Re: Searching for New England WEBB Descendants

I am descended from Benjamin Webb, Christopher Webb II's brother. I may have more info for you if you need it. Let me know.

Family Group Sheet
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Husband: Christopher Webb, II #190
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Born: Mar. 28, 1630 in Crediton, Devon, England
Died: May 30, 1694 in Braintree, MA.
Father: Christopher Webb, I #8195
Mother: Humilitie Wheaton #189
At 59 years of age he was elected Representative from Braintree to the Great
and General Court, serving 1689 and 1690. Will dated Apr. 14, 1694, proved
Jun. 29, 1694: To wife Hannah improvement of whole estate for life and all
household goods and personal estate, 2 cows, 2 oxen, my white horse, etc. and
all implements for husbandry, etc. at her disposal. He came to America with
his father when he was young and they settled at Braintree, MA. In 1654 he
married Hannah Scott and he was a representative of his town and was referred
to as "Hon. Christopher Webb". From him is descended the Baltimore branch of
the family. For a period of seventeen years he served as town clerk of
Braintree, MA. He recorded the dates of marriages, births, and deaths of the
citizens of Braintree. He did so in the Old Style, following the precepts set
forth in the Julian Calendar. The original records bearing the handwriting of
Christopher Webb are extant in the town clerk's office in Braintree, MA.

Notes : From Bates’ Braintree town records, p660, “Ensign Christopher Webb,
sometimes the keeper of this book died upon the 30th day of May 1694 aged 64.”
Probate Information : Suff. Prob., 13:220; His will is dated 14 April 1694;
proved 28 June 1694. He gives wife Hannah, “all the profit, improvement and
benefit of my whole estate during her natural life; also all my household
goods and chattels, and all my personal estate, both within doors and without;
together with two cows, two oxen, and my white horse, with all my implements
of husbandry, &c. To my son John Webb and his heirs twenty pounds, to be paid
immediately after my wife’s decease. To my son Peter Webb and his heirs twenty
pounds after my wife’s decease; also the east end of my dwelling house, which
he liveth in, &c. To my son Samuel Webb and his heirs twenty pounds after my
wife’s decease. To my son Benjamin Webb and heirs the same. To my son Joseph
Webb and heirs forty pounds after my wife’s decease. To my dau. Hannah Adams
five pounds after my wife’s decease. To my dau. Mary Adams twenty pounds after
wife’s decease. To my dau. Abigail Webb twenty pounds after wife’s decease. To
my son Christopher Webb’s children, my grandchildren, Christopher Webb, Hannah
Webb, and Sarah Webb, twenty-four pounds to be divided equally among them.
Appoints the three oldest sons, John, Peter, Samuel, Executors. Witnesses,
Hannah Savel, Senr, Hannah Savel, Junr, Samuel Tompson, Sen. Inventory, lands,
meadows, dwelling-house, and outhouses, £240.10; salt march, £30; dwelling
house at Monatiquit (the present township of Braintree) and half and acre of
orchard, £35; sundries, £80.2.6; total, £385.12.6.”
Military Service : In 1675 Indian raids nearby caused the town to establish a
garrison and they appointed Richard Thayer to be in command of it. He turned
out to be quite a scoundrel who attempted to cheat the Town of Braintree of
money by making false allegations concerning his military exploits against
Indians on the town’s behalf. He lists Christopher in his bill to the town,
presented to the town on 1677, which states, “…two pounds, three shillings,
four pence, payed to Cristiner Weab…” There is no current evidence to suggest
that Christopher rendered any actual military service as a soldier.
Occupation(s) : He was listed in his will as a mill-wright; he was also a
surveyor, land speculator, and Selectman of Braintree.

His name is affixed to the Indian Deed of 10 August 1665, as a representative
of the town, wherein in states that they paid £21.10.0 for all the eastward
land within the boundary of the Town of Braintree, defined as bounded in the
seaside in the North-east, by the boundary with Dorchester in the North-west,
by the boundary with Weymouth in the South-east, and by the Dorchester
boundary line in the South-west.

The Towne of Brantry voted on 25 Marc 1673 that Christopher Webb Sr, ‘should
forthwith goe and find out a trackt of land, and by a Sirvaer lay out 6000
acers which was the generall Courts grant unto the Towne of Brantrey and shall
make a returne of it in a plot under the sirvaers hand’, and further, that
‘the Towne dus allow the sayd Web and patners 1500 one thousand five hundred
acers for their paines and charge…’.

He was charged with letting out the common land of the town for harvest,
forage and pasture; he negotiated probate and estate settlements and
coordinated farming rights on common property of the town. He served as
Braintree Town clerk from 18 May 1678.

On 27 October 1679 was among three men chosen by the townsfolk of Braintree,
‘to prosecute their interest in the lands purchased of Josiah Sachem by a
treaty uth Boston Selectmen…’.

