I'm not sure what the question is you want answers too. If it is 'should I stay or should I go?' then I think only you can really answer the question.

If you go to the site with the 1911 census I believe you will find they still haven't completed the earlier censuses (though I think they are nearly there) which may or may not be a problem for you. You wont have the LMA if that is important to you, you wont have complete transcriptions of the BMD indices if those are important to you. There may be other databases that Ancestry has that you'll no longer have access to. On the other hand they may have other databases that are of interest to you such as the NBI or overseas and armed forces BMD.

The 1911 census will almost certainly appear on Ancestry eventually, just as it will appear on other sites which also have their own unique selling points. No one site has it all. You just have to decide where to spend your money and when.
My pc definitely isn't the problem, neither is my ISP. It is only ancestry.co.uk that is painfully slow on occasions, and other sites are fine. I particularly notice a problem when right clicking to "open in a new tab". That often just results in the "waiting for ..." message.

Recently, meaning within the last week, ancestry.co.uk has become impossibly slow. Sometimes a page won't load, even leaving my pc for several hours. I come back and still see "Waiting for search.ancestry.co.uk". An ancestry subscription is by no means cheap, and now I find that I can't even do searches most of the time.

I am also a WAP keyer, and have been unable to do searches to help me determine that I have interpreted the handwriting in British Postal Records correctly.

Can something please be done about fixing this problem?

If you are unwilling to wait for Ancestry to launch the 1911 census - it is now available in a '1911 census only' SUBSCRIPTION on that site you mention. 6 months can be purchased. Works out better value than pay-as-you-view if you need to view more than a few images.
I agree the London Met Archives now online at Ancestry are a fantastic resource.

The 1911 Census is currently only available via a pay-per-view agreement on the 1911 Census website.

Ancestry.co.uk is keen to offer members the richest and most diverse range of family history content available and has begun to discuss with The National Archives the possibility of securing a license to offer our own online access to the 1911 Census in the near future.

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing our members with the richest and most diverse set of historical records, in a world first Ancestry.co.uk will shortly launch online the collection of the London Metropolitan Archives, which predates civil registration in 1837 and date as far back as the 1500s.

Date Created: 01/14/2009 02:50 PM, Updated: 08/06/2009 12:35 PM
I've been doing a bit of poking around the net and it is claimed in one place that Ancestry are now in discussions with The National Archives about providing access to the census. Elsewhere it seems to be suggested that the existing scanned images are indeed available to Ancestry and others, albeit for a price, and then it would seem to be down to Ancestry to provide their own indexes, and then get a licence to make them available online.

A six months exclusive licence doesn't seem a particularly good deal to me, though I guess it helps that there was five months between initial launch and completion, and I suppose it does make the ridiculously high prices easier to understand.

The 1911 census is indeed now being made available on a subscription basis on another site (I believe we aren't supposed to mention it by name), having had it available on PAYG for some time (the best known URL for the 1911 census is basically the same site). They will have some exclusive rights to it for some period of time. Exactly what those rights are and how long they last I don't know.

I am sure Ancestry will give access to the 1911 census eventually, just as they (and the other site) eventually made the 1901 census available after it was initially exclusively available elsewhere. I can imagine that the deal with the existing 1911 site might have been that they produced the scans at their own cost in return for a period of exclusivity in which to recoup their costs (and then some), but then the scans get made available to their competitors like Ancestry. However even if they don't have to repeat that massive job they'll no doubt have to produce their own transcription and that is quite a big effort too.

I would have thought that we are talking 2012 before Ancestry can make it available and then I'd imagine it would be part of the basic subscription. Since Ancestry pulled out of the bidding to produce the census because they didn't think it was that important in the scheme of things (and I certainly find having the LMA and transcriptions of BMD is far more useful than the 1911 census) I can't imagine they will release it at any premium.

Did we come to a conclusion as to whether ancestry.co.uk will be offering it and how much will it cost? If it will be 2012 I may as well pay for it on the other site?

xx

As I don't have vast research to do, I have used Pay-as-you-go to access this site. This has been fine, untill recently when ancestry seemed to have stopped access to records previously saved to your shoebox, after all your credits are used.
As I have already payed to view these records IN THE FIRST PLACE, I think its very greedy of them to charge again if you want to view records previously payed for, and saved to your own shoebox. In the past this was not so. This is a recent change for the worst. So it now means every record you may wish to keep, needs downloading. BE WARNED! If accessing via Pay As You Go.

I guess Ancestry have a quite few things to correct but admittedly parishes in London get pretty confusing and they were probably in a hurry to get it all online as quickly as possible. What they have done - despite the errors - is a remarkable achievement. Perhaps they should involve the LMA staff more in fine tuning their online version!?

