Hi,

You cannot directly upload audio files as such, but I have managed to work around this. Here are steps to get audio files on tree using Windows XP:-

1. Disconnect any webcam you have attached (so webcam microphone doesn't conflict).

2. Start, Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Audio tab, Volume button (under Recording section), Options, Properties, tick all available devices, OK, select one of the following Mono Out, Line Out or Wave Out (names you have may not match or if unlucky you may have no suitable devices). Adjust volume slider for selected item to about 75% - may need further adjustment for best result.

3. Open audio file to be recorded and pause it.

4. Ancestry.com - press Record audio etc till recording starts. Note: Do not use PC for anything else while recording for best result. Broadband upload speed may affect quality.

5. Play audio file you paused. Note recording max time is 12 minutes.

6. Stop recording when finished. Save. Hopefully you now have good recording on tree.

I gather Ancestry.com reduces audio recordings to a low bitrate to reduce file size. By using a lower bitrate version of your audio file you may get a better result although that process is a bit technical.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Liam

Is there a way to "force" a sequence of events in the timeline?

I've had this issue come up before. My current problem is "Funeral" and "Burial"--both on the same day--and the order is Burial first.

Does anyone know how to move the Funeral ahead of Burial, without changing the dates?
You seem to be doing it for spite.

Time is not a factor, the record was attached recently in both trees and I have tried in the past to attach records from that same database and couldn't do it.

Yes, of course I clicked through to the database and it is the identical record in the identical database.

I have asked both tree owners how they did it, one can't remember and the other hasn't answered yet.

YOU FAIL TO ACCOUNT FOR THE TIME FACTOR.

What worked in a database configuration in the past may not work in a reconfiguration, which can include substituting one database for another and giving the second one the same name.

There are other instances where this has occurred, such as the various incarnations of the so-called Public Records Index.

DID YOU CLICK THROUGH THE LINKS TO ASCERTAIN WHETHER THE LISTINGS YOU SHOW DO INDEED LINK TO THE IDENTICAL DATABASE YOU ARE ASKING ABOUT?

Be aware that some databases are incompletely described and consist in several differently-configured databases - in this case, such as records from different boroughs.

Caps are for emphasis, not shouting.
frostfreedet, did you not look at the screen shots? They ARE ATTACHED in two different trees that I've seen with my own eyes, and were NOT manually added.

As long as I have a tree on Ancestry included in the price I pay, and have family members invited who like to check out the historical records, I would like them to be able to see that there are historical records attached for them to look at. If others can attach these particular records, I should be able to, as well, whether or not there are other records that are not attachable.

And why do you insist on speaking to people as if they don't know what they are doing? I know what the difference is between indexes and original records, where to find the microfilm copies, as well as where to find the originals. Once again, as I believe I've mentioned to you in the past, when I am describing a problem concerning Ancestry, I will use Ancestry's terminology to facilitate clear communication. Your objection to calling their records "records" and bringing it up at every possible opportunity is geting tiresome.

I have attached two more screen shots for your benefit. I hope they help you understand the problem, which is that something that WORKS in OTHER trees, and SHOULD work in MY tree, is NOT working.

Caps are for emphasis, not yelling.

If you really want to save this transcribed index entry from a FHL film (you'd have to go to the FHL catalog to determine whether the film was of an index by NY City Dept of Health or by some other entity) as a 'source' you have to enter it manually, either as a 'source' or as a website link.

There are a lot of databases for which there is not a separate ancestry.com so-called "record" for each individual with code to attach to tree persons.
Here's a couple more screen shots from one of the trees where it is attached. One showing the database listed as a source in the "Historical Records" box, and a second showing the "Source Information" page after clicking on the link in the as shown in the first one. I don't know if they'll upload in the correct order, but as you can see, it is a regular Ancestry attachment.

Either I'm missing something that's right in front of my nose, or I'm not getting an option to save to my tree that others are getting.

Can anyone explain how to attach a record from this database to someone in my tree? I don't mean manually enter it as a source, I meant attach it in the usual Ancestry way, where it shows you the Ancestry icon of what looks like a mini-certificate, and when you click on it you're brought to the record in the database.

I know it can be done because I've seen it on two other trees with one of the exact same records I want to attach to my tree, but I see no button to save or attach it. Do an exact match search for Marion Coakley, she's the only one.

