Balsom may be his mother's maiden name. An older couple appears on the 1850 Ohio census in Union Co. in proximity with the Bailey family. We have a family(?) photo of an Indian couple in mostly Euopean dress of the Civil War period. Oral history was that Balsom was part Indian through his mother, a second wife look down on by her step-children. Please see messages in the Bailey Msg Board for more info including complete listing of Balsom's parents and siblings. Tricia

Don't know if this is any help but...my grandfather was William John Balsom, Jr. b. 2/1/1877 in Stoneville, Michigan. m. Anna Jane Semmens 1905. His father was William John Balsom, Sr. b. 1839 in Tavistock, Devon England. m. Mary Grace Perkins on August 1, 1863. They left Tavistock to go to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. GGrandfather was a stone mason, did work for the mines in UP. Later moved to Norway, Michigan. My grandfather was a blacksmith in Norway and later in Iron Mountain, Michigan. William Sr. and Mary Grace had six dau. Lucy Pierce, Mary E.P.(Polly), Flora (Flo), Eliza (Lide), Emma, and Rose. My grandfather only son. Both ggrandparents buried in Norway. This is the first time I have found the last name of Balsom on the Internet. We may not be of any relation, but who knows? Let me know if any of these names connect with yours. To Peggy, Thanks for your note, my ggrandfather came from Tavistock, Devon England, as far as I know he was the only member of his family to come to the U.S. He traveled directly to the Upper Peninsula. It is not a common name, but I don't think we have any Indian blood on that side of my family. Jerry
