means nothing to me at the moment, don t know the wife s family name, might be KALB,NALB,KOLB? from Germany, that s suspect; in the WVA,Wheeling census 1920, her dau says her mother [living with her and dau husband,ch]from Austria.
grandma, who doesn t speak english,write,read same says she s from Germany.who s right? don t know. mother [mine]always insisted the SCHMIDTS were from Austria.

I wish it were that simple for me...sadly we are not sure where Theodore's family came from in Germany on one census record he lists Hesse but on another something else was listed. I have the ship, name, manifest and his naturalization papers, I have the family from when they came to the US but I want backwards now...lol I want to know who his Schmidt family was before he came to the US. Thanks for all the tips!

I am also researching my German family. I did a google search on the last name and got lucky. I found a person in Germany who was a distant relative and was also researching the family.But I digress. There are some things that will help your research. Do you know where in Germany your Schmidt family came from? Because, don't forget, until 1989 Germany was divided into East and West Germany and the records were divided accordingly.One site I recently discovered is: http://home.bawue.de/~hanacek/info/edatbase.htm#�bersicht
Your probably better off researching the name of the wife in England. I have a world ancestry membership which I pay for. (This is NOT an advertisement!) and it helps. That's all I can think of for now.

I have posted in the past...and I am reposting a little updated information now....
I need to find out who a Frederic Schmidt was married to....not sure when he was born but he is from Germany, his son Theodore Schmidt b. 1838 Germany went to England and Aug. 11,1862 married Jane Ann Hart...after a few of their children were born they came to the US...now according to Theodore's marriage record his father was a Frederic Schmidt who was a farmer...no mother's name was given...could someone please help me to locate Theodore's mother's name and how I can research the german linage? I would be greatful for any help at all.

Theodore Schmidt {Smith}

Looking for information on Theodore Schmidt b. 1838 in Germany, Father's name was possibly Frederick. Theodore went into England and was found there on the 1861 census, he was a furnaceman, he married Jane Ann Hart there about 1862, three of their children were born there and in 1868 they came to the US on board the SS Minnesota. They settled for a time in Frostberg Maryland and then came into Ohio. Theodore has been a very difficult person to research and I would really love to find out who his parents were and his family in Germany. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a Julius Schmidt, born in Germany, July 8, 1868, and later married to Elizabeth Evers, born 1872. Their daughter, Bertha Agnes Schmidt, born April 14, 1904, in Verona Missouri, was my grandmother.

Any idea if this is the same Julius Schmidt? Do you know of other children they may have had? Do you have more detail about Julius and/or Elizabeth?

I have a Herman H. Schmidt born 1829 in Weida Grand Duchee of Weimer, Germany..died 1917 in Fayette Co., Illinois. He married Augusta Kuhlig (born 1854 Milwaukee,Wisconsin) They were at one time in Waukesha County, Wisconsin then later settled in Fayette County, Illinois. They had 11 children, two of which were born in Wisconsin. (Rudolph,Edward,Amelia,Anna,Max,Harmon,Herman,William,Frank,Louisa)

I have been unable to find relatives of Herman. Does this family look familiar?

i believe the hulda schmidt referenced was my great grandmother, she lived in manawa and then clintonville wisconsin for many years. she was first married to albert fenske and had a daughter mildred fenske b. 1907 who is my grandmother and married ben hein, who had a daughter berdaine hein b. 1930, my mother. hulda divorced and remarried, last name mcturk, and had two sons, harold mcturk b. 1913 who married claudia ? and art b. 1914 who also married ?. harold had no children and art had i think 3, however i cannot remember their names. harold and art both lived in colorado, and my mother berdaine hein married david emley b. 1933 and had a son, michael (me) b. 1953 and a daughter patricia b. 1957 who married roger pozorski b. 1957-8 and had four children, melanie, elizabeth, katie and anthony, and live in west bend wisconsin

I am not sure if I am related, but my great great grandfather was William Joseph Schmidt that was married to Florence Greeley. It is possible that this may be your grandfather. Not sure. If I can be of any help, let me know.

My grandfather came from Pomerania, but I don't know where. His parents escaped to Hamburg during the evacuation but were killed. All I know about him is that his name was Martin Schmidt (which may indicate Lutheran) and that he was born in the late 1890's. Can anyone coming across his name please post? Cheers.

Unless Isidore is an off-shoot relative to my line, I don't think there's a match here (Schmidt being as popular a surname as it was). My great-grandfather, Hermann, was born in 1888 to a Ferdinand and Bertha, and came to the US in 1913. Siblings that I know he had were Wanda, Reinhold, and Oskar (there were at least four others, likely more if family stories are to be believed).

It is possible that Isidore and Ferdinand were siblings, making your Walter a cousin to my great-grandfather, Hermann, but I'd need more info.

Hello SilverLady, and thank-you for your input. At the very least, Walter Eugene, was a very good family friend to my grandmother & g-grandmother.
The family info I have on Walter is that he came to this country in 1905 at 14yrs of age, on the SS Blucher, out of Hamburg. Ida was his mother. He had 2 sisters: Elsa (Hess) & Margarete. I believe his father was Julian. Elsa's husband was Isadore Hess.
Please write back & let me know if this is the same family.

I am part of a Schmidt family out of Lodz as well, and your dates line up with mine, to an extent (I know my great-great-grandfather came from a big family, but I don't know the names of all his siblings). Could you give me the names of Walter's parents and any other sibs he might of had ?

An option to search for SSD #s is to look up the LDS (Church of Latter Day Saints). Just type in LDS in a Google search box and go down to one that says "Family Search". Then just type in your info (the less the better) and hit search. Census info will crop up, international info, and SSD info too (all 50 States and territories).
