Thank you for your reply. When the "new" Family & Local Histories was launched it appeared that new items had ceased (but for city directories and updates to previously existing items). That was unacceptable. I did an analysis of all items launched in August and found this to be the case.

However, to Ancestry.com's credit, it appears that categorizatons have been reevaluated. As you have just noted, two recent additions of marriage indexes were added. I was really glad to see that because marriage indexes should fall under the U.S. Records category.

You also replied to one of my post on another message. Thank you for your interest and concern about subscribers.

Rule One: When you do actually locate Meyers Orts on Ancestry, bookmark it!

Try this: In Ancestry, go to Search, scroll down to Europe, then Germany, then look for the category "Maps, Atlases & Gazetteers".
Now scroll down [about 6 lines] to "Meyers Gazetteer of the German Empire." I don't know why using any of those terms as keywords doesn't result in finding Meyers!

Best of luck, BG

Hello B.G.

Sorry I cannot help you but maybe you can help me. I came upon the Meyers Orts Gazetteer quite by accident while online with ancestry.com. I am a member. However, I can't find my way back to it now that I need to use it. Could you give me the directions from their homepage how to find it? I've tried to ask Ancestry.com, but that effort has been fruitless.

Thanks, TM

Meyers Orts Gazetteer for German locations via Ancestry online

I have figured out how to access the Meyers Orts und Verkehrs Lexicon Gazetteer [online via Ancestry], which is used to locate & expand information on place names in 1912 Germany. Ancestry's version is quite clear, although it is in German script. Good practice for me, a beginning student of German.

After I find a location, and print out a copy, I can interpret the abbreviations fairly well with the help of Wendy Uncapher's and Larry Jensen's books. But they advise genealogists to also check Meyers' 3rd Volume for the same location. They say added information may exist in Vol. III for any location, possibly with some corrections.

Can anybody explain to me how, or even if, I can access Volume III, via Ancestry? If there is an explanation on the Ancestry site, I have not been able to find it.

Thanks for any suggestions, BG

These were "Germans in Colonial Georgia" and two "Swedish in Delaware" records. These have now been corrected thanks to Lisa.
Actually I think we both had something to do with and thanks to Lisa it is done. I found another in Louisiana and pointed that one out as well. One problem I see is that when we find a book that we think should be in the US collection, there is no way to tell because we do not have access to even a description. By the way, they were right in that there was a "technical problem" but make that a "tech" problam because Lisa said it was human error. Someone clicked the wrong check mark and did not go back to see if it was in the right place.
I'm quite familiar with the baloney from Ancestry. I'll just send them this paragraph after they tell me "how to search"

"BOOK: New Homes in a New Land: German Immigration to Texas, 1847-1861 by Ethel H. Geue; Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co, 1970, reprinted 1999. A sequel to A New Land Beckoned, listed just above, this book contains the names of 5,600 German immigrants taken from 105 passenger lists. The person's age, place of residence in Europe, and dates of departure and arrival are given, along with the Texas county the immigrant settled in. This book is presently out of print, but can be found at many libraries."

They will just tell you what they told me-which is a lot of baloney. They said if the records were gathered from German sources they belong in World Records. Of course, there is no way for anyone to tell where the sources come from. As far as I am concerned they are telling a big fat story here. They tried to pull this last year. It's all about trying to push all subscribers into the more expensive records. Ultimately, I think it will turn around and bite them for pulling these kinds of stunts.

Databases in wrong collection

On 9/13 I sent an email to Ancestry support, pointing out that two databases released on that day were incorrectly added to the Family & Local Histories Collection when they should have been added to the U.S. Records Collection.

(Abstracts of Ripley County, Indiana wills, December 1931 to November 1944) and (Ross County, Ohio marriage records)

The U.S. Records Collection clearly states that it includes:
• U.S. Federal Census Indexes
• Social Security Death Index
• Birth, Marriage and Death Records ***
• Military Records
• Slave Narratives
• Court, land and probate records ***
• Regional histories
• City directories

As of today, these databases are still incorrectly cataloged. When will these databases be corrected?

We apologize for any confusion on this subject. It would appear that
these databases would be better suited US Records, you are correct. And
we will certainly pass this on as a suggestion for improvement to our
programming department. The response that has come to us from the
Marketing Department when we have inquired about these matters is that
any material which has been published by professional genealogists will
be added to Family and Local Histories.

If there is anything else we can assist you with, please let us know.

Jason
Customer Solutions
Ancestry.com

And yet another month, and still counting. I first advised of this massive problem on 8 Nov 2004. Now, 4 months later, patrons are still being denied access to data that should be in the US Records Collection but is only available by a separate subscription to Family & Local Histories. What stinks here, Ancestry?

