Surnames: Fortson, Holland
I am looking for information on the surname Fortson. My ggggrandmother is Lucinda Fortson (b. 1835). I have found her in the 1870 census living in Christian County, Kentucky, with three children, the youngest of which would become my gggrandmother, Georgia Holland. I also have her name (misspelled) on Georgia's death certificate. That is all the information that I can find about her. Georgia's father was Abe Holland, according to the death certificate. I can find no record of him. He is not living with the family in 1870.
I did notice that there was a W.H. Fortson living in Christian County in the mid-1800s who owned 20 or more slaves. My ggggrandmother is black. I wonder if she was once owned by this W. H. Fortson. In the 1870 census, there is a white William Fortson living near by ggggrandmother and her children. I also noted an Abraham Holland, a slaveowner, living in neighboring Trigg County.
Does anyone have any information about Lucinda or Fortsons black or white in Christian County? Fortson seems to have been a fairly common name in that county in the 1800s. I am hoping to find some links that reveal more info about my ancestor.
Thanks!
