Hi Mary,

How are you doing? I know you've been sick and had family issues you've been dealing with; just checking in with you again about volume 2 of the Black Records Book. Has there been any progress in that area.

Cynthia, Utah

I do not have acess to the book, since I am in Missouri, but I was wondering did your research turn up any individuals with the last name Savage or Houstin? I am searching for more information on my gggrandmother Elvira Savage and it lists her birth county as Green County KY on her death certificate. Her husband John Houstin was also probably a slave in Green County, but was born in North Carolina.

Jack, A year later you proablly have the answer by now. Search Jefferson and Fayette county court records for wills and deeds. If this is oral history you will have to prove it. If he freed him just before the war ended the record is at the courthouse. He would have to carry the papers.

What is interesting to me is that if he was free why the need for the underground railroad. Would love to hear what you have found out. He also had no siblings- I contacted Oberlin Univ where he apparently attended before enlisting in the war but Oberlin did not have any info on him. I am trying to find more info on the military pages/searches/sites. I am interested in the info you have found so far though! Please let me know if you came up with any additional info- you can check the comments I included in his name on my tree- Genie

He had a brother Charles (Charley) and a sister Kate. I am looking for any connections to Reuben, Charles, or Kate.

Greetings R.J. I saw your query regarding your great great grandfather born in 1859. If it is any help to you, I checked the 1860 Ky. Slave Schedules and located a slave owner by the name of Elizabeth Ross with a 1 yr. old Black male in her care. Elizabeth Ross was living in Madison County, Division 1 Ky. at the time, which is 1 and a half hours from Louisville, Ky. This child may or may not be your man. There is a slave trader/agent named William Ross in Louisville with 2 slaves, an 80 yr. old Black female, and a 39 yr. old Black male. A Joseph Ross with a 25 yr. old female mulatto, and another William Ross with 3 slaves, all mulatto females, ages 32, 25 and 13. Keep in mind that in those times, the double "s" in a name was written as a single "p". I am researching a Moss line from Va., and in 99% of their records, they are listed as "MOP". That William Ross in Louisville I mentioned above is written as "ROP" as well. If you're using Ancestry, or any search site for that matter, try both spellings of Ross as Ross and Rop/Ropp. I have seen some Ancestry records indexed as
"Mopp", and "Mop" when the transcriber did not know that is was really a "Moss". There is also a man named Fountain Ross with a 1yr. old enslaved child also in Division 1 of Madison Co. where that Elizabeth Ross above was also living. Those two are the only 1 yr. old Black males in the entire Ky. slave schedule. Elizabeth and fountain Ross live near each other. They are possibly brother and sister who could have received these babies from their father through a will, perhaps. I have seen several twin slave children in these slave schedules, it was not uncommon for a pair of siblings to each receive a twin from their father's estate/will...children from one of his female slaves. I wish you the best in your search!
April. freedbyluvv@yahoo.com

I am very new at this and I am at a loss as to which way to go at this point. My great great grandfather was a slave in Kentucky - Louisville, I think. He was owned by a Mr. Ross. I gather that Mr. Ross was cruel to his slaves. My great great grandpas name was Albert Ross, but I'm not sure if he was born in Kentucky or if he was sold to Mr. Ross. He was born in 1859. When he obtained his freedom, he left Kentucky, settled in Tennessee, and changed his name to Ray. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
rj

I too am interested in finding more about this Givens Plantation in Lincoln County. I suspect this was the location for some ancestors, Betty and Albert. Perhaps brother and sister or father and daughter. I beleive Albert was born 8/1846 in Lincoln County and died 1/1920 in Danville, Boyle County. Any information anyone can share will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!! ---For taking time to respond.

Gus Champion's father was born and worked on the J. Givens plantation in Lincoln County. After Civil War, Gus and his wife lived in Livingston county. Gus died there at 105 years of age in 1923. (Death certificate) His grandparents were born in Africa hence longevity runs in the family. His mother was born in NC and taken to KY---also lived to 100+.

http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbi...

Also, I'm not in KY...I live in NC.
On the 3rd/ child Robert Wesley Hardin I have information taken from a book by W.W. Hardin. Robert Wesley Hardin born Jan. 14, 1807 left Virg. at the age of 12. Married Philadelphia Baird lived in Ky. for 35 years had 16 children. Moved to Ill. Lived there of some 27 years till his death in 1881. Philadephia died he remarried to Elizabeth Coffman and had another son. Robert Wesley died Feb. 12, 1881 and is buried in the Indian Point Cemetery about 10 miles from Springfield, Illinois. He was the son of Presley Hardin. This all seems to be the same Robert Wesley Hardin....my husband is kin to this man. Would like to hear from you. eburris6@cox.net

Hi,

First let me say that regardless of if we are looking into the same Mary SAMUELS or not, you should not feel ashamed of your family owning slaves, although, I suppose I can understand where you are coming from. As researchers, we must understand that we will learn truths about our families, our nation and ourselves that are maybe a little unflattering. We learn from what we discover. Understanding the times in which our ancestors lived and how it affected not only then, but how it shaped now and keeping those lessons within close grasp is huge, do that.

Now, I have not had time to sit down and really jump in as I'd like, but I do have some information that I hope to follow up on within the next couple of weeks. The information came as a result of a question posed and answered in the Nov/Dec issue of Ancestry magazine. According to what the researcher was able to learn, Mary SAMUELS who owned my ancestor, Alfred, was the daughter of Wilson and Marhta SAMUELS. Mary was born in 1847 and may have inherited Alfred from a woman by the name of Rachel SAMULES, upon her death in 1867.

Does any of this ring a bell? Again, I am hoping to work on this some within the next couple of weeks. I'll let you know if I find anything that suggests a connection.

Best wishes in your research and thank you so much for responding to my post.

If she had a daughter named Mary Sexanna Samuels born in 1860 that would be my relative. I am trying to find out her last name as well. Apparently either she or her husband is a descendant of Daniel Boone.

The 1880 census has Mary A Samuels living with Mary S Samuels in Leaches, Bullit County KY. I belive part of Bullitt County was formed out of Nelson County.

I am very dismayed to learn that part of my family would have been slave owners- if we are looking at the same Mary Samuels.

My great grandfather George W. Smith, I was told came out of Milton Ky or there abouts. His first owner, I know of was a Mr Carico, who kept him for 10 years, and sold him to a Mr Smith (1st name may have been Gayland),he kept him for approximately 25 years, then around 1865, he gave my great grandfather his freedom. He then, by way of the Underground railroad, was placed on a train around New Albany, Ind. He got as far as North Vernon, Indiana, there he was met by a Quaker (Mr Joshua Milhouse)He will settle around Bigger township in Indiana). George Smith had a very large family (Over 10 children).

From the newspaper, you should know where these transactions took place. Generally there will be a record called a "bill of sale" kept at the county level. Since county boundaries sometimes shift, or are created out of other counties, you will want to check and see which county it was that this took place. I have in the past received a copy of such a bill of sale from a Kentucky county. If you need help learning which county, let me know. I have reference books here at home that will help.

Jean Cook
jeancook@aol.com
