Hi Lynn,

Don't have info on your Battye relatives, but I also have Battye members on my family tree Elijah born c 1818 Upperthong, Huddersfield. He had children some of which were named Ruth, Reyia, German.

If you recognise any of those names we could be distant relatives, if not good luck searching for your family tree members.

Regards
Suzan

Hi, fellow researchers

I'm not sure how big Holmfirth is, but I have a William Battye harking from there and arriving in South Australia with a few other Battye relatives (Sth Aust marriage records reveal that there were a number of families of Battye in the district - were they cousins? this is to be determined - Charles Alfred, son of Ben married in 1880 in Millicent SA; Albert, son of Thomas married in 1881 at Victor Harbor SA; George, son of William married in 1886 at Hindmarsh; Ezra, widowed son of George married in 1890 in Adelaide; William; son of Benjamin married 1891 at Mt Gambier etc)
but I offer the following should the puzzle piece fit.

in the Observer 9 Sep 1916 p20e ...
"Mr William Battye. The death occurred at the Bluff, Encounter Bay on Saturday last, of Mr William Battye, practically the oldest residenct of the district, who was in his 84th year. he came from Holm forth, Yorkshire in the ship Mermaid, 61 years ago, and settled at Encounter Bay, Sth Aust. He was the promoter of the bark industry and shipped large quantites from the old Bluff Jetty. he possessed a striking personality and could tell many an interesting story concerning the old whaling days in the south. he was widely known and highly respected. his wife died about 2 years ago. He has left a family of six children. Mrs AR Cakebread (Victoria), Mrs J W Gribble (Victor Harbor) Mrs H Wilkinson (Port Pirie) Miss ML Battye (Encounter Bay) and Messrs W and G Battye."

I would however like to carry the line back from William born 26 Sep 1832 Holmfirth; son of Thomas born abt 1815.
William married Elizabeth Lee Turner 1833-1914 dau of Jonathon Turner. They were married a month before their departure to Australia.

cheers,

Hi there,

I have only recently begun my research but my Mother was Joan Battye born in Bury, Lancashire in 1929. However, her father (John Battye) was from Yorkshire and generations back to the early 1800' have the Battyes living in Homfirth.

The family I can definitely confirm - Charles Rockley Battye (lived in Yeadon, Yorkshire) born in 1873. I believe his father was Rockley Battye (b. 1853 in Yeadon) but after that it is partly guesswork. I believe his father was John Battye (b. 1824 in Meltham Yorkshire), and I believe his father was Joshua Battye (b. Aug 1796 in Holmfirth, d. 1874 in Holmfirth).

Ironically, my Mother now lives at Port Elliot SA, about 15 minutes from Victor Harbor. I hope to add some photographs to my tree in the near future and perhaps that will help some out there.

Kind regards,
Paul Colley
