ANCESTRY, GET YOUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT

Today the home page has this startling message:

"We are updating the navigation to make it quicker and easier for you to get where you want to go. Your favorite pages will only be a click away no matter where you are on the site."

I don't remember any significant number of subscribers clamoring for easier navigation. I do remember requests to fix the databases, make the site browser-independent, improve the response time, stop responding to customer inquiries with canned, useless responses, have more transparency in your pricing schemes, etc., etc. TRY LISTENING TO THE PAYING SUBSCRIBERS.

Just chiming in to say 'amen'.

I really can't remember dealing with a company before that is so out of touch with it's customer base. Is it any wonder that "How to cancel a subscription" ranks so highly when someone goes to "Help"? That alone speaks volumes.

Ancestry appears to have a vision as to where they are going, and this juggernaut will not be altered in it's path. Ancestry will not admit to bad design decisions and poor implementations. This message board is a classic example. When problems are encountered, we users have the options of trying to submit them through a failing support system or air them here, subject to deletion at worst or offered weak promises at best.

Improving the site navigation - not even on the radar.

I can assure you BobNY, this work is the direct result of listening to customers. Clearly you're passionate about Ancestry.com, thanks for your enthusiasm and concern. For more discussion about the new navigation you can also check out the thread started yesterday on the subject: http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.ancestry.ancsite/10023/mb....

Ok, second attempt:

Just for clarification, would those "customers" be paying subscribers or your advertising clients?

JimLivermoreNY,
Our recruiting lists for usability testing, focus groups and in home visits come directly from our active subscriber lists (i.e. paid money for access to site content) and depending on the part of the site we're testing occasionally also includes active registrants (i.e. registered to use Ancestry Family trees, or a 14 day trial but haven't subscribed).
Now whether any of these folks also happen to click on advertisements... that's not something we've ever asked, and frankly is of little concern to the User Experience team.

Hope that clarifies,

Jay Fichialos

Do you seriously contend that the "User Experience" will be more enhanced by changing the navigation than by having these programmers work to fix the stuff that doesn't work? To find the stuff that doesn't work read the threads on this board a bit more carefully.

If I see one more thread that begins "Firefox doesn't do . . . . ." or " I use IE and I can't . . .", I will scream. Get those programmers working on making the site browser agnostic -- that would be an improvement.

Yes, the same look for IE, Safari, Opera, Firefox or any other browser. That would be an improvement.

I hate the whole "new look" with navigation---as well as the changes in the look of the family trees.

I just hate these and have spent less time on the site since these have been implemented.

Ancestry.com, like GM, must have been taken over by the government, since they seem to be separated from the paying customers' needs and desires.

If you have a subscription it makes no difference how little time you spend on the site- they have your money and aren't expending resources on you. A real win for them.

While I don't really care for all the new changes I have no choice but to use them if I want access to Ancestry's large collection of databases... and let's face it, to the best of my knowledge, there is no other single site that has such a depth and breadth.
