I have been reading some of this board and find it odd that people with information do not post it and only offer the knowledge to certain few to fulfill their control queen issues

I have a copy of the Vulgamore line and am posting it here... I don't want any money for this...but I do hope that what I share you will share with others who haven't found this site yet.

Please let me know if you find mistakes, my human nature will from time to time make them. Have a good day and be proud of who you come from....ALWAYS ;)

Descendants of John Martin Fulkamore

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN MARTIN1 FULKAMORE1 was born Bet. 1745 - 1750 in Germany1,2, and died Bet. May 18 - June 29, 1821 in Hampshire County, Virginia, now West Virginia3.

Notes for JOHN MARTIN FULKAMORE:
John was not in the Virginia census for 1790, 1800, or 1810 even though he was in Hampshire County , VA at that time. In the 1820 census for Hampshire County he is listed in the published list as Fulkmo__, John, but no age is checked for him. He should have been at least 21 when he bought land in 1770 and would have been in his 70's when he died in 1821.
His will listed much land but no slaves, very unusual for that time in Virginia. Some form of naturalization for immigrants who were not British citizens had existed in the New World colonies from very early times. Men had to be naturalized before they could buy, own, or convey property, and their wives and children became citizens when the husbands were naturalized. Between 1740 and 1776 the men were required to have 7 years of continuous residence in the colony before they could be naturalized. If this 7-year residency was required for John Martin Fulkamore when he was naturalized in 1769, that means he entered the colony of either Pennsylvania or New Jersey about 1762 and that he was not a child who was naturalized when his father was. From the New Jersey archives: "An act to naturalize . . . John Martin Fulkemer . . . Sect. 1. Whereas . . . John Martin Fulkemer . . . by their humble petition have set forth, that they were born under the Dominion of Foreign Powers, in Amity with Great Britian; but are now settled, or are desirous of settling within this province of New Jersey . . . and as they profess the Protestant religion . . . Duty, Loyalty and affection to his Majesty King George the Third . . . December 1769 . . . This bill is passed."
John bought land from a widow, Charity Elmore in a deed dated November 6, 1770, Hampshire County, VA. He paid 60 pounds of Pennsylvania currency for 400 acres of land said to be of Manfield Township in the County of Burlington West New Jersey. This tract was called Dillons Run. Later John bought land in Piketon Township and Greenfield Township, Highland County, OH. He was listed in the 1807 tax lists for Scioto County. He bought 285 acres in Piketon Township in 1811 and an additional 145 acres there in 1811.
On November 20, 1795 he bought an additional, adjacent, 100 acres, "granted by the Commonwealth unto John M. Folkimer."
John then started buying property in the western lands north of the Ohio River, now in Piketon Township, Pike County, OH, and in Greenfield Township, Highland County, OH. There are also 2 listings for John Vulgamore in the 1807 tax lists for Scioto County, OH.
"Tract Book and Entries - Congress Lands - U.S. Military Lands -Refugee - Vol 2 Chillicothe District - Auditor of State" lists certificates #2727 for 284.93 acres in Piketon Township (2/20/ 1812); #2729 144.78 acres in Piketon Township (2/20/1812).

4. ASA MARTIN2 VULGAMORE (JOHN MARTIN1 FULKAMORE) was born Bet. 1775 - 178021, and died Bef. October 30, 183522. He married (1) ELIZABETH23 Abt. 1800 in Hampshire County, WV23. She died Bet. 1810 - 182024. He married (2) POLLY CLUTTER January 16, 1821 in Pike County, OH25, daughter of JOSEPH CLUTTER. She died Aft. December 25, 182526.

Notes for ASA MARTIN VULGAMORE:
Asa Martin Vulgamore bought land in southern Ohio but its location is difficult to ascertain because he and his family bought land there before the present counties were established. They bought land in Ross and Adams County until Scioto County was formed in 1803. Pike County was formed in 1815 from parts of Ross, Adams, Scioto, and Highland counties, and part of Pike was then taken in 1816 for Jackson County. This is taken from Indexes of Chilicothe Ohio Land Office, 1801-1820. On July 16, 1801, by certificate @218, A. Fulkamore and Elias Lanham, residents of Ross County bought 1,20.6 acres in Section 11, fraction 10, Township4, Range 22, in Ohio Northwest Territory. He also received federal land patent #918, (from President James Madison) May 12, 1809 for Range 22, Township 4, Section 11, in Winchester, VA. Other land was bought and sold by Asa over the years.
When Asa died in 1835 his personal estate (all but the land) was sold for $1,122.80. A saddle blanket sold for $11 and a wagon and spreader for $33. Forty bushels of wheat cost $33.60, one crib of corn cost $100. His estate included 6 horses, 18 cows and calves, 4 lots of hogs ($160 total), and a corner cupboard for $7.
By 1850 all of Asa Martin Fulgamore/Vulgamore's children were either dead or had moved away from Pike County, OH. Joseph had died in Pike County
[Source: "Vulgamore/Fulkamore Family History, page 16 - 23]
Asa Martin Vulgamore was known as Asa Martin: "All of his children and grandchildren were called Martin. . . ." but they used "Vulgamore for legal use." The use of Martin was perhaps because (a) he used a passport to come from Germany that had the name Martin on it; or (b) he came from Virginia and left a wife there. "It is a known fact he came to Ohio alone." [This source says Asa had 11 children, not six and doesn't recognize him as the American-born son of John Martin Fulkamore.] [Source: "Asa Fulgamore Family", PCR Ref Family History, Garnet Wilson Library, Waverly, Pike County, OH.]

