I have been looking for Daniel Gallagher who came from Scotland in January of 1907 according to his Petition for Naturalization and his 1911 passenger record. I cannot find it on Ancestry but it comes up on the Ellis Island site. We cannot capture the image for our files from the Ellis Island site as they have disabled the function to be able to do this. I would really like to be able to pull this up on Ancestry so I can have this for my files. Are Ancestry's files not complete??

Missing Boston Manifests

If you are searching for arrivals in Boston using ancestry, NARA films or FHL films, you will not find any arrivals between April 1, 1874 and December 31, 1882.

Apparently these records were lost in a Boston fire in May 1894. When searching ancestry, no mention is made in the database description that there are almost 8 years of missing manifests.
=================================
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has records in the Massachusetts archives that replicate many of these missing records. From their on-going volunteer project, at least 76,498 records exist for the missing timeframe.

You can search them at:
http://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcsrch/PassengerManifestSear...

Hi

I have located an ancestor, Mary McGraw, who immigrated to USA from Scotland aboard the SS Ethiopia arriving ellis island 23 Dec 1904. I can read most of the original ship manifest text however the final destination of New York has been scored out and a new destination added which I can't make out the destination is followed by either NY or NJ. The destination is repeated in the column 'whether going to join a relative or friend' against the name & address of Mary's employer mrs w ward 116 University Ave. ???? then it looks like NY or NJ. I have been unable to locate mary in any census and if I knew the final destination this might help. Can anyone help?

Ships from Ireland-Incorrectly listed

While searching for Charles Reynolds who arrived at the port of New York from Ireland on March 14th 1909, I wanted to look at original manifest. I discovered I wasn't looking at the Columbia manifest as stated, but the S.S. New York. What I discovered was that the Microfilm serial, and the Microfilm roll was incorrect. Ancestry had the Microfilm serial no. listed was T715. It should be T621. The Microfilm Roll was listed as T715-1215 when it should have been T621-589. So if your looking for a manifest and can't find it, make sure the info listed is correct.

Thanks so much for answering. Because I'm rather slow at times what you're saying is that you went into Charles Reynold, who arrived 14 Mar. 1909 and departed from Londonderry on the Columbia and had no trouble seeing the manifest. If you could only see the Prencipe di Piemonte and not the Columbia, please tell me how I get into the manifest of the Columbia.I should know this, but don't. Thanks for your help.

I tried to re-create this error, but could not.

When you use ancestry.com to search for Charles Reynolds, indeed, you do not get the Columbia manifest, but the manifest for Principe di Piemonte.

However both manifests are on Roll T715-1215. They arrived a day apart and the Principe di Piemonte is in Volume 2675 and the Columbia in Volume 2676.

There is no way that a manifest would be found in Series T621, as that series contains soundexed indices T621-589 contains R543 through R552.

I contacted Ancestry with no reply so I'm hoping maybe one of you can help. I found some records in the New York Passenger Lists and I clicked on the "order copy" but it doesn't do anything. A new box pops up on my screen and it just runs and runs as if it's going to do something but doesn't. Has anyone else had this problem? And if so, is there anything I can do to get this task accomplished? Thanks for your time!!

How complete are the transcribed ship manifests in Ancestry's Immigration Collection?

Totally frustrated at this point!

I have found that an ancestor of mine traveled aboard the vessel "Plutarch" from Liverpool to New York bet. 1855 - 1857. (This info from the New York Emigrant Savings Bank Records also available at Ancestry.com)

My research shows that this particular ship was not even in service until 1856 so that 1855 date is clearly wrong BUT even though I have checked EVERY manifest for the "Plutarch" I cannot find my ancestor on any of them.

Realizing that it could be a transcription error, I even went the route of checking EVERY page of EVERY actual manifest and still came up empty.

Can anyone advise if EVERY extant manifest has been transcribed and included in this database?

