From the newspaper, you should know where these transactions took place. Generally there will be a record called a "bill of sale" kept at the county level. Since county boundaries sometimes shift, or are created out of other counties, you will want to check and see which county it was that this took place. I have in the past received a copy of such a bill of sale from a Kentucky county. If you need help learning which county, let me know. I have reference books here at home that will help.

I think this sale was between Mr Carico and Mr G Smith, he was kept by Mr Carico for about 10 years, then sold to Mr Smith. And I think it was around Milton Kentucky. Mr Smith will free George, he will be put on a train in New Albany with a large family, and got to North Vernon, Indiana

My great grandfather George W. Smith, I was told came out of Milton Ky or there abouts. His first owner, I know of was a Mr Carico, who kept him for 10 years, and sold him to a Mr Smith (1st name may have been Gayland),he kept him for approximately 25 years, then around 1865, he gave my great grandfather his freedom. He then, by way of the Underground railroad, was placed on a train around New Albany, Ind. He got as far as North Vernon, Indiana, there he was met by a Quaker (Mr Joshua Milhouse)He will settle around Bigger township in Indiana). George Smith had a very large family (Over 10 children).

In 1830, about the time of the first sale, Milton was in Gallatin County. In 1840, it was in the county of Trimble, which was created in 1837.

I had a visit by my only living Aunt (Inez Stone), living in Springfield, Ohio, that her Grandfather George Washington Smith, did not cross into Indiana at New Albany, Indiana, but crossed the Ohio river at Madison, Indiana, and he got as far as North Vernon (Jennings County) Indiana. Where he was met by a Joshua Millhouse

Jack, A year later you proablly have the answer by now. Search Jefferson and Fayette county court records for wills and deeds. If this is oral history you will have to prove it. If he freed him just before the war ended the record is at the courthouse. He would have to carry the papers.

What is interesting to me is that if he was free why the need for the underground railroad. Would love to hear what you have found out. I'm not related just interested.