Notes for JOHN MARTIN FULKAMORE:
John probably stayed in Hampshire County, WV, (when Asa went to Ohio) to help with his father's 500 acres, which John inherited in 1821.
October 7, 1826 John started buying land in Oho by purchasing 510 acres from his nieces Rachel Hughes and Sarah Martin for $900.
In 1829 John and Eliza sold the 500 acre Dillons Run farm for $2,000 and moved to Pike County, OH. Both John and Eliza signed with an X (Hampshire County, West Virginia Deed Book 27, page 85).
When John died in 1833 his goods were sold. They included two horses, 40 or more hogs, cows and calves, as well as the usual farming implements and 11 bushels of rye valued at $4.16. In the probate file were several pieces of paper: "Schedule of the goods and chattels belonging to the estate of John Fulgamore dec'd to which the widow is entitled without being obliged to account for the same: wearing apparel of the deceased and the widow, one dun cow, two beds bedding and bedsteads, one spinning wheel, two pots. A schedule of property set off by us the appraisers as aforesaid for the support of this widow and children one year from the death of the intestate estimated at $150."

10. JOSEPH MARTIN3 VULGAMORE (ASA MARTIN2, JOHN MARTIN1 FULKAMORE) was born Bet. 1800 - 1810 in Pike County, OH64, and died 1841 in Pike County, OH65. He married SUSANNAH LAYTON March 12, 182966. She was born Bet. 1800 - 181067, and died Abt. 1844 in Illinois.

Notes for JOSEPH MARTIN VULGAMORE:
In the Pike County, OH Deed Book 7, page 366, dated June 29, 1831 Joseph Martin Vulgamore and his wife Margaret bought 416 acres from Joseph's brother John Martin Vulgamore for $500. The land was part of land inherited by John from Asa M. Vulgamore.
Seven years later, Joseph filed suit against his brother and Thomas Barnes and Hallam Hempstead in Chancery in the Court of Common Please for Pike County, OH, on June 18, 1838. Joseph charged his brother with failing to deliver the land and, in fact, selling the land twice, once to Joseph, and one to Thomas Barnes. Joseph said he paid $25 down plus a note for $300 to be paid September 1, 1836. The money was paid and Joseph took possession of the land and improved it. But he took possession without a deed because John's wife was unavailable to sign as needed.
Instead of giving the deed to Joseph, John attempted to sell the land again, this time to Thomas Barnes. Joseph filed suit when he learned about the deed being about to be recorded. "All of which acting and doings of the said dependants and their confederates are contrary to equity and good conscience and tends to the manifest wrong injury and oppression of" Joseph Vulgamore.
Thomas said, yes, he did buy the land from John, but Thomas didn't know Joseph owned it. He asked the court to order John to pay him back. Because John Vulgamore did not appear on either day of the hearings, the Court "Decree as against them is taken as confessed. . . .The complainants bill to be true and the law and equity of the case to be with the complainant. . . . It is therefore adjudged ordered and decreed the deed . . . [given to Barnes is] is void and adjudge to be fraud." John was ordered to repay Barnes, give the land to Joseph, and pay court costs.
Joseph eventually died with debts of "$1,233.72 1/2" and assets of only &$742.38, leaving $490.72 1/2 in debts. Land was sold by his widow Susannah to pay the debts.

Notes for SUSANNAH LAYTON:
In 1820 an "Elias Layton and an Elias Layton the second" are mentioned under heads of households, as is an" Asher Layton." Asher Layton is listed along with Elizabeth Layton in 1830. Susannah Layton Vulgamore may have been related to these Layton's, as suggested by the fact she named a son Asher. Thank you for the wonderful information. But I feel so left out. Your Generation No. 3; 7. Leah Barrett m: George Slonaker; iv: Elizabeth J Slonaker m: Steward Castner.

Very true that Elizabeth J Slonaker m: Steward Castner, but this was her second husband, and they had a son Sammy. Elizabeth's first husband was George W Carlyle. If you notice on the 1900 US census Elizabeth states she had 9 children and 6 alive. 8 of the children were Carlyle's, and Sammie was a Castner.

Also note that Elizabeth J Slonaker's sister, Julia A Slonaker married George W Carlyle's brother, Charles Carlyle.

1860 US Census shows Geo & Elizabeth Carlyle with son Isaac NW (2 yrs); Julia A Slonaker and her 1 year old daughter Sarah E.

1880 US Census shows Elizabeth now married to Steward Castner and showing son Geo W Castner (10); son Calvin Castner(7); son Samuel T Castner. Both Geo W and Calvin are Carlyle's not Castners. Elizabeth and Steward did not get married until 1876. Son Geo W was born 1870 and Calvin (birth name Richard Calvin) was born 1873. Richard Calvin Carlyle is my Great Grandfather and his death certificate shows him born in Dillon Run, WV.

My father and Uncle spent much time visiting their grandmother (Elizabeth Slonaker Carlyle Castner) at her home in New Sharon, Iowa.

Down any one know why Eliabeth is only acknowledged as marring Castner, and all the Carlyle's are left out? Some of the Carlyle boys born to Elizabeth are: Charles A; Taylor Edward; Issac Newton; Walter; George W; and Richard Calvin. . .

Would appreciate any information available about the Carlyle/Slonaker portion of this family.