He was listed as a Selectman of Braintrey in 1682, and on 4 March 1682 was on
a committee deciding the fate of a dam on the Monotocutt River. A Selectman
was one of a board of officers, generally unpaid, elected annually to manage
various local concerns of a town or township in New England. In this capacity,
his name is subscribed to the document titled, “Remonstrance of the
Inhabitants of Braintry to the Colonial Agents : To our Honored Agents, Joseph
Dudley and John Richards, Esqrs.” In that document, they dispute the claims by
Richard Thayer that they are not loyal, and in quite descriptive language tear
down Thayer, while proclaiming their loyalty to the crown. They beg the crown
to remember their liberties as spelled out on their charter, approved by King
James and Charles I, and for their advocates to return after presenting their
arguments to (the current sovereign).

On 20 May 1689, ‘Christopher Web Sr. & Joseph Crosby were chosen by the
Inhabitants as their representatives for the Towne of Braintrey to meet the
representatives of the rest of the Townes at Boston on 22 of this Instant…’
(this meeting was an emergency session of the Inhabitants of Massachusetts
convened to vote on whether or not to reinstate the defunct former Governor,
and government, et al, elected in 1686, until such time as a decision came
down from the Crown concerning the ultimate settlement of government for the
entire colony). Again on 4 June 1689, chosen to ‘consult with the Counsel
sitting in Boston 5th of this instant June about the emergencies that came
under consideration : ther was chosen Christopher Web Sr. by the voice of the
Assembly meet for their representative.’

Property : The Towne of Brantry voted on 25 Marc 1673 that Christopher Webb
Sr, ‘should forthwith goe and find out a trackt of land, and by a Sirvaer lay
out 6000 acers which was the generall Courts grant unto the Towne of Brantrey
and shall make a returne of it in a plot under the sirvaers hand’, and
further, that ‘the Towne dus allow the sayd Web and patners 1500 one thousand
five hundred acers for their paines and charge…’. What became of this land is
not yet known. He is listed on 24 February 1661-62 as a resident of Billerica,
Massachusetts, thereafter as a resident of Braintree, Suffolk County,
Massachusetts.

Family : Four of Christopher Webb’s children, two sons and two daughters,
engaged in what Vinton called a, “Quadruple Alliance,” with the Joseph Adam’s
family of Braintree, by marrying two of his sons and daughters.
To son John L20 at wife's decease. To son Peter L20 at wife's decease and the
east end of my dwelling house which he liveth in and the land it stands on and
the gravelly or sandy bottom before it down to the fresh meadow. To son Samuel
L20 at wife's decease. To son Benjamin L20 same. To dau. Mary Webb L20 same.
To dau. Abigail Webb L20 same. To son Christopher Webb's children Hannah and
Sarah L24 equally divided at age of 21 and 18 my three eldest sons executors.
Witnesses: Hannah Savil Sr., Hannah Savil Jr., and Samuel Thompson Sr. Probate
give to three sons, John, Peter, and Samuel. Inventory: Lands and meadows in
the mill field and west end of dwelling house, barn and sheep house L200/10/.
A piece of fresh meadow below the sandy bottom and a piece of upland on the
back side of Peter Webb's house L40. Salt marsh at ye farme L30, one dwelling
house and Monaticot and an orchard about 1/2 acre. Lived near Fort Square,
Quincy, north of the brook probably near School and Fort Sts., was in King
Philip's War 1675 (Reg. Vol. 43). He was elected Town Clerk 1673 and in march
of that year was appointed by the town to lay out the 6000 acre grant given by
the General Court to the town of Braintree. He deposed Oct. 31, 1682. Court
record #2126. He was granted land in Billerica in 1659, resided there for a
time until 1665. He was selectman in 1683.

Christopher was referred to as "Honorable Christopher Webb". From him is
descended the Baltimore branch of the family. For a period of seventeen years
he served as town clerk of Braintree, MA. He recorded the dates of marriages,
births, and deaths of the citizens of Braintree. He did so in the Old Style,
following the precepts set forth in the Julian Calendar. The original records
bearing the handwriting of Christopher Webb are extant in the town clerk's
office in Braintree, MA.

His marriage service was performed by Capt. Torrey of Weymouth. The civil
magistrate usually solemnized marriages. He was, undoubtedly, an inhabitant of
Braintree, nearly the whole time, from his marriage till his death, a period
of about forty year, besides what time he may have spent there before
marriage. His marriage, and the births of all his children, with one exception
are recorded in Braintree.

The exception, just referred to, is of his son Christopher, who was b. Mar.
25, 1663. It seems likely that Christopher was b. in Billerica.

In the probate of his will, he is called a "mill-wright". He was chosen
town-clerk of Braintree, May 18, 1678. In 1683 he was of Braintree, a
Commissioner for dividing John French's estate.

His will is dated April 14k, 1694; proved, June 28, 1694; recorded Suff. Prob., 13:220.

