John Jacob Burgoon & Elizabeth, France Information

Ok.. here is some information I've collected about John Jacob Burgoon and his wife Elizabeth. I would like for everyone to view it and tell me if my information seems to be correct or not. Some of it has come from other sites and others came from actual records.

John Jacob Burgoon/Burgoyne/Burgun/Burgan (these are different spellings I've gathered over the years)b. 1715 in Alsace, Loraine, France (now Germany) d. June 18, 1806 or 1811 ?, in Taneytown, Fredrick Co. (now Carroll Co.) Maryland. m. Elizabeth (Callaway or Goode)in 1745 or 1747 in Baltimore, Maryland. For his wife Elizabeth I found those two last names for her on someone else's family tree online so I don't know if either last name would be correct or not.

John Jacob emigrated to America in 1740? I have him listed as being on the ship Lydia in 1742 where the ship came into Baltimore, Maryland. He is listed on panel number 59 at Ellis Island. He was a cordwainer in France. A cordwainer being someone that makes shoes and other articles from find soft leather. He served in the French Army and married an English lady (this being Elizabeth) on board the ship while coming to America. He settled on a 160 acre farm after reaching America near Taneytown, Maryland.

His wife Elizabeth (Callaway or Goode)? was born between 1715-1730 ( I have 1715, 1720 & 1730 all listed as birth dates through different searches)born in England. Died between 1766 and 1800 in Maryland. She was listed as being a Protestant.

This is all information I've gathered from many different places. If anyone can fill in the gaps for dates or corrections please let me know!

I'm related to him through my Grandmother Pauline Fern (Garrett) Mullins. This is my tree from John Jacob.

My info is close to what yours is but: Jacob b Alsace,
Bas-Rin France, now Germany,8-1762 lived in Anne Arundle MD;9-30-1771 Denization Record: Jacob Burgoon,a native of Germany; 4-1780 of AA Co, bought land in Frederick Co MD; 1790 census, living in Frederick Co; Will filed Fred Co Md 1806,probated 5-1812. He died at his home in 1811 in Fred Co, now Carroll Co MD.
This is all the raw data that I have found and all is documented by someone else, not me. But I have found it to be very factual.
As for religion, most Burgoons were & are Catholic.
All but a few of Jacob's children moved thru Cambria Co Pa & down into Ohio where mine ended up.
My line is: John Jacob; Robert;Jacob;William;Francis Marion; Adeline Ann, my grandmother.
At one point, William moved down into the Denton area of Texas, remarried and had 8 more kids. Still a lot of Burgoons in that area of Texas.
Hope this helps.

I am decended from Jacob and his wife through their sons Jacob (m. Prudence Ann Baker) and John (m. Susannah Barlow) (both on my mother's side of the family.... gotta love it when the family tree doesn't branch very far....). I would not be surprised is Elizabeth was not Catholic. John Burgoon (s. of Jacob Sr.)'s wife Susannah was not Catholic until shortly before she died. There is an account of Fr. Gallitzin coming to her bedside and converting her. One thing I've found researching my family from Maryland (who ended up in PA eventually) is that there seemed to be a lot of intermarriage between protestants and catholics (which really confused me since that was not particularly common from what I know.) I don't know if it was because there weren't many Catholics at the time in Maryland (at some times Catholics in Maryland had to practice in secret from what I've been told... though how true that is, I don't know.)

My part of the family tree is from Harrisburg, PA --- Father, CF Burgoon, Jr., MD, attended Harrisburg Academy, Catholic school I believe. He fathered nine children. Resided in Philadelphia suburbs. I came to Texas in 1984. In the course of being a painter (artist)and author, I've met some of the Denton, Texas line. Weldon Burgoon is a Rodeo Hall of Famer and extraordinary saddle maker, still at it. Met Anita Burgoon in a Chamber of Commerce Ambassador's Club and didn't know we were kin; That was 1984-85.

How are the Pennsylvania Burgoon's related to John Jacob Burgoon? How are same related to the Denton, Texas Burgoon's? What documentation for John Jacob Burgoon serving in the American Continental Army?

My first book is going to press in 4-6 weeks and I would like to include an accurate notation regarding John Jacob Burgoon. Thanks. Carroll F. Burgoon, III

This is what I have learned recently from deeds and the Burgoon file at the Carroll County Historical Society.