Thanks!
Kathy

Denis Shanahan
Known sailing dates for Plutarch:
29 October 1856
17 Jul 1857
16 Nov 1857
26 Apr 1858
13 Sep 1858
12 May 1859
15 Sep 1859
I have 4 relatives that I know for sure were on the Marine Jumper, 28 May 1949. I have been unable to locate their names in the index for the New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957. I have now determined why they are not in the index.

The microfilm for this ship is for the crew and employees only. I then went to the month of May 1949 for this database. I checked a sampling of the ships and all images were for the crew and employees only. There were no passengers on the lists digitalized. The sampling I did was to go to the first ship for each day of the month of May in 1949 and checked the images. For all 31 days of May I checked 1 ship manifest and for each one the images are for the crew and employees only.

I did not check other months in 1949 or any other year so I don't know how many months or years are missing the passengers.

I contacted Tech Support about this and have not received a reply yet.

Kathy

Let me ask a followup question of Gary. I help people access the databases of Ancestry, especially the Census iformation, at my NARA branch where I volunteer. We have Ancestry Plus there....not sure what it all includes, but thought it would include most of the databases that Ancestry has. I tried to access the new Immigration Collection by typing in John Smith and 1850 to 1859 and got no hits. I also couldn't access from NARA any of the ship manifest images, although I could enter names into the search engine and get to a list of ship names by month and year for this new database. So, will the new database be made available to the Ancestry Plus subscribers?

There is a problem when using the Search Immigration Records in the Ship Name field at:
http://ancestry.com/search/rectype/default.aspx?rt=40

For example put in the last name Bruse, and in the Ship Name put in Allemannia. (does not matter if use exact search or not)

The reply comes back as "Your Search for Bruse returned no matches"

Now go back to the Search Immigration Records and instead of entering Allemannia under Ship Name, cut and paste it into the Keyword search field.

This correctly lists the 4 records in the New York Passenger Lists.

The Ship Name field when entering Allemannia did not give the correct listings but the Keyword search did. I have also tried this on several known ship names and still does not work correctly unless you use Keyword search and not Ship Name search fields.

US Immigration Collection - Complaint/Question

I use to have access to the immigration ships as part of my US Collection fee.

Now I can no longer access them as they have been split out into their own collection and I have to pay an additional fee to get them.

When did this occur? It seems grossly unfair to take away databases I use to have access to and make them their own collection and ask me to pay even more.

Tom

Martha,

I'm sorry for the confusion. The database "Ship Passenger Lists to PA" is not included in the Immigration collection nor are the other titles beginning with "Ship Passenger Lists." They remain as part of the US Records Collection. The content from these 7 titles either exists in other databases included in the Immigration Collection (New York Passenger Lists, 1851-1891 for example) or will soon be replaced by upcoming data additions. To be clear, the 7 Immigration themed databases not in the Immigration Collection are:

- Ship Passenger Lists to Pennsylvania: Miscellaneous Ships, 1727-1764.
- Ship Passenger Lists to New York: Miscellaneous Ships, 1839-1885.
- Ship Passengers Arriving in Canada (Letter A): 1919-1924.
- Ship Passenger Lists to Nova Scotia, Canada, 1750-1752.
- Ship Passenger Lists from Ireland to America, 1736-1832.
- Ship Passenger Lists from Holland to New Netherlands, 1657-1664.
- Ship Passenger Lists to the Carolinas, 1774-1775.

So nice to hear that you will continue to add "weekly" to the World War ! Draft Registration Card database. I was worried that you would drop it again and use the staff to garner subscriptions to the new Immigration site. Thank you for continuing to add, I hope, to the Draft Card database. I have been so successful in finding relatives from MD from this database. (By the way, did you ever discover why the Dade County, FL., cards are only one-half eligible and it is impossible in most cases to read a surname?) Hope you finish NY State in the new future as well as New Jersey! Many thanks!

Immigration Records

I need your expert advice. I have found records stating that my ancestors immigrated to the U.S. in 1874, arriving at the Port of Baltimore prior to traveling on to Minnesota.

