quarries) in Barre VT most of his adult life. He and Lettie had only one child, daughter Lorraine Mulligan DOUGLAS.

thanks for your reply

Believe this Mulligan family migrated from Ireland to US and settled in Ohio, as did our Kelley and O'Connell ancestry.

1860 census of Portsmouth, Scioto County OH:
Edward Mulligan, 62, b Ireland, shoemaker
Catherine, 59, b IR
Edward, 26, b IR, carpenter
Eliza, 21, b IR
Harriette, 18, b IR

We believe this is the parents/family of Harriet Mulligan Prendergast. Also very likely that Edward Kenrick married Eliza(Elizabeth) Mulligan.

1870 Scioto County OH
Edward Mulligan, 36, b Ireland, works in shoe factory
Mary, 29, b OH
Mary Galliece, 12, b OH, attending school

1880 census shows Edward and Mary Mulligan with Lizzie Galliece, 21 in their household.
Edward Mulligan worked in shoe factory and wife Mary was a school teacher.

Edward Mulligan must have died between 1880 and 1900.
1900 census of Scioto County shows Mary A Mulligan, 61, b IR(?), and Margaret Kelley, 20, b IR.
1910 census includes Mary Mulligan, 71, b OH, parents GR, and Margaret Kelley, 31, b IR.
My Gt. Gt. Grandfather, born about 1821,
was an Edward Mulligan, married to Martha. He came from Arklow but moved to Avoca, Co Wicklow where my Grandfather grew up. I doubt there is any connection apart from the family at that time being Catholic and Avoca is fairly near to Dublin. However you never know although there were probably quite a lot of Edward Mulligans.
Cathy

Hi,
I was told that my Mulligan grandmother from Roscommon (her parents were Dominic Mulligan and Winifred O'Brien) had Doherty relatives. We don't think that the Mulligans were from Roscommon originally but Mayo is very near Roscommon. It is possible that Dominic Mulligan was a twin.
The O'Briens were from French Park while the Mulligans (my gm and sibs were born between 1886 and 1904) lived in Loughglynn, Roscommon before 1910. Dominic was a shopkeeper. After Dominic and Winifred Mulligan died, my gm and sibs were separated and sent to relatives; and two of the girls were sent to local orphanages/industrial schools. The five sibs (four daughters and one son) emigrated to America about 1907.
Do you think there is a connection?
Thank you.
Kathy

What I have is limited, just received it last night.

If this is the right Thomas Mulligan, he was born Thomas Mergan.

His father is Patrick Mergan, born about 1820, in Ireland.
His mother is Margaret Mulligan, born about 1823, in Ireland.

They appear in the 1860 Census, in Galena Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. All were then listed as Mergan.

However, in the 1870 Census, only Margaret and the kids were listed (all as Mulligan's).

I am following up for additional information.

You can contact me directly at dj_sullivan03@yahoo.com, we can keep each other up-dated.

Hi David,

I have a John Mulligan and Mary Ann Huxley from the Toronto area. John's father was Joseph Mulligan who settled in Toronto in the early 1800's. John and Mary Ann's daughter was Martha Mulligan (my great great grandmother) who lived in Brantford with her husband William McMurray in the year 1864. Before that Martha owned a Millinery Shop in Bobcageon, Ontario. It's all very confusing...not sure how they ended up in Brantford or Bobcageon. How about your ancestors....

nrewen,
My wife and I are looking for any information at all on the Mulligan family that settled in Brantford Ontario. We have visited the Mulligan cemetery there, and know that William and Mary Jarvis Mulligan came from County Tyrone. That is as far back as we can get, even after searching through countless census books in County Tyrone. Any help you might have would be appreciated. We would be glad to share what we have. Thanks.
David C.
