Hello I'm researching my husband's family, and Thomas J. Cate, born in Allenstown, NH 1808 and died in Hooksett 1877 married Louisa F. Wiggin. Louisa was born 1812 and died 1874 in Hooksett. Does she tie into the Thomas Wiggin line? Would appreciate any info on Louisa. Thank you, Pat Cate

Dorothea,
Thank you for your information. I have the data on the "Northeast Pipers" simply based on my speculation that my husband's Piper lineage is connected, with the connection yet to be proven.
As for ABIGAIL CHURCH WIGGINS, (1737-1824) her name and marriage to STEPHEN PIPER (1733-1797), was found in "The Genealogy of the Piper Family," by Horace Piper, 1889, Washington D.C., pg 100, item 16.
As for the difference by one year of her year of birth. You will frequently note a double date for some, and a difference of the one year due to the change to the Gregorian Calendar. The American Colonies did not accept this change until 1752.
As far as I know, the particular ABIGAIL CHURCH WIGGINS m. to STEPHEN PIPER, was the only marriage, and there were 12 Piper children.
Another WIGGINS researcher I once corresponded with is Bradley Sigler. The last email I had for him was bradsigler@mhcable.com He once had a website of his findings, but I do not know if he maintains one any more.
Due to multiple family problems, I rather dropped from the genealogical scene about a year ago, after 9 years of 8 hours a day doing what I love. Placing my family first, I removed my own databases and have kept low key for now.
Sorry I cannot help you with what you seek. There were more than one Abigail Wiggins individuals, and more than one Abigail Church individuals. Several historical publications recorded that Abigail Church Wiggins m. Stephen Piper. I did not note one that cited a marriage to another individual. It may yet be out there.

Good luck.
Re: Abigail Church Wiggin

Hello, In my family tree I have found the name of Abigail Church Wiggin born August 28, 1738 in Stratham, Rockingham, New Hampshire and died November 28, 1824 in Stratham, Rockingham, New Hampshire: daughter of Thomas Wiggin and Sarah Piper. She married Clement Davis who was born May 3, 1745 in Durham, Strafford, New Hampshire and died March 10, 1825. Abigail is his second wife. I can find no documentation concerning any children they may have had. It is documented that Clement was in the Revolutionay War. According to my informant Abigail is probably buried at the Old Davis Family Cemetery in Lee, Strafford, New Hampshire, which is located: Farm road between Lee Hill and Wadley's Falls, Lee NH 39 Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots, Vol. 1.
I also have this note: From the History of Stratham, New Hampshire by Charles M. Nelson: "...Abigail Wiggin, daughter of Captain Thomas Wiggin the 3rd, (in 1754) married Stephen Piper."
I am descended through Clement Davis by way of his son Samuel but can find no concrete evidence that he had a son Samuel. There is supposed to be a family Bible with names and dates but only the possessor of that Davis Bible knows where it is.
I have presented what I have on Abigail and hope it may fill in a few holes for you. I would hope that there may be some evidence of Clement and his children that you may be able to share with me.
Thank you
Dorothea (Davis) Blaha

I went to England on Sept 1st, on what was to be a 12-day trip to gather photographs with which to finish the book and reveal who I have found to be our immigrant ancestor. I fell on Sept 3rd in London and had to fly immediately back to the US for emmergency surgery...and so now I must return once more to England before I can finalize the book. I am so sorry as I had sort of promised you all to reveal my finds the first quartwe of 2008. My recovery and rehab sessions will take a little time, but I am aiming for a return trip by Spring of 2008. Fortunately I was able to get in my KEW/PRO research prior to falling, so the documents I needed are in hand. Bear with me for awhile longer please.

Juanita: I think you will find the information you need in the extended volumes of the Wiggin Genealogy by Arthur C. Wiggin, Agnes P. Bartlett and Alexander Lincoln which was done for the Library of the New Hampshire Historical Society. (The first volume goes only through Generation 8). Maurice Elliott Wiggin is listed as a son of John W. Wiggin, who in turn is the son of Alonzo L. Wiggin (#3686 in the numbering system they used.) Gordon isn't listed as a son of Maurice's but my guess is that the research was done before he was born Opel is the last child, born in 1930. Hope this helps!