Ancestry did actually reply to my post on another matter, and suggested I direct any corrections for the LMA parishes to support@ancestry.com.au

I will do so in future.

Thanks for your help

Robert

adamsfamily1 - it is not the Government milking the punters which has caused Ancestry to not have the 1911; it is Brightsolid/FMP recouping the money they spent on getting it all scanned etc.

Ancestry is about the most commercial company out. They choose not to continue bidding, and they have no god-given right to have all the databases in the world.

It is what happens when everything is privatized - see how sport including England football matches has disappeared from terrestrial TV.

Here's Ancestry's response of 8th October 2009 (not very helpful I'm afraid):-
"The 1911 Census is currently only available via a pay-per-view agreement on the 1911 Census website.

Ancestry.co.uk is keen to offer members the richest and most diverse range of family history content available and has begun to discuss with The National Archives the possibility of securing a license to offer our own online access to the 1911 Census in the near future.

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing our members with the richest and most diverse set of historical records, in a world first Ancestry.co.uk will shortly launch online the collection of the London Metropolitan Archives, which predates civil registration in 1837 and date as far back as the 1500s."
try just searching for the first name or second name (not both at the same time) an area and a bith date with a couple of years either side. fiddle around in this way and if you still cant find them then concider that they died ,moved or emigrated or did not takepart in the census. i spent a couple of hours looking for my greatgrandfather jesse ruffles b 1850 living in brixton from bacton only to find that he had been transcribed as george raffel born 1849 so a little bit of hunting and latral thinking and you might find them.

its a real shame that we are going to have to wait for the 1911 census to be up here on ancestry but you know as well as i the government will milk the 1911 for as long as they can. only when intrest starts to fall as it did with the 1901 will they let others onto the band wagon.

mean while i know this is not the soulotion for all but if you live near a center such as the family history centre or the sog in london (i am lucky i know living in london) who offer free access then take advantage. (find out if your lib' does)

the other thing you could do is if more than one of you in your family are tracing your ancestors then one of you could take out a sub for findmypast and the other for ancestry then give each other a visit/call and both of you can take advantage of both sites. it works well for my sister and i this way as we can compare notes. if one of you find something on one site the other can look on the other after all two heads are better than one. and whats a cost of a phone call between family. and family is important to us after all!
Just grandparents etc then credits might be cheaper

Mind you if folk are not easily found in current search it may take looking at images before they are found for sure

I think that it will be at least several years and at most very many before Ancestry gets the UK 1911 Census.

Ancestry decided to pull out of the negotiations, as stated above ("will not add much..."). It all depends - the 1911 has broken down two brick walls for me.

Ancestry's stance seems odd, as it is nearly ten years on from us all going ape over the 1901.

Now subscription 1911C is being made available by Findmypast later this month, we need to know whether to join them, or wait until Ancestry get it. Surely Ancestry could release how their "talks" with the National Archives are getting on? They've been having them since January 2009!! Anybody heard anything?

I'm already an Ancestry member and it'd just be my luck to pay for Findmypast membership and then for Ancestry to announce its release on their site.

Thank you Ronald for replying to my message. However, you are seeing something that I can't. In my view there are no parish entries for Southwark St Saviours for 1674-1704. There is a gap between 1653-1673 and 1705-1713.

I'm baffled how you can see a view that I can't.

By the way, it's been two weeks since I sent this query directly to Ancestry. I only used the Message Board because they hadn't replied. I guess their promise of replying within a couple of days doesn't mean much.

Also had problems finding my Uncle on 1911 Census, he was born in Dagnall Bucks, but on the 1911 census form he had written Devonshire, Dagnall, so consequently didn't come up as Dagnall Bucks, but as Devonshire Dagnall, can only assume that he lived in a road called Devonshire. When you get all records for the name search you will have to check then all to see if the same thing has occurred in your case. Tried to get this entry altered by Census 1911 to correct place of birth, but they would not alter it.

Good researching - don't give up hope.

When using Ancestry via FTM it used to be necessary to use the 'View others on page' link to select the record for another member of the household as just clicking on a name didn't update the record that FTM would use for a web merge. This is no longer the case with the 1871 census which now works with FTM as one would hope it would.

I suspect the 'View others on page' has been removed because they think they've fixed a bug and no longer need it, forgetting what it was there for in the first place and that not everyone uses FTM either. Either that or they think the new multi-pane display for the census image replaces it. They'd be wrong as very few links on that new style page actually work properly.
