Hi...I was looking at your msg. My grandfather is Ruben Gantt, b. in Georgia abt 1900-1905, moved to Brantley, Crenshaw Co., AL as a young man and married Maude Mitchell. My Dad is Mitchell Gantt born in AL. Do you have anything more on these Gantt's? Is there a familial relationship? Thanks for any reply.....Carla.

My father was William Preston Gantt, Jr. He was born in Red Level, AL in 1924. Red Level is near Andalusia. He has a sister Mary Lena Sullivan, who still resides in Andalusia, and a brother James W. Gantt who lives in Spokane, WA. His parents were William Senior and Georgia McGown Gantt. My granfather had two brothers that I know of. Teg, and Jess. Teg remained in Alabama, and Jess moved to Santa Rosa, CA. Hope this might be of some help. I wish I knew more.

Hi Cindy.
My husband is a Gantt from Gantt, Alabama. I am trying to research the name. My husband has told me that his last name (he is african-american) originated from a white plantation owner with the last name of Gantt. Would you have any information that could help me? This is such an interesting history.
Thank You,
Heather

Hello Heather,
First of all thanks for the reply to my message. I have researched the Gantt's back to the year 850. The name was spelled gaunt, gauntt, gent, ghent, gant and several others. I did run up on some census info in North and South Carolina with slave schedules that included slaves that had been given the Gantt name. I am not sure exact years on the census that I saw, but I do believe I copied them for my research. Give me a couple of days to go through my mounds of papers and I will be happy to share what I find with you. Keep my e-mail address so we can chat. It is always a thrill to find a connection with someone. I wish you many great experiences with your search.

Cindy,
Thank you so much for your quick reply. I would certainly appreciate any information that you might have to offer. African American roots seem very difficult to trace.
I will keep your e-mail and would love to chat!
Heather
