I'm doing research on the S.S. Olympic and just found a passenger list that includes Whiteford, Alfred. I'm wondering if this is the same Alfred and, if so, if any descendants happen to know if Alfred ever talked about the fact that he was on Olympic (New York to England) when the Titanic sank in April 1912.

No, I am pretty sure he was born here. I honestly haven't spent any time on researching where that side of the family has come from. On my mother's side are Austins and Haskells who, I believe, were from Scotland and Wales. I will have to get more into this.
Thanks for checking.

Hello. Have just looked at the 1901 census he is not on there (if he was born in England do you think he could have emigrated to the USA by then), There is an Alfred Whiteford b1895 Barton Regis which was a district of Bristol and that is where I live. Could this be your Alfred Whiteford. Julie

Charles H. A. Whiteford of Penn.

Charles H. A. Whiteford

Charles H. A. Whiteford, the eldest son of Hugh C. and Cassandra (Silver) Whiteford, was born in Harford County, Md., March 27, 1839. His parents were of Scotch-Irish descent, both families being prominent in the politics and business of Harford County. He remained on his father’s farm until the age of twenty years, having, in the meantime, obtained a fair education. In 1865 he entered the mercantile business at Delta, in which he continued until 1872. He then opened, at the same place, a photograph gallery, and gave his attention to that business for some years. He married Miss. Cassandra Findley, a native of Lancaster County, December 4, 1866. They have one child living, Lizzie Grace, and have buried one in infancy. He has held the office of borough auditor for two terms, and is now principally engaged in the business of slate roofing. The Railroad House, one of the principal hotels of the place, is owned by Mr. Whiteford.

Taken from the book, “History of York County, Illustrated 1886” by John Gibson, Historical Editor

Hello Lesley. I wish I could be more of help. I have not been able to get any further with my William Henry Whiteford (he was my G.G.G. grandfather) to find his parents and if he had any siblings. As I have not established where he was born possibly he could have been Cornish. They did live in Topsham Devon some time. His wife was Dinah and she was born in Budleigh Salterton. William Henry Whiteford was a Master Mariner (Captain of a boat) he died in 1851. I keep looking for them perhaps I will have some luck. Here is my E-mail address if you should wish to get in touch TONJULM@aol.com. I live in Bristol England.

My Gr Grandmother was most definitely a Whiteford, as was her father, I was only able to glean the Whitford spelling from the convict records, John, unfortunately was illiterate which I suppose could account for the spelling of his name, and maybe this was just a consequence of the day, I tend to think they all originated from the same name. As well as Whitefords there are a great number of Whitfords in the Devon/Cornwall area and even a village by the name of Whitford in East Devon: "a delightful village nestling on the bank of the river Axe". I was always under the impression that my guy was Cornish, so did a fair bit of research in the area, until I uncovered the truth of his convict records - possibly covered up in the early days! regards

Hi Pennie
My John Whitford born in Antrim in Northern Ireland in 1803 s/o John Whitford and Jane Gow; he was transported as a convict from Armagh, Ireland in 1827 to Port Jackson (Sydney) NSW, I have no information on his family before this. The Whiteford spelling was used in the next generation, John Whitford/Whiteford was my grgrgrgrandfather and I have all the Australian information from then, however, I doubt that it would be any use to your research, as none of my lot ended up in the States, sorry. This is not to say that there was not a connection way back.
Good luck with your research! Lesley

I am looking for any information on the family of William (age 67) and Mary Dansfield (age 53) with John Dansfield (age 15) who lived in Brookfield, LaSalle County on the 1850 Census. I believe that John married a Sarah E. Harris between 1859/1861. John serverd in the Civil War, dying at the Battle of Franklin, Tenn on 11/30/1864. and Sarah drew widows pension on him. She married a William Whiteford sometime in 1865 (I believe). I found her and William Whiteford listed on the 1870 Census for Town of Brookfield. Any help that you could give to me on this family would be greatly appreciated.

In amongst some old photographs of my wife’s family I came across a photograph with the following written on the back; John DONALDSON II, Agnes WHITEFORD C1880. The strange part is that they have no known connection with my wife’s family. According to the IGI they were married on the 6th July 1860 in Kilbirnie, Ayr, Scotland. In 1881 they may be living at 14 Buchanan St, Johnstone (Abbey district,) Renfrew, Scotland. There is a daughter Mary, aged 11, born in Dalry (IGI confirms), a son Robert, aged 14 born in Glasgow and another son, John, aged 7 born in Johnstone.

I would appreciate a contact from anyone who may be connected to this family and will be happy to send a copy of the photograph.

(If this message has been Gatewayed to a Mailing List please reply via the appropriate message area by following the link or e-mail a direct reply.
