SHUARTS of North America

my name is Tom Murren, I am a direct SHUART descendant (my mother was a SHUART) and I'm on a mission. It is my belief that most people with the surnames SHUART/SHURT/SHURTE/SIOERT/SJOERT are descendants of SIOERT OLPHERTSEN (b.c. 1640). As of today, my database contains over 900 people with these surnames, spread over the USA and CANADA....and while I have most tied to SIOERT OLPHERTSEN, I am still encountering challenges on a few major, unlinked branches.

I am seeking information which may show a link, or verify the "lack thereof" as SIOERT OLPHERTSEN's descendancy for:

Ancestry/Progeny of HENRY SHUART (b.c. 1768 in NY, USA), whose spouse was RACHEL DEGRAW. (one of the FATHER's of the CANADIAN BRANCH)

Ancestry/Progeny of JOHN WARNER SHUART (b.c. 1807 in NY,USA), whose spouse was Laura M. Townsend.

Ancestry/Progeny of HENRY L. SHUART (b.c. 1811, in NY, USA), whose spouse was Angelina Loftin.

Ancestry/Progeny of JOHN SHUART (whose son Isaac J. was born 1811)....John's spouse was Leah Post.

Ancestry/Progeny of EDWARD SHUART (no known birthdate)...whose wife was EMMA ? (b. 8/1872)...with two children GRACE (b. 7/1898) and James (b. 5/1900)

Ancestry/Progeny of WILLIAM SHUART (b.c. 1790), whose spouse was CORNELIA (b.c. 1800)

Ancestry/Progeny of WILLIAM SHUART (b. unknown) whose spouse was JEMIMA E. VAN HOUTEN (b. 10/1798)

Ancestry/Progeny of JOHN SHUART (b.c. 1795 in SC, USA), whose spouse was AMEY.

Appreciate ANY feedback.

Thank you.

Hello, my name is TOM MURREN, and I too am a SHUART descendant....my family also hails from BERGEN COUNTY, NJ & ROCKLAND/ORANGE CO's NY areas.....I personally grew up in Pompton Lakes, NJ.

My study to date is "trying" to tie the various SHUARTS OF NORTH AMERICA together....and to date, I have over 900 relatives with the Sjoert/Shuart/Shurt/Shurte surnames in my study.....basically in two distinct branches (yet untied)...and a few other stragglers (still yet untied to the 2 main branches). It is my belief, we are ALL tied together.

I noticed your post on this thread, and I noticed I don't have any details on your immediate family in my genealogical database. Would you be willing to exchange information?

My email is buzzcut_bear@yahoo.com

Thanks for your consideration.

Sincerely,
TOM MURREN
Quitman, GA

Hello....My name is TOM MURREN (aka BUZZCUTBEAR on ROOTSWEB).....I too, am a SHUART decendant, and you are my 6th cousin, twice removed.

My genealogical study traces your family down to you and your sister, but I have alot of missing details on your immediate family....would you care to share details with me? I have an extensive study on the SIOERT/SHURTE/SHUART clan from the NY/NJ area.

Any SHUART information would be MUCH appreciated.

Sincerely,

TOM MURREN
buzzcut_bear@yahoo.com

Hello - not sure if you are still out there but I stumbled across this so thought I would reply.
I am related to the Bergen, NJ Shuarts. My father is Garrett E Shuart (1939), son of Garret G Shuart (1911). Dad was the only boy - he had 5 sisters. My grandfathers brother Everett Shuart (1906) lived in Mahwah, NJ. Uncle Everett had 2 children, Franklin and Adi. Not sure about Adi's children but Franklin had 2 children (who also lived and grew up in Mahwah) Darlene and Frank. Franklin and Frank still live in the Mahwah area and Darlene now lives in South Carolina. Frank has 2 boys - yeah, someone to carry on the Shuart name!
My father Garrett has 3 daughters and we all live in the Elmira, NY area. I kept my last name when I was married so my daughters name is Emily Shuart-Koellner. The idea was to carry on the name - but did not have any sons... I have an old family tree somewhere that my Aunt Marion Shuart (wife of Everett Shuart) gave to me years ago. I recognize the name Abram. I also remember the name Adolphis.
Seems there are more and more Shuarts popping up all the time!
We spent alot of time in the Mahwah, NJ area growing up.

