Ancestry.com's unresponsiveness

For over a year I have been trying to get someone in charge to correct the problem with the 1860 census in Kentucky. The problem is that what they provide as Daviess county is Estill County and other counties are messed up too. I used my time to provide them information about what image numbers were of what county for about 500 pages and the only response I received was that they were working on it. The last time I asked them why they had an add on the main page claiming to be the only place for access to all available census records. I again stated the Kentucky problem and the add was removed but no reply. Two days later I got a survey questionaire which I filled out stating that I never got a reply and still have had no reply.
Point seems to be that they have your money and that is all that matters. The only way to get their attention is to get together and complain as one with the leverage of a few hundred accounts there might be some action taken with the problems. Post here or send me an email to join the group to get some action. There are currently 15 of us in the group but we need more.

James, I am sorry we have not fixed this problem yet. We have been focusing most of our efforts to get all census images and the 1930 index online this year. We have tried to provide as much data as possible that will help the most people possible doing their family history.

About 2 months ago we added a dedicated team to just work on problems with census images or older indexes. We have made over 2,000 fixes such as the one you have suggested in that time. (For a simple and small example of the many improvements we continue to make: refer to posts and solutions on this board)

We are working on them as fast as we can. Unfortunately we have not fixed them all yet. The repair team has your request on their list. We appreciate the post and we will try to get faster at making the fixes.

Thanks for the reply Gary but the fixes that you refer to that can be found on this board were all requested long after I reported the problem with the 1860 Daviess County Kentucky Census. I even submitted all of the information needed to remove the problem from the site. (identification of what images were being shown as Davies County when they were Estill County) Yet even today 12/11/02 those same images are being shown as Daviess County. Then there is the fact that I never got a response to my latest submission or a response to the survey asking if my questions were answered.
Customer service seems to be the last thing on management's mind regardless of the number of people IT would help. Genealogy is about accuracy and you don't help anyone with inaccurate pages or incomplete indexes.

You are correct. We do have a very small support staff. Changes to the 1860 census have been slow in coming. We are making the records more accurate all the time but we definitely have a long way to go.

I have to agree totally with James!

I reported the problems with 1840 LeRoy Twp, Genesee Cty, NY Census first on January 20, 2002. Instead of fixing the Census which was missing over 50% of the pages,
Ancestry.com just totally removed the LeRoy Twp Census. Then I wrote a USPS letter to Ancestry Headquarters in June, 2002, and they never even acknowledged receipt of my letter! Furthermore many of the Twps in the 1840 Genesee Cty, NY Census are missing MANY pages.

NOW, I find that the 1790 Northampton, Hampshire Cty, MA is totally missing!?!?!?!?!? No wonder I can't seem to find my family in MA! I perfer to view the actual Census images rather then a transcription which is just that a transcription and someone else's opinion of the actual spelling of Surnames.

James, please include me in your group; Michelle Safirstein; beans@rocketmail.com

Michelle,
Thanks for your response. If the porblems were isolated and acknowledged then dealt with in less than a year's time it would be another matter. They seem to use a lot of "Image missing" or fill up the county or townships with just anything so they can claim completeness to sell their lack of service to others. The time spent doing that kind of thing could have been better used fixing the problem. They have sush a small support staff is another claim and that they are working on the problems but you never see anything progress except the new things that they add to charge another buck. They claim that their focus is on the things that will benefit the most people. I think that translates into we only work on what will get us more dollars with the least amount of effort.
We are now 38 strong and growing.

Hi James,
I just found your meassage from 2002. I am facing very similar problems in 2009: I reported two bugs in the software (two bugs, which -if you are not carefull enough- will ruin your tree within a second), but they do not replay.
I am going to write their CEO later this week.
Best regards from Germany
Anatol
