Does anyone have any information on William "Bill" Vance who lived in Van Buren County TN from about 1845 until he died in the 1870's? He married first wife, Martha Orear, in 1843 in Chatham, Georgia and then married again to Margaret White in Van Buren County in 1851. His children are Mary, David, Jesse, John, Mahala, and Bersheeba. I have been told that Margaret White was a full-blood Cherokee Indian. Any help would be appreciated :)

Is there anyone out there tracing the sam Vance family as I am?????. I am looking for info on Adam Vance (my Great Great Grandfather) who had a son William (Wesley) H. born 1838 who was married to 1st wife Catherine Hess. Had about 10 children. Among them were Minnie Cora, my Great Grandmother, Mollie, Mattie, Columbus, Birdie, Dora, Newton, Lonzo and more. These Vances were from Monroe County WVA probably Second Creek.

I would be most interested in who your William Vance's father was that lived in Fayette Co, PA. Do you know the township and when they first arrived? My g-g-g-grandfather William Vance (Sr) lived in Fayette County in 1800, possibly earlier. There was another William Vance and his brother Ezekiel Vance living in Menallen Twp prior to 1800. A third William Vance may have been the son of Samuel Vance in Tyrone Twp, also about 1800.

I am a descendant of William K. Vance. The following info is not based on primary sources. it is based on Muriel Spoden's genealogy of the Netherland family. She states that William K Vance (1780-1852) was a lieutenant in the Mexican War and was sheriff of Sullivan County. TN. However, she makes no mention of Hugh Vance but states
that Wm K was the son (not grandson) of Dr. Patrick Vance, Rev. War physician who was the "scalping doctor." she says that Wm. K was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia and died in Green Co., Tenn.

One thing that may help a bit: a DNA test. It only applies if you are a male Vance, but if you are or know one, a test will show which branch of the family your forebears come from. See http://www.vancegenealogy.com/index.php

Adalade Teague Vance - 1820

This is the name of my grgrgrandma whom, according to my direct line DNA, was born in West Africa, Sierra Leone.
Adalade was enslaved by who, I think was a DR EF Teague. He had 6 slaves in 1850..2 women over 30 and 1 adult male. There were children born, but names are a total blank. I am looking for any information about the slaveholders, such as selling, loaning out, gifting of their slaves to a family member or other slave holders. I first found Adalade in Shaw's Creek, which is now Johnston SC, Edgefield. Her children Lucy, my grgrandma bn abt 1852, Francis, Harriet, James and Beckie were all charted born in this community. The 1st 3 were born into slavery the other's after slavery supposedly ended. I've tried looking through Teague inventory records and cannot seem to narrow down any information as to when his slaves were purchased or from who. ALL of Adalades children carried the SURNAME Vance until some remarried. Lucy VANCE, EVEN THOUGHT SHE STATED ON THE CENSUS HER HUSBAND WAS Anthony Vance never stopped using the Vance surname, and since I knew my grandmothers maiden, Lucy's baby girl Adell, I was able to trace them to Mississippi. On the 1930 Census Lucy Vance finally gave the place of birth of South Carolina. Before it was always Mississippi. In my mind she may have been running from something. In 1870 she was in Shaw's Creek, SC. No one in my immediate family says they knew anything about South Carolina family. So I am asking anyone if they can review their own familt history and find out if there are any records about slaves owned, born or named.

I am also looking for the same information. William Vance and Rebecca Elswick were my pappaw Thurmans parents.I know Papaw Thurmans pappaw was Thomas Vance and his mammaw was Arminta Akers.He never told us that until before he died. He said he was ashamed, but didn't say much more.

I am looking for anyone who has photos or knowledge of Yellow Mountain Cemetery and/or Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery in Avery County, NC. I found transcriptions of the cementeries here http://files.usgwarchives.org/nc/avery/cemeteries/yellow01.t... and http://files.usgwarchives.org/nc/avery/cemeteries/pisgah01.t.... What I'm unclear about is whether the headstones mention the spouses and parents of the individual or is that an addition of the transcriper. I sent to the Saint Louis Public Library in Missouri for copies of records for my great great grandfather's brother, Elijah Vance, who was born in Pendleton County, VA/WV and moved to Missouri ca 1858-60.

