Malo Foti,

If you search my name Leatapo your parents will tell you that Sinapati had three brothers and one sister. One of the brothers was named Leatapo (taulelea name) and later took on the name of Lesolo (matai).

I find this search for Salanoa name fascinating because so far the Salanoa family from Fagasa is mentioned. The root of the Salanoa family is in Falefa, Samoa from the great aiga of SaFenunuivao whose lineage comes the Tupua Tamasese title. It is of this lineage that the tootoo of LufiLufi decides who will be the Tupua Tamasese. The suafa (title) of Salanoa is formally Lealaisalanoa.

The question then becomes are all Salanoa family related? I don't know. But, I do know that our family from Tula are direct descendants of Falefa. I have been to Falefa and met with Iuli who explained how our family come to live in Tula. As in Tula, Iuli title is the matua of Salanoa family. Iuli told me that our great great grandfather Salanoa Iuli married the taupou of Pago Pago Tulimalefoi. And his wife wanted to stay in Tutuila and then established a village of Tula. This marriage becomes more evident when the paramount chief Mauga dies (maliu). High Chief Salanoa plays the important role as Tamasa who oversees the funeral arrangements. (fue lagi) I wasn;t surprise when I met Iuli Veni in 1988 in Falefa that he said my brother and I were suli moni of the family. My mother always told us that we came from Falefa and Iuli just confirmed it. Too bad he died. If you watched Tupua Tamasese Efi coronation in 1984 you could see him being the tootoo guest along with Moeono, the matua of Leutele.

I don't know if Falefa recognizies the other Salanoa familes like in Fagasa and Laulii of American Samoa. If you compare and contrast each village faalupega Tula is the closest. Having the same high chief, matua, and taupou. I hope this discourse help others to seek for themselves how they are related to the Salanoas in Falefa, Samoa.

I never met your grandfather or his kids. My mother is Fuatapu Salanoa whose father was Leatapo one of Sinapati's brothers. Looking forward to talking with you.

Leatapo Tupua Salanoa

In regards to the title of Salanoa from my understanding also is my grandfather Leatapo does have 3 brothers their names are Panini, Pagapa and Sinapati with their one and only sister Saepau. Growing up I would here tales from my father Porotesano son of Leatapo who was married to Fuatapu telling us that The village of Tula was discover by the Salanoa Family the 1 and only original Salanoa not the so called wanna be's like Aumoeualogo which that last name isn't theirs either. Anyways, I could never seem to know who is my grandfather's father. If you do know please keep me posted... Lucky you. I wish I could go there in Upolu and meet the extended families you had more knowledge on our family history than me. I would love to chit chat some more and learn more.

Talofa!
If your grandfather is Leatapo Salanoa, is your great grandmother Vita Tuinei?? you are right, Leatapo had brothers and sisters. They are: Panini, Panana, Leatapo, Sinapati, Saepa'u and Salofi.
My grandmother was Saepa'u.
I am doing research on that side of my father's family. I would love to hear from you. Please email me @ crafty4life@aol.com.

Your knowledge of our "Salanoa" story is very similar to what I had been told by my father. He told me how the name "Lealaisalanoa" name came to be. It's very fascinating in deed! He also told me about Iuli and Tulimalefo'i, whom was the daughter of Mauga, of Pago Pago village.

I had been doing family history on my Salanoa side, and proud to say that I have at least 7 to 8 generations completed. I am still searching...I understand the 'Salanoa' family tree has many, many roots and has spread all over the globe. In fact, we are having a 'Salanoa' reunion in Laie, next year in July. The reunion is put together by the children of Taetafe Satele Faasou Salanoa, who was married to Leutu Fagafue. Taetafe, was the son of Alofaleti Lealaisalanoa (Iuli, of Tula village. Alofaleti, was my great great greatgrandfather.

Please email me @ crafty4life@aol.com. I would love to share infos with you on our 'Salanoa' family.

Malo lave,

Yes, my great grandmother is Vita of Tuinei family. Well, it's nice to meet a relative of Saepa'u, my great aunt, that I heard of as a child from my mother who is Fuatapu. I understand that they had only one sister and that was Saepa'u. Anyway, I forgot what village she lived with her husband, but I know it's somewhere in Sisifo side of Tutuila. Maybe you can enlightened me on that. Feel free to write me at leatapo@gmail.com. I would love to help sort out our family tree.

Soifua,

Leatapo Fesili

Surnames: mauga
In my research of the treaty between mauga and hoover i have seemed to lose track of a daughter tulimalefoi and any descendents after Mauga Palepoi Afamasaga passed away. Is the reason why no further Mauga were determined after 1963 because there were no descendents? Did the lineage just stop? Any answers would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you!
