Hello, I'm looking for any informaion on my McGee/McGhees from Ayrshire, Scotland. I have:

John McGhee, born about 1830. He married Margaret Faulder on 3/7/1857 in Old Cumnock, Ayr. Their children were David, born 19/2/1858, Margaret born 1/6/1859, John born 7/6/7861, Mary born 25/3/1863, Agnes born 6/6/1865, Jane born 7/8/1867, Annie Walkingshaw (would love to know where that name came from!) born 14/12/1869, John born 8/2/1872 and Elizabeth born 19/4/1874. Elizabeth's death entry says she was born prematurely (in the 6th month) and died after 2 days. Her mother died the next day. John went on to marry Mary Ann McGrady in 1880.

John's Marriage certs give his parents as David McGee and Margaret Gillies.

I have recently alot of the above info around John's family, but I cannot find his birth. Would love any info you may have about this family.

(My connection is through John's daughter Agnes, who married Hugh MILLIGAN).

many thanx
Kelly

My McGee ancestor was Patrick Stuart McGee who married Mary Speer in the Carolinas (probably SC) sometime before the Revolutionary War.

Part of the family says the McGee family came from Ireland and others say Scotland.

Could as a matter of fact be both.

Did any of your line go to the Carolinas and settle somewhere around Burke County North Carolina?

My McGee family came first to the US from Island Magee in Ireland and I am working to take them back to Scotland where our family history says they came from, but I need to find a name past where I am. That may take some doing.

That's where I am, at Patrick Staurt McGee born ca 1760 in Colonial Carolinas USA. I need to get back to his parents and to the first of the family to show up in the Carolinas.

Hopefully

I don't think I have any connection with the Carolinas. I have traced my line back to 1690 and it has remained in Ayrshire. The McGees did have big families and it is possible that some emigrated to the States in the 1700s, but I don't have any knowledge of this. I know that a few offshoots went to Canada in the mid-1800s. Thanks for your interest,

John McGee

Hi Linda,

I have gotten back to around 1690 with my McGees and I am still in Ayrshire. I have not come across any connection with Islandmagee although I did sail past it last year going into Belfast. Thanks for your interest and happy hunting,

John McGee

Patrick Stuart McGee census 1800 Burke County, NC age 26 - 45 is probably mine. The female child about 16 is probably Elizabeth Mcgee, my 3gmother who married Hiram Kelly in Burke County about 1810.

If these are the correct people, this is the first time we have known the size and siblings in that family in that time and place.

Other than Elizabeth and father Patrick and mother Mary Speer, we have had little luck in putting names to the rest of them.

Some clues are found in land records showing Kelly and McGee lived close to each other in Habersham County, GA around 1830.