I received the records of Elijah M. Vance,who died May 25, 1912, survived by his wife Mary C. Vance, and children E.S. or B, M.C. and H.M. Vance and Mrs. Alice Robinson This Mr. Vance was a native of Butler Co, Ohio and I don't think he is related. Iam looking for the parents of Clarissa Vance who was b abt 1797 and m Eleazer Scott abt 1818/19 and they lived in Greensboro Vt. She d at age 26 in 1823. They were my ggg gradparents. I have looked into the family of David & Mary Scott Of Greensboro Vt and according to their will they didn't have a child by that name. There was a James and Hannah Scott Family of Glover Vt but don't find much on their family. Russell Frank Vance Sr. 70, Rocky Mount, formerly of Muscatine, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at his home.

Service at Nichols Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Crematory, 114 W. Fourth St., Muscatine. The Rev. John Gaulke will officiate. Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Vance was born Aug. 11, 1933, in Tracy, Iowa, the son of Orville and Eva Chilcote Vance.

He was a member of the Rocky Mount Chapel Assembly of God.

Survivors include two sons, Russell Vance Jr. of Muscatine and Robert Vance and wife Patty of Mediapolis; three daughters, Eva Stephens, Judy Schley and Lisa Vance, all of Muscatine; a brother, Jack Vance of Bondurant; eight grandchildren, Becky Esparza and husband Richard, Amanda Stephens, Gregory Stephens, Bradley Vance, Ellie Vance, Cassandra Vance, Britney Vance and Christopher Schley; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Veda P. Vance and Charlene L. James; a daughter, Veda C. Vance in 2002; and two brothers, Donald and Vernon Vance.

I did not attend that gathering. I however might have meet you on a trip to Ochois Rio, Jamaica ? I can only trace my line back as far as Varnah, Vaniah which ever is correct Vance. Could you assist me in the information about
this line of Vance. I would appericate it very much. By the way, I have the last male child out of Byron Vance / Jessie
Lewis Vance line. His name is Carter Allen Vance. All my cousins had girls or are past child bearing ages. Hope to hear from you soon . Thanks David

Hi David, I think we know you already. We met at the Vance Family Association in Winchester in 2001??? Did you and Susan go and take pictures of the inside of Patrick Vance Home in Falling Springs, which was Valley Quary? Anyway, we have corresponded before. You sent us a Christmas Card with a picture of you and your lovely family,(Dec 15,2001) also shared your pictures of Jeff and his dogs and a couple of other pictures. Did I ever send you the Gencon file on the Vances. We have a file back to 1080 I believe it is, but saying it is all true, we can not as we have not personally done all the research and a lot of it lacks a reference where it came from. About Benard, I meant to say the "V" could look like a "B" because of the way they looped the their capitals back then. I found your pictures when I went to look and see if I had a death certificate in the file. Have not found one yet. We are still using "The Family Tree Maker V.11. If Jefferson Davis father is Vaniah / What can you tell me about him ? How far back can you trace this line of Vance ?
I never heard my grandfather talk much about Jefferson Davis . I do have an old photograph of him with one or two coon dogs.Byron & Jessie came from the Livermore ,Kentucky area to Hunter, Arkansas. After there kids were raised they
moved to Memphis , Tennessee. My father John Allen Vance the youngest was the last of their children to die in 2005.
A lot of this klan is buried in the Hunter , Ark cemetry.My
grandmother told me we were kin to the Athertons.

Why is the death certificate signed Benard? If we are talking about the same fammily line, it may be that the B looks like a B. I'll look and see if I have a copy of that death certificate. This is my family line as I have it: Vanirah(Vanarah,Vanard, Vaniah)and Nancy Brown had Jefferson Davis Vance 1861 m Stelle Atherton, 1862-1951 (McLeanCoKY);had ByronVance1892, M Jessie R Lewis had John Allen Vance, 1927 M Bonnie Ruth Carter,1928 had David Allen Vance, Thomas B, and TracieLeigh....... Why was Jefferson Davis Vance living with the Athertons? His father and mother passed away by 1867, while the children were still young and his Mothers sister, who was married to an Atherton took the children in.
My grandfather, Millard Fillmore brother to Jefferson Davis also Sally B Atherton, sister to Stella. You may find that you are kin 5 different ways to this group. PV_JV

Do we suppose your Charles is the same one? It seems almost certain, doesn't it?

