My great-great grandfather was Adlai Hardin and my great-great grandmother was Dixie. I too, have been told that we are somehow related to John Wesley, but haven't been able to find a link.

Adlai and Dixie's daughter Adlai, was my great-grandmother, and her daughter Susie was my grandmother.

Hi Susan! I was so excited to read your message. What part of the country were your Adlai and Dixie Hardin from? And can you give me a time frame of when they lived? My great grandparents must have been born in the latter part of the 19th century. I'm not sure where they lived, possibly Marrianna, Arkansas? They were strict southern Baptists. We know there was a riverboat gambler in the Hardin line somewhere too.
I look forward to hearing from you again! Lxxx

Hi, I just reread your message. Was it unusual for a man's name Adlai to be given to a daughter? Did you have an uncle or grand uncle named Irvin or Irving?

Hope to hear from your soo!

Hi Laura, This is so much fun! "Dixie" was actually Cordelia Ophelia Evalina Jones (according to my grandmother.) She was born in abt. 1859 in Limestone County Alabama. Adlai is more difficult. I know that he was in the 2nd North Carolina Calvalry during the Civil War. My great uncle Hal has a photograph and I've seen his enlistment papers. They must have eventually lived in Marianna Arkansas, because that is where my great-grandmother Adlai Evalina Hardin, as well as my grandmother Ophelia Susie Bass were born. It was unusual to name a girl Adlai, but they didn't think they'd have any more children. Dixie had been married to Melvin Hardin (Adlai's brother first) when he died, she married Adlai.

Who do you descend from?

Hi Susan
My dad used to talk about the Bass family, they were relatives of his. Sadly he died 2 years ago, but I'm going to pass your info to my Aunt Dixie, who lives in Idaho, to see if what you are writing rings any bells with her. I'm on vacation now until the end of the month, so I won't be able to write anymore. But I'll definitely pick up when I get back. Stay tuned.....and thanks for responding!

Hi Susan
Good news - we're related! I sent your info to my aunt Dixie and she responded with the following:

She said that your grandmother is her cousin.

She said:

"Adlai Hardin was the first child of Cordelia's (Dixie, my middle name is Dixie, after her.) I never knew her second husband's name until I received your email. With him, she produced 5 more offspring, my father, Irvin Hardin, was the youngest. He was born and raised in Marianna, Arkansas. I have been unable to find the year of his birth, his date of birth is April 23rd to the best of my recollection.

Adlai Hardin married Roy Bass and had a herd of children. Cousin James attended San Diego State College and subsequently taught sports in the school system, his wife was Ellen and I believe they had 2 or three children. Hal, was a very very handsome fellow but I don't remember any more about him. Roy Junior was a career Air Force officer, and flew spy planes in Europe, I believe. I don't remember much about Ophelia.

The other offspring were Marian (She married Clyde Mitchell), Lillian (Can't remember husbands name.), Minnie (Married Robert Tucker.), Richard or Dick, can't remember his wife's name.

My dad, Irvin Hardin, was married twice. The first wife was named Myrtle, they had Irvin Junior and Ruth Jane."

Susan, this information is from my aunt Shirley Dixie Hardin. Her brother, my dad, was Adlai Benito Hardin. Shirley and Adlai were the product of Irving Hardin's second marriage to Clemencia Carattini. Clemencia was Puerto Rican, and a Catholic. The family gossip is that Irvin's family rejected the marriage and wouldn't have anything to do with granddad after his marriage. Which is a shame really, because the Carattini's were descended from Corsican's who settled in Puerto Rico in the mid 1880's and became quite successful out there., and are really wonderful people. We had completely lost track with granddad Irvin's side of the family, and I am so excited that we've made this link.

Susan, what is your email address? I need to send you some attachments. My address is laura.hardin@htb.org.uk. Hope to hear from you soon!

Hi Susan, me again. I'm confused about something and wonder if you could please clarify this for me.

I understand that Cordelia married Melvin and then Adlai Hardin.

Cordelia and Adlai Hardin had a daughter , also named Adlai Hardin.

Who did Adlai Hardin, the daughter, marry?

Her son was my grandfather, Irvin Hardin, the youngest of her 5 children by her first husband before she married Roy. But how could his name be Hardin if that was her maiden name? Any ideas?

Many thanks!

Hi Susan
Just checking to see if you received the information I sent you. Would love to stay in touch please, as I'd like to find out more about the family. Also, any idea how we are related to John Wesley Hardin? My dad always said we were, but I don't know where the connection is. Do you know?
Thanks for your help!

Laura
