Looking for SURRY family of Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk between about 1750 and 1900. One branch of the family was in the Hastings area of Sussex during the period 1841-1892. The family had strong connections with the preventive services. However, at this stage any Surrys of those areas are my prime interest.

I've been working on my SURRY family (various Robert Surrys from 1785 - 1903 of Ess, Ssx, Sfk, Dev) for about 10 years. I've looked into the origins 3 or 4 times and have consistently come up with the following (subject to more information):
Surry: of habitation origin; i.e. those family names which are derived from either the location of the place of residence of the initial bearer or from the name of the town or village from whence he hailed. In this case, the name "SURRY" or "Surrey" denotes "the man from Surrey" (recorded in Suthridge in 722 A.D.), the name of a county located in the south of the River Thames. One of the earliest written references to the surname SURRY (Surrey) is a record of one John de Surreye who appears (on the Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire) in 1274.

If you find any Robert, Samuel, Thomas, Frederic Surrys, please let me know.

I am from the county of Surrey, born at Epsom, and my name is Vincent. I notice you have the name Vincent listed, could you tell me the connection you have between the two names, do you have a Vincent in your background and have you done any research into that name?

Hi Brian

I think we exchanged a few emails a couple of years back, but unfortunately I have changed PCs and lost all my old emails in the meantime! However, I also have SURRY ancestors, and since we were last in touch I've found out more about my 3 x great grandfather, John SURRY. He was born in Wimbish, Essex in about 1894 (according to his Army record), or about 1896 (according to the 1841 census). He joined the Royal Engineers in Cambridge in 1813, and was stationed in various locations (Woolwich, France, The Netherlands, New Orleans, Washingston, Barbados) until he was discharged due to ill health in 1832. He married a French woman called Glosine (also went by the name Johanna) and had at least six children (Mary, John, Francis, Johanna, James & Johanna). After John left the Army, the family lived in the Romney Marsh area of Kent.

I have not yet established who John's parents were, but if you have any information which you think could help I'd love to hear from you.

Many thanks

kim

I have a great great great grandmother Rebecca Surry from Great Chesterford, Essex - between Saffron Walden and Cambridge.

I don't have solid proof of the links but this is what I've pieced together.

One of my great great grandmothers was Jane Danns b 1821 in Great Chesterford. I believe her father was Anthony Danns (b 1786 Great Chesterford) and her mother Rebecca Surry (b 1791 Great Chesterford) - they married at Great Chesterford in 1815. Rebecca had I believe three siblings:

- John Surry b 1795 who married Ann Hedges in Cambridge in 1816;
- Mary Surry b 1789 Great Chesterford
- Samuel Surry b 1782 Great Chesterford who married a Sarah [unknown]

Samuel Surry had three children:

- Martin Surry b 1805; he was a Lime Burner and so was his son Samuel Surry b 1841 who married Louisa Perrin in 1868 - no children. I don't know his first wife's name, but Martin appeared to have married a second time to an Ann Sussex, b 1833 Swavesey Cambridgeshire. No other children that I can find.
- Elizabeth Surry b 1807 Great Chesterford
- Amy Surry b 1810 Great Chesterford

I think the parents of Rebecca, John, Mary and Samuel were Robert and Ann (maiden name unknown) Surry.

My grandmother, who took great interest in Great Chesterford issues, as she often visited as a child and her ashes are buried there, told me that the Surry's "died in decline". They certainly did as far as Great Chesterford was concerned if Anthony Surry moved away to Cambridge (can't trace any decsendants from him either).

Would welcome any further information. I do need to stress the health warning on this - especially on anything pre-1800.

Don't think I can help. My SURRYs (Robert) appear in Tollesbury in 1783 marrying an Elizabeth Hoy, and (2) in 1785 to Rebecca Lemon, also in Tollesbury. I have not been able to confirm this Robert's birthdate or place (other than a strong suspicion that he may have been born in Tolleshunt Major in 1757, son of Robert and Judith).
Recently, there is a suspicion about a genetic 'health' concern that has popped up; however, this appears to be a single branch issue.

I have a rebecca surry who married an anthony DANNS in 1815 and he was in 1841 census as living in essex.

I am trying to put together some info for you of that branch of my (possible - not sure yet) family.

My Surry's seemed to have popped up in Tollesbury in about 1783. (a Robert Surry married (1) Elizabeth Hoy, (2) Rebecca Lemon).
I have not been able to establish where this Robert Surry sprang from.

No sign of a Rebecca, but without further information, I have no idea.

My Danns were originally from Great Paxton, Huntingdonshire. Edward Danns (father of Anthony Danns who married Rebecca Surry) referred to property in Great Paxton in his will. Edward married a Mary Parker in Great Chesterford in Essex in January 1780, and Edward died in the same village in 1810. I now assume that Edward was born in Great Paxton, but will be doing more digging on this - any advice would be most welcome!

My family history site (usually updated within a month of the arrival of new, solid info) can be seen at http://juliancbaker.110mb.com/