In that case, if you are a Mr. Vance, as I assume, you can do great favour to any relatives by getting a DNA test done (harmless and painless) which will show which branch of the Vance family you all belong to. See http://www.vancegenealogy.com/index.php.

If money is a problem (as the test is a bit expensive) perhaps the other relatives could chip in. It's the best way to find out where these Vances fit into the big picture and only male Vance DNA will do.

I'd be very grateful for all the details anyone can give me about these Vances, as well.

I'm collating the English, Scottish, Irish, American and other overseas Vances in the hope of finally sorting out the connection between them and my family of Vans of Barnbarroch.
My aim is to collect every (!) recorded Vance family and try to piece together the entire picture, using all the available sources and taking into account the genetic data.

Delighted to help. If you like, I can give you 3 generations, with full details, of the ancestors of your grandmother - and I can put you in touch with your cousin who provided me with the info.

And, since your Vances are in DNA Group 1 (see http://www.vancegenealogy.com/index.php) I can tell you that we are very likely distant cousins and that you, like me, are descended from the distinguished Norman, then Scottish, family of Vans of Barnbarroch, via an ancestors of yours who went to Ireland some time (probably before 1650).

A lot of bad history has been written about this family connection so please do not believe everything you find on the internet! I am very happy to pass on the facts, properly researched.

Hi,
The best way to find out more depends on having a living male Vance relative. Then you have to persuade his to get a (harmless and painless) DNA test. These tests have divided the Vances into 8 main groups. One of these is probably quite closely related to the Scottish family of Vans of Barnbarroch to which I belong. Others don't seem to be so close, but may still have their origins in Scotland or Ireland. One group almost certainly has its origins in Germany, original surname Wantz or Wentz. Courtney Reagan-Jane Vance, 30, of Portland died on Thursday, August 13, 2009.

Courtney was preceded in death by her grandparents William A. & Muriel G. Sharp, and Phyllis & George Mills and great grandparents, Reuben & Nettie Mills, and Charles & Waeta Rinehart.

She is survived by: her husband, Nelson Eugene Vance of Portland; daughter, Abigail Nicole Vance of Portland; parents, William A. Sharp and Judith Mills Sharp of Gallatin; sister, Amanda Mae Sharp of Gallatin; mother-in-law, Pauline Vance of Welch, WV; father-in-law, Alexander (Sue)Vance, Jr. of Portland; aunt, Marilyn E. Sharp of Dalton, Ga.; uncle, Billy (Anna) Mills of Orlando, Fla.; aunt, Glenda (Courtney) Vanderveer and their Tori of Hendersonville; sister-in-law, Teresa (Richard) VanDyke of Welch, WV; sister-in-law, Natasha (Jeff) Bradley of Portland; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 17 at 4 p.m. from the chapel of Alexander Funeral Home with Brother Leon Graves officiating. Jefferson Davis Vance is my great grandfather. His son Byron is my grandfather. John Allen Vance is my father.
I have a lot of questions as to why Jefferson Davis was
living in the Atherton family as a child ? Why is the death certificate signed Benard if Vanirah Vance was his father ?
Do you have futher information prior to Jefferson Davis Vance we could share. Sounds like we are distant cousins.

I do apologise if I've already emailed you about this; I'm beginning to lose track of where I've got to in my list of people to contact, who have members of the Vance family among their genealogical data.

I'd really appreciate any information you have about 'your' or any Vances (a gedcom would be ideal as it saves re-typing) and particularly any ideas, legends, or better still, knowledge, about their origins.

Having all the available information may help in eventually finding some of the earlier generations in Ireland and Scotland, particularly if we can find some male Vances; if we can persuade any male descendants from your line to get a DNA test, we shall at least know which branch of the Vances yours is.

I have found your querry about Jefferson Davis Vance, b in McLean Co KY. son of Benard which is really Vanirah Vance, Jr.(if you are my kin) I have an Uncle, Jefferson Davis Vance, so many times back that is buried in Old Buck Creek Cemetery out on CR1081 out of Nuckols KY. You can find his tomstone picture on on "Find A Grave" website. Phillip R Vance, a descendant of Patrick R Vance, d 1803 TN and Elizabeth Houston. Be glad to share if you are related.
