I am in the process of identifying the descendants of my paternal 3rd great-grandparents, a James McMonigle and Osse Jacobs of Southwestern Pennsylvania (Allegheny County & Washington County). To-date, I have identified over 4,000 descendants of James and Osse through five children. Four of their children would make Harrison County, Indiana their home at one time or another. I have extensive information on many of the descendant family lines; however, there are some lines where I have reached a dead-end. One of the family lines where I have reached a dead-end is that of James Clinton FUNKHOUSER (1856-????) and his wife, Sarah Inez JACOBS (1859-????). James and Sarah had ten identified children. James and his family left Harrison County shortly after the 1860 census for Tolu, Criittendan Co., Kentucky and later moved to Blodgett, Scott Co., Missouri. I need anything on this family line. Also seeking anything on Alfred GRASS (????-????) and his wife, Indiana MCMONIGLE (1843?-????). Moved from Harrison County, Indiana for parts unknown, possibly Nebraska. Need any information. I have extensive family information on various Jacobs, Applegate, Cunningham, Tindall, and Hurst families. Will provide or share information.

David,

Alfred GRASS 1839 - 1875, was a son of my 2nd great grandparents William GRASS and Priscilla CRAWFORD. He married Indiana McMONIGLE 17 March 1861, in Harrison county, Indiana. After the death of Alfred, Indiana went to Waco, York County, Nebraska where she died in 1899. Can give you data on four of their children, contact me direct.

Thanks for all of your information. I would appreciate any more material you have on the Applegate/ Jacobs Families. Is there any family histories that have been published? I know years ago there was a Mr. Montgomery in Leavensworth In.writing some on the Jacobs family tree, but he passed away abt.1973. Also Mr. Beanblossom(Mauckport) was doing some research on the Jacobs family. He is deceased also.I was told that Nancy Lovelace Was full blooded Indian and that her brother killed one of ggrandfather's(Jacobs) brothers. Anyway I could help on finding information I would gladly do so. I am fairly sure that my husband is not related to me as he is not from Harrison Co., I met and married him in N.C. I know that there are Reeds that were married to Applegates.(Juanita Applegate m. Reed)I was born and raised in and around Mauckport and central area. Who are your Parents?

Thanks for your response. My interest in the surname of Applegate and Jacobs is wide and varied. For years I have been identifying the descendants of my paternal 3rd great-grandparents, a James McMonigle and Osse Jacobs of Southwestern Pennsylvania. James and Osse had five children, three of whom married Applegate's and two married Jacobs. Your ancestor, Admiral Nelson Jacobs was a brother to a John P. Jacobs who married Sarah McMonigle. My 2nd great-grandmother McMonigle was Nancy Jacobs. I have not established the relationship between Osse, John P. and Nancy. I believe there is probably an inter-relationship but I am working on it. I have a large Jacobs data base for Harrison County based Jacobs families. My records show the following for your line:

William W. Jacobs (1910-1974) & Mary M McAdams (1925)/Jessie M. Hester (1930)

Alva S. Jacobs (1886-1959) & Nancy J. Applegate (1891-1965)

David Jacobs (1846-1897) & Nancy A. Lovelace (1848-1904)

Admiral N. Jacobs (1811-1893) & Elizabeth Wiseman (????-????)

APPLEGATE LINE -

Marshall Applegate (1860-1944) & Sarah Shewmaker (1849-1943)

John Applegate (1801-1874) & Mary Flannigan (????-????)

William Applegate (1766-1844) & Mary Walker (1768-1844)

Incidentally, my great-grandmother McMonigle was Elizabeth Reed (1850-1920). Her father was Samuel Reed (1820-1862) and mother was Louisa A. Beard (1820-1884).

I have a maternal line 2nd great-grandmother, Mary McAdams (1808-????)

If you would like any additional material or have any questions, let me know.

Thanks for your reply. My research in several locations has not revealed a published family history on the historic Jacobs families of Harrison County. I believe they are primarily descended from a Jacobs family of siblings who migrated to Harrison County from the Southwestern corner of Pennsylvania with the Applegates, McMonigles, and other families. The earliest I can place John P. Jacobs and Sarah McMonigle in Harrison County is about 1828. I believe they came from Washington County, Pennsylvania. John P. Jacobs was reportedly born in Jamesport, Pennsylvania but I have not been able to locate this village. This would give some hint as to where the whole Jacobs clan would have their roots.

My father was born and raised in Harrison County around New Amsterdam and Valley City. In fact, I attended half of the second grade in Valley City. My direct McMonigle line is as follows: David L. McMonigle (1935), Darby W. McMonigle (1901-1965), Henry F. McMonigle (1878-1962), Andrew J. McMonigle (1842-1904), Daniel McMonigle (1803-1880, James McMonigle (1768-????), and William McMonigle (1733-1777).

The above Daniel McMonigle migrated to Harrison County from Southwestern Pennsylvania (via Kentucky) in 1830.

I have identified Osse "Polly" Jacobs' parents and siblings but I have not been able to connect the various Jacobs individuals who married into the McMonigle line in two generations. I will continue to work on it. I have been entering numerous queries wherever I think I can find information. The search goes on.

I have corresponded with lady in Minnesota who is also descended from Admiral Nelson Jacobs. I will look up her name and address and let you know.

Thanks again.

My father, Ralph May, and I used to visit two elderly sisters in Laconia, Harrison County, Indiana, name "Ellie" and "Til" (possibly Matilda?) Jacobs. My uncle, Sidney May, bought their house and property after their deaths. Does anyone remember these ladies?
