HI--I'm tracing my family and along the way discovered a link to the Ogletree clan of Georgia. I'm wondering if the name connects to any Native Americans.

My GGG Grandfather, Absalom Ogletree (b. 1775), son of John Ogletree, Sr. (b. c. 1739), married a full-blooded Cherokee (most likely in Wilkes Co., GA). There were other Ogletree's in Tennessee who married Cherokee's also.

Hi Tom,

The U.S. government has all sorts of lists of people who were or who were related to Cherokees (and of course, other Indian tribes). I understand that there are some census-type lists available. There are also lists of those who applied for pensions (or other cash rewards) based on Cherokee relations. This information came from reading Native Peoples Magazine, which I subscribe to. I can't remember any of the details but there must be some place where we can find out more information.

I think that the best thing to do is to find out some names (i.e., what Ogletree married what Indian person). With that information I think that we could probably move forward. I don't have any names other than my GGG Grandfather (Absalom b. 1778 not 1775 as I indicated in an earlier post). Dan Ogletree has done some research into the Ogletree's of Tennessee and some of those married into the Cherokees.

Keep me posted.
