My mother's name is Benedetta Salerno. Her family came to America from San Fratello, Italy. My grandmother's name was Rosalia Salerno. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Robert-
Just yesterday, I asked my neighbor, Sal Salerno, how far back he knew his family in Italy, and he handed me a copy of his grandfather's birth record. We were sharing a Thanksgiving Dinner at Sal's house! Today I found your message, and here is a name straight from that record in the same town! Sal's grandfather had the same name as he does- Salvatore Salerno, born 5 June 1877 in San Fratello, son of Antonino Salerno and Rosalia Mondello. Salvatore married Carolina Virzi. Apparently there was a mudslide or landslide in the town which caused records to become lost or damaged, so going back any further may not be easy, or perhaps impossible. Do you know, or have you heard of Sal? Did Benedetta have a brother named Salvatore (or could she have had...)? Where in America did Benedetta live, and did Rosalia live with her? Did Rosalia not come to America with a husband? Where is Rosalia buried? Is Benedetta still living? If not, when did she die, and where is she buried?

Please contact me- my email address is TerTerOli@email.msn.com

Thanks Robert!

Robert,
My grandparents came from San Fratello also. My grandfather's name is Benedetto. He had brothers named Anthony, Joseph, and Alfred. He had sisters named Benedetta Tripodo, Rosalia LoScatzo, and Mariano Artina. If any of these names sound familiar, let me know. I am trying to trace our family tree, but I do not know the names of my grandfather's mother and father. I know that my grandfather settled in the state of Ohio with Joseph and Alfred.

Hi dqbonnieblue,
Thanks so much for the email. We do have some name similarities. My Grandmother Rosalia Salerno left 2 children with her parents in San Fratello, Sicily, when she came to America. She came to America with her sister, Felicia. Grandma Rosalia children's names in San Fratello were Benedetto and Graziella. On her ship's manifest it states that she also had 2 sisters in San Fratello named Marianna and Benedetta. Your Grandfather's name Benedetto and his 3 sisters names, Rosalia, Mariano (Marianna) and Benedetta all match my Family's names. I have more information but let's first see if we have a connection based on the similarities. My Grandmother Rosalia settled in Harlem, New York.
Best Regards,
Robert D'Ambrosio