Jacob Burgoon compilation

Born: ca. 1715 or 17, Alcace, France/Germany. He served in French Army? He was a Cordwainer (Cobbler). Bergun, Burgun, Burguun, Bourgund, Burgund, Bourgon, Burgon are all possible last names in France. One such reference is Jean Jacques Bourgund born February 7, 1717 at Small-Rederching. The baptismal certificate names Joannes Jacobus (in Latin). The first name of boys was almost always Jean (Joannes) and is not always listed in later registries because it was undoubtedly not used. This person was the son of Etienne Burgund and Elisabeth Schmid.
Another possible father was Jacques Burgun born 1683 and married in 1708 in Moselle, France. Moselle is adjacent to Bas-Rhin (formerly Alsace-Lorraine) which is said to be Jacob’s birthplace round 1715.
Ca. 1740 or 1742 – He emigrated to America on the ship, Lydia? Married and English woman (Elizabeth Goode?) on board ship?
Jacob had 8 surviving children (born between 1747 and 1767). One child, John, was born in Elkridge, MD, in 1755, indicating they probably lived there at that time. (Elkridge was in Anne Arundel but is now in Howard County, MD).
1760 – Jacob purchased Marys Lott in Anne Arundel County (now Howard County). This was 73 acres just north of Old Frederick Rd. 1 mile East of Marriottsville Rd. Marys Lott is currently a development named Terra Maria but the property extends across (what is now) Rt. 40 making up part of the Turf Valley golf course. Note: this deed states Jacob was a Cordwainer.
1771 – Jacob takes an Oath of Allegiance to the King.
1780 – Jacob purchased “Resurvey on Three Springs” in Frederick County (now Carroll County) situated on Old Taneytown Road (mostly on the North side) and adjacent to the Emmanuel Baust Church and graveyard (church and road came later). There is a pond, spring house and oak tree near the road which may be the Beginning of this property, which was 173 acres. It was resurveyed in 1794 and in 1798 Jacob bought another 9.5 adjacent acres in 1794.
1784 – Jacob sold Marys Lott to Charles Carroll of Carrolton (signer of the Declaration). Note: this deed names Elizabeth as Jacob’s wife, confirming her first name.
Jacob and Elizabeth had 8 children: Jacob, Peter , Robert, Cornelius, John, Charles, Francis and Honore “Honour” Anna. Birth dates spanned 1747 to 1767. Most (or all) of the children moved away to Ohio.
1811 – Jacob died at his farm house. He is said to be buried at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Westminster, MD (I checked recently and they had no record of this).

The cemetary in McComb, Henry Co, OH if "FILLED" with them.
Their son WILLIAM BURGOON b 6-1-1834 . Perry Co OH,died 2-13-1914, Denton Co,Denton, TX. Long live Mark Twain!!!!!! Perhaps that's where your talent as an author comes from. I have a little of it, too,but mine borders on the ridiculous!!!! Ha! Never pub anything and prob never will! Ha again.
William & Elizabeth Jane Highley divorced while he was still in the war on 23-10-1864 Record at Hocking Co Crthouse. She took the 2 kids (my grandmother's aunts )and lived. BIGGGGGGGGGGGGGG scandal in those days. The "baby was still nursing, I suppose.

So, This is my line from Addie Burgoon to our immigrant, Jacob b ca 1715 Alsace ,Bas-Rhin, France. D 6-18-1806 Taneytown, MD
JACOB;ROBERT;JACOB;WILLIAM;FRANCIS MARION;ADDIE.
Was in tch with Pat Burgoon Wiggins, who wrote a book about our line. There's a sister O'loughlin Burgoon (nun, actually from the Catholic part of the family) who wrote another one I can't remember.
Get back to me and maybe I can flesh out the rest of it.
The big trouble began when "Old Nancy" took the grandkids & moved to Wood/Hancock Cos, Ohio. I don't know the real truth, but the Highley side wasn't too pleased, as you could imagine. Not long after his divorce from Eliz. Jane Highly, she remarried to Henry Kuhn. The man Old Liz had accused her with "trifeling" with. They stayed together for the rest of their lives and had 7 kids.