We have thousands of the 20+ thousand records in the F&LH collection that have dual access to the US Records collection. If someone is new to the site and want to access one of these "dual subbed" records, they will first be offered a subscription to the F&LH collection. If they skip the F&LH offer and end purchasing a US Records sub, they will still get access to the dual access records.

The FLH collection is the best place online to find out if any previous research has been done for your ancestor and/or ancestor's surname. Also, it is the best place to find locality information (history of places, town, counties, states, institutions, etc.)

It is currently in different formats. Most are OCR'd browseable images with searchable text. Some are just text (no images), and some are images with hit-highlighting.

When you find an ancestor in a family history, you might also find stories about them and their family.

To me, family histories are the 'crown jewel' of family history research. They are the end product we are all trying to make as we research for our ancestors.

Hope this helps, good luck in your research.

N. Hibbert
Assoc.

Linda,

I have good news and bad news. Good news: your two titles will be available at Ancestry.com soon. Bad news: because they are not family or local histories, they have been added to the US Records subscription.

You may have seen some other posts on this board mentioning titles in the FLH collection that should be in the US Records collection. We filtered through the 20,000+ titles the best we could and moved titles into their appropriate catagories. Some still made it into the FLH collection (hence, the posts on this board). Some we put into other collections were they really do belong (hence, your two titles).

The "Abstract of Book.." and "Marriage Records" is about to be launched in the US Records collection this month. If you would like, I can notify you when they go live.

Good luck in your research! Please let me know any other questions you may have.

N.
This particular "viewer" is frustrating to me as well. It seems strange to me that even in the same database (Family & Local Histories), I can encounter a different viewer when accessing a selection from the collection.

when the latest viewer was given/downloaded, it seemed to eliminate the access to Ancestry's "advanced viewer" implemented with the census images.

What in the world is going on, Ancestry?

Can somebody PLEASE tell my why so many of the Family & Local Histories collection are missing images.

Its getting to the point that about 25% of the databases I try to access have massive chunks of data missing.

Here is the latest one I ran across tonight:
Descendants of Christian Shelly of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/BookList.aspx?dbid=23617

The History of Lancaster County is missing data as well.

I've been a subscriber to Ancestry since BEFORE you started offering census images. I've rarely submitted problems. But, in that time, NONE of them that I have submitted have been fixed in a timely manner. It was more than 2 years before a missing county from the 1910 VA census was added. My last submission concerning the missing pages of the Perry genealogy still hasn't been addressed. I imagine that it will probably be years before any of these are fixed.

Sincerely, but extremely frustrated,
Matt Adair

Dianne,
Being "up in years" myself, vision is an increasing factor. I have learned when the particular viewer is displayed that uses only the directional arrows and the pyramind-looking lines in the center, that I can utilize the smaller display above those icons. Clicking on an area of the smaller page in that block will take the display to wherever you clicked.

I also learned to save the image to my harddrive, if wanted. This allows me to open the image in my photo program and in the printing instructions, to "size the image to the page." It creates a larger image for printing.

Perhaps these different viewers have something to do with how the images are created.

My biggest complaint regarding Ancestry is there is no way to direct these concerns to the powers that be to either get explanations, ask for changes, etc. We peasants aren't supposed to understand anything, just pay for using the site.

I normally do not frequent this message board, but was seeking information on the different viewers. Obviously, it is only we frustrated users discussing same.

Well, in the meanwhile, since I cannot travel, I do rely on databases implemented to the internet.
I was trying to look at:

New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial • New England Families: Genealogical and Memorial, Vol. 2

BUT, it's an impossible task to try and find what you want, especially with the viewer.

The only way to move around in the image appears to be those arrows. There is not even a little "hand" to move the image.

Why doesn't the ancestry view work with these like they do the censuses. OR why fiddle around with special viewers in the first place, and just load up the image like normal web pages.

They should post it for free. We do pay taxes to the government along with alot other kinds of taxes. Our family history is ours and we do have the right to find out about them. I don't think that we should pay for this information when we should get it for free. What if someone who does not have the money to access the information about their family histroy then what should they do? There is a lot of us who can't afford this but want to find out about their family what should they do?????????????? Are there free web sites for them? Laverna Jefferson

missing pages

Re: Fullers, Sissons, and Scotts, our yeoman ancestors : 46 New England and New York families. Johnson, Carol Clark,. Mobile, Ala.. American International. 1976.

Three weeks ago I emailed you about missing pages in the above work--I asked if they were permanently missing or if this was an error. No one bothered to answer. Is posting to the message board a better way to get a response?

There are huge gaps in the scan of this book. Big sections are missing. Can this be corrected?

Thank you.
