I am Valerie Strait, daughter of Lynn Strait. My father was the son of Milton and Dollie. I believe that Orville was my fathers cousin? I know they were related. I remember visiting him as a kid. I am sorry this is years after you have been looking. I have just started to research my Dad's family. We are much more connected to my Moms side. My Dad died back when I was 21, 21 years ago.

This group is found in Chester Co., S.C. and Winston County, MS. I am a little confused. I am showing Christopher's father as Leonard Strait of South Carolina. I have alot information about Jed and the Hataway Line (Mayflower descendants), but know very little about the Strait family. Can anyone help? Will share what I know to be true with others.
Nurse

Re: LOOKING FOR INFO. ON RELATIVES

Becky,
Did you ever get any info from Steve (my brother)? Not sure if he is ever on the net anymore. I've finally had time again to pick up the research, so thought I'd put my 2 cents in.

Anyway, for the rest of you that may be looking for Strait information, we are from Edgar's line. Edgar had 6 children: Emma Jane, Clifford, Henry George, Peter D., Milton, and Wade. This Peter is my g-grandfather, nephew of the other Peter. Peter was married to Nellie Gray (Glenn's mother) and to Georgia Dean. Peter D. had 9 children: Leon Waide, Elwood, Leo Estel, Lloyd, Ralph Russell, Ardith Bell, Charles Richard, Glenn Gray (not Peter's biological son)and Hattie. Charles married Pansy Bell Walker and had four children (one is my mother).
I have dates for some of these people. I've been slowly trying to fill in the missing information.

Like everyone else, I have only traced back to Richard Strait/Buckmaster and Lucinda Proctor. My theory has been that Richard was a Mormom (there was a General/Corporal Buckmaster with LDS around then) and married both women. The mormons were instructed to marry the Indians to purify the Indian (Native Amer.) race, so it would make sense. I, too, have heard all the Indian stories through the family, and can see it in the pictures of Edgar and all the relatives.

Anyway, I've complained my whole life that I didn't have any cousins, but I see here there are a whole slew of them. I would love to correspond with any of you and trade info.
BTW, did the Strait reunion ever happen? I would love to get up to Uncle Glenn and Aunt Lorena's farm again. It's a perfect excuse to go visit back home. Email me at tennant_amy@hotmail.com

Amy

Strait Wood Cem. , WG043, RI., New unlisted burial, John Strait?

The person who inventoried this and other RI. cemeteries in 1994 recently told me by email that he noted a fieldstone in the cemetery noted sbove, as having a date marked 1792, and that the initials that were on the stone were unreadable. I have never checked against RI. vital records for a verificatrion of the dates that are commonly ascribed to John Strait, presumably the father of the Revolutionary War Veteran David Strait who is buried there. John Strait is said to have lived 1707-1792 according to many accounts. The cemetery is small and in bad repir at this time, also it exists without a sign. Is there any information from primary records on this John Strait, perhaps from NEHGS records? If this is the marker for that John, there are three generations leading to David F. Spencer, the son of Amos Spencer and his 3rd wife Ruth Strait Sweet Spencer. Ruth is also buried in this Cem. David Strait`s war records is availble for those who can access Heritage Plus. He was more that 80 years old when he appeared before Judge Tillinghast with his affidavit concerning his military service, which was approved. That affadavit and someinformation about his life, plus his service number is all available. The fellow who took inventory of the cemetery and others has a book about the same, showing much detail and care. Please let me know if you have additional information about John Strait. Thanks,

Neal Strait, now deceased, is my uncle. He was born on May 3, 1895 and was one of 7 children of William and Charlotte Strait. I don't have the date of his death, but he was in his 70s. He worked for the railroad until the depression then moved back to the home of his birth in Sylvan Twnshp for a few years. He farmed until the start of WWII and then moved to Monroe, MI where he worked for the railroad until his death. He and Daisy had three children, two boys and a girl, the oldest boy died in a hunting accident when he was 14. That is about what I remember off the top of my head. I haven't had contact with them since before WWII. If you might have something spacific that you would like to know, I would like to hear from you. Very truly yours, Burton E. Strait.

I descend from this same line of STRAIT's. My great grandmother was Lillian Heffner Strait, married to Albert Serenious STRAIT. They lived in Whitehall for as long as I could remember.

As for the George STRAIT (entertainer) connection, I haven't found it yet. It seems that his line of STRAIT's came out of KY and upon migration to California some settled in Alabama or Arkansas and Texas. That is where his family stayed (Dallas, Texas area). It appears from my research that they came from West Virginia or Virginia. Our Straits came out of Morris Co., New Jersey. That is not to say though that some of those Strait's didn't go down into VA/WV to settle.

Michelle Kennedy Byrd

Aug 1841 in Adams Co., IN but I do not have anything further on him. Gabriel would have been my 3rd cousin. I have a possible brother for him as being William D. STRAIT b. 1846 and m. to Sarah REUFENPERGER but nothing further on him nor are either confirmed as being correct as sons of Peter and Sophia Jane Swasey STRAIT.

I do have a lot of confirmed and unconfirmed Strait information though.

Michelle Kennedy Byrd

At Michnock Pond in West Greenwich, Rhode Island is the Strait-Wood burial Ground, I believe it is WG043. This mostly ruined cemetery has the grave of David Strait, Revolutionary War Veteran as described by the Cemetery Book that reviews Rhode Island Cemeteries in 1995, when the cemetery still had standing graves before the vandalism. No more that one or two stones were standing in 2004. Records from the Rev. War Pension Act. of 1831 list: David Strait, Number S21,512, his name spelled ~strait~ Rhode Island, Kent County., living in __ Greenwich, RI., 4th September, 1832, pension 20.00 dollars semiannual, plus the recording information. I despair over the dishonor of his ruined and neglected burial site.

Diana or Becky might have more on Jasper, but here's what I have:

He was born 15 Sep 1843 in Ohio. He married Rachel Ann Woolf (or Wolfe) in Oceana Co., MI, in 1870. He died on 5 May 1920 in Golden, Oceana Co., MI. Jasper and Rachel had 5 children (that I know of): William (born abt 1871), Ida (born abt 1873), Edith M (born about 1877), George E (born abt 1879), and Joseph N (born abt 1887).

I also have that George married Jessie F (born abt 1884) and they had 2 children, Marion J (born abt 1914) and Rachel A (born abt 1919).

And that Joseph maried Mable Smith and they had a daughter, Dorthea. Joseph also married Ruby P Lowe (born abt 1887). They had 3 children: Joseph (born abt 1921), Vonia J (born abt 1924), and Jack L (born abt 1927).

That's everything I have about Jasper and his decendants. I would love any info you can give me on William.

Evonne
