My great-grandmother, Dorcie Hoskinson (Short, & Spears by first marriage) recently passed and I have been trying since to track our ancestry.

Here's what I know for a fact from her:
Her parents were Charlie Short and Arizona Mullins. They lived (during her youth and early adult years) in Pike County, KY (specifically "Praise" and "Lower Elkhorn"). Family information is that Arizona's mother(given name of "Nicotye") was 100% Native American (no tribe specified) and that Arizona's mother passed away during childbirth.

Here's what I have formulated:
Arizona's parent's were Spencer "Mage" Mullins (b 1865, either VA or WV) and Nicotye (b 1875 KY). I have census records showing Mage and "L A N" with most of their children on the 1900 records. However, I also have a marriage record showing that "Spencer" and "Nicotye" married in Pike, KY in 1889 (but this is after all but 2 of their children... I don't know if that is 'normal'). I believe their children are Arizona (b 1892), George (b 1894-98), William Patrick (b 1897-1901), Mary Jane (b 1899-1903) and Leona (b 1905). The reason for the discrepancies is their age differential from the 1900 and then 1910 census. Of note, "LAN" is not listed on the 1910 census (which seems to coincide w/ her death).

I'm trying to find anything additional on Nicotye/LAN at all. I have found her NO WHERE outside of the marriage record and 1900 census. Of note, the 1900 census reflects that her parents are from VA and that she does NOT read, write, NOR SPEAK English.

I believe that my Spencer above is the son of Simpson and Mahala (Reed). I base this information on locations and timelines for both families as the 1880 census shows "Spencer" living at home and the 1900 census shows "Mage" with LAN (all listed above) living 'next door' to Simpson and some of his remaining family (similarly for 1910 census wherein one of Simpson's sons appear to have taken over as head of house).

In 1920 it looks like yet another son has taken over the Simpson Mullins homestead whereas my Mage/Simpson and youngest Leona are nowhere to be found while, apparently, Mary Jane (whom I believe married Ornico Green) is now living on that homestead with husband, child, and brothers William Patrick and George.

Anything that anyone can provide - anything at all - would be helpful. Though I am primarily focused on Nicotye at the moment, I would also love to know what happened to Leona and Mage. Thanks in advance.

Of note, I found a death record for Mage... but it was spelled "madge"; remaining info matches!
