German "passport"?

I know this isn't a passport, but it's in booklet form, and several pages have handwritten information on them. A German professor told me that it looks like a document that somebody from Prussia would have if they were a peasant. However, it's from Burgebrach, which is in Bavaria.

The person's name is Johann Solomon and he immigrated to America in 1846. At some point he married Barbara Richter, who also has a document like this.

Does anybody know what this is? And any "history" on it?

Thanks ... Kathy Cook from Grand Rapids, Michigan