I've tried it on WinXP Pro with IE8 and FF 3.5.5.

Thanks.
Jo
JoForLife@aol.com

Date Format at Upload

In early October 2009, I sent the following to Ancestry.com support:

>> I notice that my initial conversion from a PAF-generated GEDCOM to the on-line Ancestry tree put the dates in YYYY-MM-DD format, but that all across Ancestry, the format is DD MMM YYYY. The dates are DD MMM YYYY in PAF. Ancestry changes the date format for display, but it remains in the database as YYYY-MM-DD. Is there a way to convert all the dates to the proper format without fixing each date one at a time? <<

Their response:

>> We are sorry that you are having difficulty. Does the program that you used to convert the file have options for date format when exporting to Gedcom? This may explain why the file was exported with the dates set that way. <<

My response:

>> I have checked the original GEDCOM file. It is in the proper format. It was the import conversion into Ancestry.com that scrambled the format. Is there a way to fix it globally, instead of one at a time? I uploaded over 10,000 individuals, so one-at-a-time is not really an option. I am going to delete the more obscure branches beyond the mid 1800s, but that will still leave too many to fix one-at-a-time. <<

Their response:

>> There is not a tool available to change all of the dates to a different format. Unfortunately they would need to be manually changed. We are sorry for the inconvenience. <<

I have been using Ancestry.com mostly for the "Records Match" feature that notifies me of new data. But this date format bug is yet another reason not to use them as the respository for all my family history data.

Don Strack

While I understand that it might fit better under those categories, it's been a bugger to find. :)

Lori

I think I would be really happy if someone informed me of an error that I had made. My mothers maiden name was Shirey and I marries a Shirey(no relation).there have been times that I got confused and when I did find the common thread I really had to work hard to get it straightened out. I would definetly want to know if I made a mistake.

I agree that all info should be added by hand and not merged with a single click. In the case of my tree that I have worked meticulously on for the past 3 years a name collector grabbed a huge chunk of the tree and added it to hers even though she was just distantly related through marriage. I was mildly irritated but the info was correct and she did give me credit for the photos. The next person to do this I could not see how he was related to me at all. This person merged a large portion of my tree into theirs but somehow shaved the first names off - Mary Christie instead of Gertrude Mary Christie - Thompson Taylor instead of George Thompson Taylor. You get the picture. What a mess! It does look like it was the work of the merging software. I quickly made my tree private but alas too late I think.

I've been so lucky to meet fellow researchers that tipped me off to inaccurate trees, and I'm still very, very grateful.

But keep sending those emails, as if even one of them is a beginner, they might really appreciate your help.
On the subject of downloading or merging other people's trees, I was contacted by someone who appears connected to people in one of my trees and was offered an invite to their tree. However, when I went to check out the other tree, I found many multiple listings of children in the tree. One female was listed 5 times, each with different birth and death dates for the same person. I did not respond to their offer for an invite because this is the type of tree that I avoid like the plague. This person is either just a name collector or a newby who uses no common sense. Bad if they are just a name collector who likes to bragg about the number of names they have collected or unfortunate if they are a newby who needs to learn proper genealogy research.

The problem is you are assuming they are genealogists vs. collectors. I've run into this problem with my family tree numerous times, contacted them, blah, blah, blah. But to get to the heart of the matter - they are collecting "big" trees to show off, not accurate data! Yes, sometimes, I meet someone that appreciates the help - but rarely.

I suggest you post a note on your trees description field about inaccurate data on this particular family - thus alerting those(like me!), who whould greatly appreciate such information.

Hi Kenny

many attempts were made to upload large and small GEDCOM files from Windows XP using Chrome and Windows Vista using Chrome. After reading this forum, I switched to IE and it uploaded instantly with no problems.

I have also noted other issues with Chrome on the Ancestry.co.uk website. Sometimes when adding data to a person, I am switched to a different tree, when I try and select the correct tree from the drop-down list, it never works in Chrome but it works in IE. When I try to click the arrows to the right of the page in the family tree view, it often does not work in Chrome, I have not tested this in IE.

Regards
Tina

Over the last couple of days I've noticed that when adding census records, BMDS and other Ancestry records to people in my trees, Ancestry is inserting extra spaces after the commas in the location fields. Usually one extra space, sometimes two. I'm having to manually remove them before saving the records. Is anyone else experiencing this?
