Lewis Gardner was born in 1809 at South Carolina. He migrated to Georgia where he married while in his mid - twenties and fathered thirteen children. Gardner was reared to agricultural pursuits and removed to Mississippi where he owned a farm, along with a few slaves. His sons fought for the Rebel cause and his wife divorced him during the Civil War. Afterwards, he went to Texas where he was a horse trader. Lewis Gardner was a notorious gunfighter and lived at Brownsville, Texas, trading and selling horses at the King Ranch. He was later supposedly ambushed and killed in a gunfight with horse thieves at Neches, Texas while transporting horses to Louisiana. However, it was recorded that he spent his last years in Johnson County, Texas. Mystery surrounds him.
