I am seeking information on my MAHAN ancestors from central KY--Jessamine, Woodford and Mercer counties. Samuel Mahan born 1880 married Lizzie Warner
about 1912. I would appreciated contact from anyone with information or connections to this line. Thanks.

I am getting some written papers from my dad on this. I recall that I had ancestors married in KY and then moved to SE Missouri. Eminence. There is a river and park named for the Mahans there.

Their land grant was signed by President Rutherford B. Hayes. They built a log cabin in 1865, cleared the land and planted crops. Their cabin burned a few years later and they built the log house which still stands on the property. According to the 1900 census King and Mary had two children, one is deceased. King is buried at Welch Cemetery beside his two wives. There are no dates on the tombstone. The following is a letter from King written to his sister, Mary (Mahan) Sturman in Pryor, Indian Territory, concerning his father's death on 5 April 1901. King's handwriting was identified by his daughter, Ruby (Mahan) Wallace. For historical reasons, the spelling is left as written..."Dear Sis, With pleasure I take the time to write you a few lines to let you no how everything is and about the death. Sis, I guess you heard about father being dead. Sis, father died the first day of March, was sick 8 days. He had the pneumonia fever. We buried him down at Welcher where mother was buried. Sis, it was bad to give him up I can't hardly stand but sometimes but I done all..." (thesecond page is missing).

Notes for Minnie Duckworth:

Minnie had a vivid memory and loved to take about her early life. She recalled how her mother would gather herbs and dry them to doctor the children. She said that she and her twelve brothers and sisters never lacked for food. She recalled that they had biscuits, bacon or ham, and gravy for breakfast; meat, beans, potatoes, and other things for dinner; and cornbread or cornbread mush and milk for supper. Her parents always had a supply of homemade molasses and home-churned butter Minnie attended school in the log school house at Otter Creek. She remembered that the seats were made of hewed logs. The new building had a small blackboard which was an area of the pine wall painted black. Minnie said that she quit school in the eighth grade because the teacher tried to make a date with her. Minnie and King were married in front of the fireplace in the log house built in 1885 by his parents in the White Star neighborhoodt. King traveled about eight miles to her home on Otter Creek and took her to the house where they were married by E.L. Tumbelson. They lived in the log house for nine years. In 1913 they built a two-story home. Minnie lived in the two-story house until sometime in the 1940's when her daughter, Ruby, and her husband, Archie Wallace, moved into the main house. Minnie moved back into the log house and lived there until the late 1970's when she moved into a mobile home in back of the main house. The front of the house shows the log structure but the rest of the house has been covered with siding and has been modernized, insulated, and carpeted and stands as a monument to the early settlers of the neighborhood.