From him is descended the Baltimore branch of the Webb family.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wife: Hannah Scott #194
Married: Nov. 18, 1655 in Braintree, MA.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Born: abt. 1636 in Braintree, MA.
Died: Dec. 20, 1718 in Braintree, MA.
Father: Benjamin Scott #616
Mother: Margaret Stephenson #617
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
M Child 1: John Webb, I #201
Born: Oct. 23, 1655 in Braintree, MA.
Died: Jul. 1, 1727 in Boston, MA.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
M Child 2: Peter Webb, I #200
Born: Dec. 10, 1657 in Braintree, MA.
Died: Feb. 12, 1716 in Salem, MA.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
M Child 3: Samuel Webb, I #202
Born: Aug. 8, 1660 in Braintree, MA.
Died: Feb. 20, 1739 in Windham, CT.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F Child 4: Hannah Webb #204
Born: Sep. 5, 1665 in Braintree, MA.
Died: bef.
Hi Peter

I have you down in my records as 'unknown boy' and I didn't have your mother's maiden name, so I'm pleased to hear from you for several reasons.

I've attached a family photo and I think your father might be the little boy sitting down in it. My grandad is at left, with Alick, Reg and Stan the others I think. Their sister Edith was presumably not born yet when this was taken, maybe 1915.

If there's anything you think I can help you with on the Wrights or Webbs, let me know.

I've only joined the Ancestry website recently (and I might not be with it too long at £12.95 per month), but I am finding masses of census data on these and other families in which I'm interested, plus other people have posted their family trees with Wright and Webb links and photos in some cases, so there's lots to take in.

All the best and great to hear from you again
Regards
Shane

In checking messageboards found your name and connection to Christopher Webb of Braintree (?d. 15 Jan 1761) perhaps married to Annie White....If you are connected to this Christopher do you have any documentation of birth/death or information regarding parents Cristopher and Mary Bass? My sons are connected further along the line through Samuel Webb of Woolwich ME. Have been researching their line and would be interested in more information and avenues of research that you might suggest. Thanks, CWebb

They were quakers who migrated from England late 1600's and were closely related to the Boone family (as in Daniel Boone). Parksberg is just south of Reading PA, Berks Co PA. It is very possible this is a connection. I am particularly interested in Benjamin Webb b. 1762, his son Samuel Webb b. 1762 who married Sarah Haller, daut of a well known Rev war vet., Col. Henry Haller.

If this bible mentions any of these names, please reply to me on this board and via my email.
Thanks,
anne

Hello, I believe 2 of the Webb sisters you mention, Henrietta and Minnie, are on the 1911 census for Ontario. At http://automatedgenealogy.com you can search to see a partial transcription and then connect to a link to see the original census page.

In searching, Henrietta is listed as Henrettia, age 16, born in England, and came to Canada in 1902. She is in Keene village, Peterborough East county, and listed as a boarder in household of an elderly widow.

Minnie Webb is in Toronto Centre, at 176 Jarvis St., listed as age 19, a Domestic in a boarding house, and in household with a number of boarders. She is also listed as born in England and as came to Canada in 1902.

Were the 3 sisters sent as Home Children by Dr. Barnardos, and if so, has their agency in England been able to give you any information? Where did you obtain the information that Rose bred Samoyed dogs? Do you have any information on when or where she was breeding them? Have you contacted the Samoyed Club of Canada to see if they have any information on her? Do you know if any of these 3 sisters married?

Diana Gendron mgendron@bconnex.net P.S. I am answering on the Webb message board, although I first saw your query on the General Canada board. The administrator of the General Canada board often removes queries that do not pertain to Canada broadly. So the administration there may ransfer your query to the Webb message board.
Bible of Stephen Webb and Hannah Harlan

A few years back, there was a posting from a guy that had a bible in his possession, that listed the descendants of Stephen Webb and Hannah Harlan. For about 20 years, I've had a photocopy of an old (1880) newspaper article concerning a bible that lists, first, the children of Ezekiel Webb (1747-1828) and Cordelia Jones Webb (d. 1785) of Chester County, PA, and then the children of their son Thomas Webb (1781-1860), and his wife Hester (or Esther) Paxson (1781-1868), who settled in Unionville, Chester County, PA. When the article was written (130 years ago), the bible was in the possession of an Esther Pownall of Christiana, Lancaster County, PA; I am pretty sure she was Esther Webb (b. 1831), daughter of Henry Webb and Eliza Griffith, and granddaughter of Thomas and Hester Webb. If nothing else, it would be fun to see if we could determine if the bible still exists and who has it. The attached is the photocopy of the article.

I am researching Mary E Webb of Halifax Nova Scotia bn 1843 to Seth Webb and Francis Chandley. Family history has it that Mary (webb) Caldwell could wring a bed blanket dry with her bare hands. Her mother died young and her Miq Mac indian relatives would come in and clean her and her siblings home as her father worked days. I am quite proud of our Metis' heritage and would like to find documentary or more family lore as to our line. Seth Webb married to both Margret Clarke and Francis Amelia Chandley. Mary E. Webb married William Caldwell abt. 1868 . William Caldwell was son of Halifax N.S. 's first Mayor. Thanks
