I am researching mysterious outlaws known as the
Gardner Gang. I have had no luck in finding anything about these desperadoes. I have only found one news article.
It was a news article in 1928 written in
Decatur,
Illinois about Herbert Cody
Blake, a Wild West performer hunting for treasure buried by the gang. According to
Blake and several writers, the
Gardner boys had robbed a smuggler's pack train from Mexico, stealing gold bars and jewels. The outlaws fled to the
Guadalupe Mountains where the gunmen buried the loot in one of the caves of the
New Mexico Territory.
Although the treasure is likely a myth, the
Gardner boys were the real deal. Blake had searched the Gardners through old newspapers and long time residents of the Southwest. The notorious
Gardner boys of course have been forgotten today, but hopefully these forgotten notorious gunfighters named
Gardner will live on.
Does anyone know of any bad men named
Gardner in the Wild West?
I have a number of candidates but this has been very difficult.
Best,
Corey
