Salley in Orangeburg,S.C.

Has anyone ever heard of the name Beulah Salley
of Orangeburg, South Carolina? Reason: she was
related to Capt.Robert Smalls, an African
American during the Civil War. Need to get
in touch with the entire people who are
connected...I am a relative.

Unfortunately, I do not know of a Beulah Salley and cannot find her name in either of my Salley family books. With a few more partculars I might have better luck. Best, George Salley

Salleys of South Carolina

Reverend Salley:

Hello. I was wondering if in those two books you mentioned, there would be any information about the Salleys of Colleton County, particularly, but not limited to the African-American and/or Native American families?

My maternal grandmother's maiden name is Salley. Her parents are Samson Salley and Lila Rivers. Samson Salley's parents are Sam Salley and Mary, whose maiden name I do not know. Family lore has it that Sam Salley's last name was, prior to the Salley name, a more traditional Native American name.

Any information/leads you can offer, will be much appreciated. Help please. Thank you.

I know that I am related to the Salleys of Orangeburg, but I have yet to uncover the exact connection. Through family lore, I have been able to establish that there is some connection. My maternal grandmother is a Salley from Colleton County. I have information about her parents and grandparents as well. Unfortunately, I do not have any information specifically about Beulah Salley

Please do let me know if any of this information can be of help.

Not sure how large Orangeburg, but I guess in some ways I just imagine that the name Buelah Salley would have in some ways been recognized and one reason is the fact that she was/is a descendent of that great African American Robert Smalls, known sometimes as the Gullah Statesman. The Smalls often have reunions every year; and it is here that I am trying to send out a wake up call to someone related to that family. I do appreciate what your information to me.

Beulah Salley/Robert Smalls

Indeed! I do know who Robert Smalls is. Colleton County is not part of Orangeburg County. Colleton County, along with Charleston and Beufort Counties, make up South Carolina's "low country." Therefore, there is a large percentage of people in Colleton, through migration patterns, of Gullah origin.

Sorry I wan't able to assist with information regarding Beulah Salley, but it seems you may be interested in contacting the Sea Island Coalition. Marquetta Goodwine is the founder and director. You will be able to find them on the web under the Sea Island Coalition, AKAN, or just by keying in Gullah or Geechee.

It is rumored that my family is related somehow to Robert Smalls too, but not on my Salley line. I have not yet been able to document it, so I'm not sure if it is true.

At any rate, I wish you great success in your continued search. I will certainly keep my ears and eyes open to any information about 'Beulah Salley.'

Thank you for your reply!

African-American and Native American Salleys

The Rev. George B. Salley, Jr. (Retired)  (View posts) Posted: 23 Jun 2000 1:35PM GMT
Ms. Stokes - I know virtually nothing about African-American or Native American Salleys, or about any in Colleton County, SC. I did know an African-American Salley in Orangeburg, SC (my home town), with the same name as I have. He was a blacksmith. You, of course, know about the excellent basketball player, John Salley, who played for Georgia Tech and now for a pro team. My brother is an avid sports fan, and always referred to him as Cousin John. My wife works with an African-American lady with the name Salley, and they (and this lady's children) call each other "cousin." I have a history of my mother's family which lists a noted African-American professor with the same surname (Council). The author of this book (published in 1940) seemed very pleased that this man (with that surname) reached such a rank, one of the few who has. Sorry I could not be more helpful. Best, George Salley

Reverend Salley:

Thank you so much for the information. Well, I'll hold onto it, perhaps one day the information will serve as vital information as I know that my Colleton County 'Salleys' are related to the Orangeburg 'Salleys'. I've yet to find out how.

As per your mention of John Salley, the basketball player--he is my cousin. I've actually never met him, but my grandfather Samson Salley (who I mentioned in my last e-mail to you) had a brother named Fletcher Salley. One of Fletcher's children was Quillie Salley. One of Samson's children is my maternal grandmother, Jaruth (Salley) Jenkins. Quillie later had John Salley. My grandmother later had my mother, Cynthia. So, my mother and John are second cousins. That would make John and I third cousins, I guess.

Anyway Reverend, thanks again for your help.

God bless you.