The date of immigration has been past on from generation to generation as Sept 18, 1879, not 1874 as recorded in volume 8 of the Leo Baca reference guide. In fact, one of the children was not even born until 2 years later...

Question: How do I find an accurate date?
Could the error be in the NARA records or just in Leo Baca's guide?

Name: Franz Prokosch
Year: 1874
Age: 37
Place: Baltimore
Source Publication Code: 206.6
Primary Immigrant: Prokosch, Franz
Annotation: Date and port of arrival. Also includes country of origin and name of ship. Place of intended destination may also be provided. Extracted from National Archives Microcopy 255, rolls 1 through 31.
Source Bibliography: BACA, LEO. Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, Volume VIII. Richardson, TX: Author, 1707 Woodcreek, Richardson, TX 75082, 1999. 192p.
Page: 127

Other family members included: Barbara (Wife), Josef, Georg, Barbara (daughter), , Magdalena, Marie

What are your recomendations?

Mark

They came here, I believe, between 1915 and 1920. I am at a loss as I cannot find anything on them. They allegedly came here from Germany but were in austro/hungary. Anyway, I would appreciate any info anyone has. Because we found all the information in March we can find them using the ship name, but without that information they are lost.

What happened to the list?

Last week we added San Francisco Passenger Lists to the Ancestry.com US Immigration Collection. The initial release contains approximately 250,000 names from 1890-1916 and will be added to regularly over the next several months until complete.

When finished, this index will contain a list of individuals who entered the port of San Francisco between the years of 1890-1953.

L.
Searching the New York Passenger List collection at Ancestry.com is probably the best place to start. (See http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/default.aspx?rt=40 )

Write down everything you already know about the families, including any dates where you know they are already in the US. Another key database to try is the New York Petitions for Naturalization Index (if they became citizens at some point).

There are also Brody, Frankel, and Zarcone surname message boards where you could post this same question.

This message board is mainly for posting what is new at Ancestry.com in the US Immigration collection and reporting any problems you may have with the Immigration search pages.

Thanks,
L.

Last Friday we added approximately 150,000 new names to the New York Petitions for Naturalization database, adding additional years from 1907-1929.

This update has linked images to the index cards, which include the immigrants name and a reference number that can be used to find further information about the immigrant. Because dates were not noted during this time period, all of the cards appear under "Unknown date".

The next scheduled release for the US Immigration Collection is the first installment of San Francisco Passenger Lists a major database that we will be working on throughout the summer.

Best regards,
L.
I will research this question and get back to you. I hestitate to say that any of our collections is 100% complete, it is generally as complete as our source of the data.

I was wondering if the NYC Passenger Lists are *known* to be completely scanned, indexed, and linked. I know from the Hamburg index that the ship "Doctor Barth" left in the spring of 1873 or 1874 (don't remember off-hand which it is), but the Ancestry.com shows the Dr. Barth only up until the very end of 1872. Could this be an oversight of some sort?

Thank you,
Rich

(P.S. I did e-mail support, but got a canned answer about the fact that they can't do private research for individuals.)

DITTO! I'd thought I was losing my mind.......I've been a subscriber for 4 years, and it was always part of my subscription. I never received notification that I would now have to pay an additional fee to access this database.
I'm losing my respect for Ancestry.com.

I believe it is the Court of Common Pleas, though you may want to contact Gale Research Co. directly to see if they can help.

Josh, thanks for the clarification. I guess I will wait to subscribe until the immigration records are sorted out and I can be sure to find what I'm looking for, where I'm looking. It can be most frustrating to subcribe to a specialized collection, only to find the records you NEED are not in that specialized collection, but in a different one you aren't subscribed to. In all fairness to us, the "unknowing" customer, though, I think Ancestry should remove those "Ships Passenger Lists" form the "Immigration Records" search until they ARE included in the collection.
