Notes for John Carlos DeArmas:
Funeral services were held Wednesday for John Carlos DeArmas, Sr., of Plaquemines Parish who died at his daughter's residence in New Orleans at the age of 93. Mr. DeArmas was a native of Plaquemines, where he resided for many years. He served at one time as a Deputy Sheriff, and for many years he was a Notary Public in the Parish. Mr. DeArmas was one of the two surviving members of the White League the, organization which fought against carpetbaggers in Louisiana. Only Jefferson D. Hardin Sr., remains of this famous citizens' organization. These two men participated in the battle of September 4th, 1874, on the river front at Canal Street, when the Negro metropolitan police were over thrown. The DeArmas family has been in Louisiana since 1764 He is survived by two sons John Jr., of Buras, engineer for Plaquemines Parish; Eugene Police Juror, representing the fifth ward, residening at Venice; two daughters, Mrs Lillian Bauman and Mrs Sophia Jermunson of New Orleans; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. His wife, the former George Durabb, died in 1918. Funeral services were held from Lamana-Panno-Fallo Funeral Home and with a requiem mass at St. Aiphonsus church in New Orleans. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in that city. {published September 28, 1946}

Pursuant to the authority thus granted the Governor of Louisiana proceeded to appoint the first Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans. In the month of September, 1896, Hugh McCloskey, a well known business man, and W. A. Kernaghan, a prominent real estate dealer, both of New Orleans, were appointed. They were the first commissioners. The board formally began its duties on September 3, 1896, but did not take charge of the wharf system until the expiration of the Louisiana Construction & Improvement Company's lease in May, 1901. Branch M. King was the third member of the board. Wm. H. Byrnes was appointed to the board in 1899. The death of Mr. King in 1905 created a vacancy which was filled by the appointment of Jeff D. Hardin. Colonel Byrnes died in 1910 and was succeeded by T. J. Kelly. After serving sixteen years as president of the board Mr. McCloskey resigned in 1911, and was succeeded by W. A. Kernaghan. Adolf Dumser was appointed a member in 1901.

Clairemont in Kent County was a favorite hangout for rustlers, and Standifer gave it special attention. A very rough town during those years, Clairemont was said to average a killing a week. That was an exaggeration, perhaps, but much violence did take place there. A feud over ownership of a single cow resulted in the deaths of nine men; a district judge was gunned down in a Clairemont hotel; and Jeff Hardin, brother of the infamous John Wesley Hardin, was shot and killed there.

Clairemont, Tex. - Oct. p.- Last night about 10 o'clock Jeff Hardin, a brother of the late John Wesley Hardin, was shot and killed here. He was at his place of business, when it seems, he and John Snowden got into a dispute about an account. Angry words passed between them, but other parties coming into the room, the matter was dropped. The crowd soon started out and Snowden with them. Hardin called him back and in a short time the shooting was heard. Parties entered the building and found Hardin lying at the end of the counter in a dying condition. He did not speak after he fell. Three shots took effect, one passing through the heart and passing out under the shoulder blade. The right leg was shattered and a ball passed through the left leg,
It is not known that any one saw the shooting. Hardin's pistol was lying behind the counter. Half an hour after the occurance Snowden surrendered and he is now in the custody of the Sheriff. Snowden waived examining trial and his bond was fixed at $5,000, which he readily gave.
