Any info on Peytons in Ireland around 1790-1820?

Andy Peyton  (View posts) Posted: 17 Jun 1999 7:06AM GMT
I'm trying to find any leads to Peytons who lived in Ireland (probably around Dublin) in the late 1700's or early 1800's. Any information that you have would be really great as I seem to be stuck. I have a GG Grandfather and GGG Grandmother who said they were born there. Their names are Stanley Lees Peyton (born abt 1815) and Jane Peyton (born abt 1790).

I would like to try and build a picture of what Peytons were there at the time to try and make my search directions a bit more focussed.

Thanks in advance,
Andy.

Irish PEYTON families

Hello, Andy
Forgive me if I have written to you before, I cannot remember if I have.
Most Irish Peytons are probably descended from Christopher Peyton. The families settled primarily in Leitrim (Laheen). My grgrgrgrandfather was Peyton Johnston of Ballymahon, Longford who died 1821 or so. I have yet to make the link to known Peytons.
I think there may be a link to the following families, FOX,SHEILS,ROCHFORT. Peytons tended to settle in Virginia, not many went to Canada.
If you find any link between Peyton, FOX SHEILS or ROCHFORT, please let me know.
Bette

Andy – This might help you. I don’t know about a Stanley Lees Peyton, but below is my family tree and I can trace my Peyton family connection from early English times to Dublin (1820-1848). The Peyton family was renowned around 1500 AD as excellent managers of large estates and were employed by English Royalty to manage large farms. In the process sons of Christopher Peyton married the daughters of Earls and Dukes, cousins to royal family. Through these connections they became stockholders in the Plymouth Company – the same company that financed the Mayflower. Before the American adventure (stockholders in the 16th Century were called ‘venturers’) the English Throne had for centuries tried to ‘quite’ Ireland. To do this around 1550 they began to establish a Plantation System, providing English familes
that had the ‘right connections’ large estates. The Peyton family was one of these. They got into Ireland first, but are also part of early Virginia plantation claims. The Peyton’s that were to Ireland were descendents of Edward the III, (through the Boucher family-see below) and his son Prince Thomas of Woodstock – who was murdered by Richard II (his Nephew) and brother –in Law to his Cousin Henry the IV.

Rev. Thomas Peyton (Church of England) is the first Peyton that I know of in Ireland. My direct family line is in CAPS. John Peyton Sullivan (my G.grandfather, born is Dublin –1823, moved to Wells Somerset, married into the Coles family and went to Canada 1864-65, them moved to Michigan about 1868. If this is some help you may contact me. sullivanmc@home.com

I have a pedigree of the Peyton family of Leitrim Co. from Burke's 1912 Edition of the Irish Landed Genry. I noticed that there was mention of a Henry whom was the son of John Peyton, High Sheriff of Leitrim who married a daughter of James Reynolds. Is this your line? I descend from this Henry's brother Tobias Peyton. Would love to exchange information. I'm sure it's the same line even if I have the wrong Henry.
