I just came to find out that Lanam used to be spelled Lanum and Lanham. My grandparents had to change their spelling when my dad got married.

Amber....how are you related and why did they have to change the name when your dad got married? My dad told me a story that his side of the family changed from Lanham to Lanam because there was a horse thief in the family.. but I've talked to a lot of Lanam descendents and none can substantiate that...must just be a family rumor.

I only know that my dad got married in Canada and that my nana and grampa got their name changed at that time. They were already using Lanam.

From Lanum to Lanam

Amber

Did they change from Lanum to Lanam? When Thomas Piles Lanham first got to Ohio, some of his children were recorded as Lanum in the census. Many people back then could not read or write and so wrote the names the way they sounded. His other children were recorded using the Lanam spelling. Thus, you will see our family name being spelled, Lanum, Lanham, and Lanam and occasionally other ways such as Lanaham, Linham, Linum etc. Sure makes tracing them difficult, eh?
