DOB (1867) may be an estimate. James Simpson Tolan's first wife's name was Adella Fulmer. Adella's father was W.K. Fulmer and her mother was Sarah McQueen, all of Caledonia, Kent County, Michigan. Family settled in New York after emigrating from Ireland (perhaps Sligo County), and some were in the lumber business. James Simpson Tolan had at least one sster, possibly named Mary (married name: Hammond).

Hi Susan

Would you have any more information on the Fulmers? Adella was my husbands Great Aunt. Also is there any family that still lives in Michigan on either side Fulmer or Tolan?

Thanks in advance for your help

I have just a little information on Adella Fulmer's family, specifically on her father, W. K. (William) Fulmer. I got it from "Biographies from the History of Kent County, Chas. C. Chapman Co., 1881. (Kent County is around Grand Rapids, Michigan.) "W.K. Fulmer, Caledonia twp. W.K. Fulmer was born in the tp. of Mersea, county of Essex, Pro. of Ontario, Can., June 8, 1838. His parents, John and Elizabeth (Wilkinson) Fulmer, were natives respectively of Virginia and Pennsylvania, and were of German and Irish ancestry. They both died in Mersea. Mr. Fulmer was reared on his father's farm on concession 3, lot 2, tp. of Mersea, where he remained until 30 years of age. He had the advantages of a thorough common-school education, and was married at 24, at Kingsville, Can., to Sarah McQueen. The marriage occurred March 16, 1862. Mr. Fulmer managed his father's farm eight or ten years, and then opened a store for the sale of general merchandise in the village of Ruthven, Can. He exchanged his business for a farm near his father's homestead, and in the following April moved to Caledonia, where he engaged in the grain traffic for one year, then removing to Hammond, where he has similarly occupied and managed a hotel at that place. May 3, 1881, he returned to Caledonia, and is now the genial and popular proprietor of the Caledonia House, having in connection therewith a livery. Mr. Fulmer owns the celebrated imported stallion "Rpyal George," which is on exhibition at his stables. He owns also the homestead farm in Canada, and the farm for which he exchanged his business in Ruthven. Mrs. Fulmer died July 30, 1879, leaving four children--Adella D., Wm. Harvey, Ernest A. and Ward, all except the youngest, who is in Canada, living at home. Mr. Fulmer was married again June 181, 1880, at Grand Rapids, to Mrs. Mate Wheeler, born in New York. He is a Republican."

I have the marriage certificate of Adella and James Simpson Tolan, married 5/21/1889 at Caledonia, kent County, Michigan, both age 21. Witnesses Adelbert A. McQueen and Libbie Kennedy.

James and Adella had five surviving children: Simpson Clyde, J. Ross (called Ross), Robert John, Dorothy Ann, and Clifford Adelbert. Simpson and Robert had children and many of their children and grandchildren are still alive and (mostly) living in the Caledonia area. I could put you in touch with some of them if you like. Robert's grandson Lynn's wife Luana Tolan have been very helpful to me and interested in the family lineage. Luana's email is ltolan@voyager.net. Ross, Dorothy, and Cliff had no children. I have birth, death and marriage dates and places (also spouses names) on many of the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. My grandmother, Arlotta, who was the child of James Tolan and his second wife, Hazel Hembling, is still alive at age 90 and very sharp, living, in Manistee, Michigan. I have complete information on her descendants.

On online search lead me to information on John Fulmer's parents (W.K.'s grandparents), John Casper Fulmer and Margaret Ann Fox. Elizabeth Wilkinson's parents were John Wilokinson and Mary Kidd. I have birth death and marraige dates and places on John Casper Fulmer and Elizabeth Wilkinson (but some inconsistencies).

Let me know what information you want and I will be happy to provide it. Do you have any information on this line to share?

Susan

James Simpson Tolan, b.1867, would be my great, great Grandfather. I was wondering if you had more information going back farther. Even along the Fulmer line. Particularly, the origin of our line in Ireland. I am going to be travelling there in August, and look some things up.

More info about me: Simpson Clyde is my great grandfather, and Ward is my grandfather.

I am just beginning to look into my ancestors and any info you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Traci

Traci,

I have quite a bit of information on this Tolan line and on the Fulmer line as well. Lots of it is written in the postings I have made to this site, but I will send you all of the information I have if you contact me via e-mail and give me your US mail (street) address. My email address is "superkins@aol.com." Unfortunately, the trail stops when the family comes to this country and I have nothing on their origins in Ireland. I wish I did! My grandmother told me that her father was born on Ellis Island, just after his parents (James Simpson Tolan Sr. and Jane Henry) and grandparents (Simpson Ross Tolan and ?) arrived in this country. I wrote to New York city and they were unable to find a birth certificate, however I have documented the family in NYC directories shortly thereafter. I have been trying to hire a New York City genealogist to look further there, but her keeps blowing me off! I had the pleasure of meeting Lee and Shirley Tolan (Lee is Ward's brother) this summer at my grandmother's 90th birthday party. I think Lee and his sister Margarent Tolan Heintz are the last surviving children of Simpson Clyde Tolan and Della Schroeder. I have written to both of them for family information and gotten nothing. Perhaps you could fill in some family blanks for me. I sure would appreciate it. Please email me.