I would have to send it by mail since that is how I got it and don't have it in my computer. I am a descendant of the Shuarts from Dixboro MI. The paperwork starts with Sjourt Olphertsen from the Netherlands in 1635. Let me know your address if you are still interested and how you are related.
Kim
email address: lewiskh@comcast.net

I am interested in any information you have on Shuarts in Michigan. I was initially researching my grandfather's family and discovered a marriage between Ethel V. (don't know her maiden name) b. 1888 in Pennsylvania and a Frank Shuart b. 1888 in Pennsylvania, but who was listed as Frank Thrush on the 1910 & 1920 Census for Wise Township, Isabella County, Michigan. Then in the 1930 Census for Gilmore Township, Isabella County, Michigan, Ethel V. is listed as being married to Benjamin Franklin Thrush b. Aug. 17, 1882 in Illinois.
Ethel V. & Frank Shuart had Sidney A. Shuart b. 1907, Lester R. Shuart b. 1911, Vernon E. b. 1913, and Harold F. b. 1914.
Ethel V. & Benjamin Franklin Thrush had Alfred W. Thrush b. Sept. 20, 1920, d. June 24, 1950, Roy W. Thrush b. 1924, and Leon P. Thrush b. 1927. Any information that you think might be helpful would be greatly appreciated. I have a complete history of the Shuart line going back to 1663. If you are interested please email me back. I also have a picture of Laura Townsend Shuart. Thanks
Wow. Merry Christmas to us all.

Hello Christine, I am Sue. Yes, we are indeed related!

Going back to Mable -

She had a brother, Edward Benjamin Bennett. The two of them were the only surviving children of Isaac Bennett with his second wife Mary Kelly Bennett ( who I believe is buried with the Shuarts in Airmont Cemetery?)

Edward married Anna Utter, and they had 12 children. My grandfather, Ronald Bennett, is the only one still living. He was born in 1918 (#11)

So My Grandfather and yours, (Otis) and your Uncle Carl would all be first cousins.

My Dad and My Aunt Joan both still rave about Aunt Mable. I have a couple of pictures of her, and Aunt Joan still has a letter written by Aunt Mable talking about some of the family history.

I can't wait to let my Dad and Grandfather know about this!

Dear fellow Shuarts:

Your post is from February 18 oddly enough, my father's birthday. I was amazed to see your post...I believe we may be related, no?...

From your 2/18 post, allow me to elaborate...

From Abram and Mable Shuart...

Miriam (now long deceased) was my great aunt...married Ernie Schmidlin (also deceased). No children.

Carl is my great uncle. Still alive.
Never married; No children.

Otis is my grandfather. Still alive. Married Ruth Wheeler in 1946. Ruth Wheeler is my grandmother. Ruth is alive as well, but in failing health, not expected to live past Christmas this year.

Otis and Ruth had two children: Ruth (jr.) and Ross. Ross is my father. Ross married Patricia. Ross and Patricia had two children - Christine (yours truly) and Carolyn. Carolyn married Brian in 2004. I will be married to Peter in June. No children for either of us yet.

Ruth (jr.) married Anthony in the early 1980's. They had two children - Sarah and Alexander. Unfortunately, my Aunt Ruth succumbed to breast cancer in 1989 (perhaps '88?). My Uncle Tony remarried a few years later.

In our vein, I'm afraid the Shuart name end with my sister Carolyn and myself, as we adopt our married names.

We are in various parts of the country at this point. Please reply if you wish more information.

I am researching the Shuart side of my family. John Warner Shuart (1807 - 1868) ended up in Superior Township in Washtenaw County, MI. He married Laura Townsend and they had 9 children - Charles, Martha, George, Caroline, Ransom, Freeman, Ursula, Edmund, and Worthy. Caroline married Charles McCormick and moved to Bedford Township, Calhoun County to raise her family. I have a photo taken in 1920, labled the Crandall-Shuart Reunion. I can identify many of the Crandalls and Worthy Shuart. I would like to hear from others that may be able to help identify the rest.
Thanks!

Hi Judi,
Marion and I are cousins thru marriage. I noticed your posting and thought that since Marion hasn't answered I might. Hiram Caleb Shuart is the son of Joseph Shuart and Evalina (many other spelling here) Robbins, Joseph is the son of Hiram Shuart and Catherine A Skermer ?? (not sure could be Skinner, etc.), We are currently scouring New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania records to find some clues as to Hiram's parents. We have stong suspicions of a New York connection but have as of yet been unable to confirm. We haven't had much success thus far, but we are gathering steam. Hope this helps.

Scott

Marian - Can you tell me from which line Hiram descended? I've been going through what I have on the Shuarts from Sjoert Olferstszen -> Olfert Sjoerts and I can't find a Hiram at all.

However, my records are not any where near being complete.

Judi

Hi...I can tell you that my Shuart relatives were from North Jersey. However, in my line Mary was not one of them. In fact I have not at this time come across the name. If I do I'll let you know. Good Luck, Peter