What has been widely reported as their marriage license is acutally an application for marriage dated ll JUL 1633. I have a photycopy of it from the Guildhall in London. It reads in part "Thomas Wiggin, widower aged appx 46 and Catharine Whiting, spinster aged 32" The application was for the marriage to take place at, I believe St Margarets on New Fish Street. Unfortunatly the church and all marriage records went up in the Great Fire of 1666 since the church was only 1 1/2 blocks from the origin of the fire.

I do know in 1624 he petitioned the Crown for a letter of Marque against France. That would have to be in relationship to his being a ship's Captain. Need to pursue that info also.

Thomas Wiggin's Origins

Am very interested in what you have on Thomas Wiggin's connection with Shrewsbury. I know he was involved with a group of Merchants from there but could have made the contact in London. If you have info that would pin it down would live to have it. Will be going back to England in a couple of years and can perhaps do some personal searching.

yes, i'd be greatly interested. i've seen a copy of a marriage cert. dated june, 1633 in london, england. i've been wanting to write to london to get my own copy but they tell me i need the name of the church or parish. i had heard "rumors" for years that thomas was from sherwsberry but could never pin point it. the family has a contract by thomas to nathanell fryer dated may 12th, 1663 if you'd like, i'd be more than happy to e-mail it to or send you a copy on parchment paper. thanks, al.

Thanks Nancy, I have received some great information and my next step will be the research at the New hampshire Historical Society. Maurice had three children, Lorraine, Opal, and Gordon. Gordon was born in 1936 in Wakefield, NH but the family moved to Massachusetts before he was 2. They lived in Sanbornville NH until they moved, and visited family there often through the years. Gordon and I, married in the 50's and had 7 children and now I am trying to put together some family history for the grandchildren. Maurice married Mary Cook from Sanbornville and now I'm searching for information on Mary Cook's parents and her line. (my mother in law now deceased). Her parents were Elmer(1866-1939) and Lillian Cook (1869 - 1933) buried in the Lovell Lake cemetary in Sanbornville, Wakefield, NH. Thanks again, Juanita

Hi Al, I notice that you have done extensive research on your Wiggin line. I have traced ours (my husband is Gordon Wiggin) to John William Wiggin born in 1853 in Maine. He brought his familly up in Tuftonborough NH and is buried in Sanbornville NH. Just wondering if there might be some connection. I have been told that our line goes back to Thomas and Sara Barefoot but have not been able to verify that yet. My husband's father was Maurice E. Wiggin. I think that was John William's youngest son. John William Wiggin had 7 children- Albert, Harry Lindey, Edward Perley (we always knew him as Perley), Leila, Rosco, Austin, and Maurice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Juanita

i've seen several books, one in particular, by a Robinson wrtten around 1952, that has done a pretty extensive research of the seven generations of the thomas line. but all the books fail to find thomas' birthplace and parents. for years i've had a copy of thomas' and cathern's wedding cert. and have "ment" to write off to london and see if the parents of the bride and groom were mentioned. of course, his father had to be an "andrew". every son for many generations had his fathers' name or an uncles'. i'm from the gov. thomas, thomas, thomas, thomas, joshia, levi, james, albert b., charles h., albert h., albert h. line. yes, i'm the third and yes, there's a forth. when my 2nd great-grandfather died, he left several heirlooms from 1663, 1669, and 1713, to his son frank b. my great-grandfather had died of tb in 1895. when frank b. died in 1949 in MA, he passed these things to my grandfather living in IL. anywho, thanks for the lead. if i can be of some help in your search, let me know. my stuff is pretty basic and i'm in need of help with james, who left NH to ME around 1800. albert b. was born in vassalboro, ME in 1820. he married abigail a. clark and had charles h. in 1851 in bangor, ME. charles had a sister, ella tolman, who married into the henry m. reed family of benton, ME. this is where i'd like more info about his sister(s) and the reed family. thaks again, al wiggin
