Hello,

Does anyone have suggestions on how I could locate any Dutch Reform church records for the Cayuga County, NY area.

I believe this surname could be Dutch background.

Particularly searching for a Jeremiah Vangilder (unknown birth & unknown death) who seem to have lived in the Sempronius, Cayuga County area before 1800. He is listed in the 1800 Census, a mention is made a Vangilder family moved to the Niles, Cayuga Co., NY area about 1792.

My ancestor was Amelia M Raner B 1829 in NY. Her mother was a Hannah Vangilder who married a Joshua Raner. There is a possible Hannah (Vangilder) Raner living in Cayuga Co., NY born about 1800. She named one of her sons Jeremiah Raner.

Thanks for any suggestions,
Debbie Freeman
Searching for my connection to one of the original Van Dyck/Van Dyke families in the New Netherlands.

Is the information I have below correct?? I am unsure that my 6th great grandfather, Peter Van Dyke, is the son of Francis Jacobus Van Dyck? This is my weakest link.

I have more information about each of the couples below, but I am having a very hard time finding definite information about Peter/Petrus, including information about his wife Rachel Hudson and if he is positively the father of my ancestor John Van Dyke.

ANY helpful information is appreciated!

JOHN VAN DYKE b. 1775 in New York
m.
I am familiar with both cities. I agree. I think you might get annoyed with how they deal with snow. DC was shut down for a week because of 2 2" snow falls that occured in the same week. That got them jokes on the tonight show. They had hoped the first 2" would go away but only melted before the next cold front hit. That all turned to ice then the second dusting turned the roads into a death trap. Because there was no salt, the ice stuck to the road like glue. Now the DC area always pre salts. Often that is enough to get by.

I had *no* idea how closely we are connected to the Wiltse family at that time, or else I would have helped you further. I'm a generation ahead of you, your 3rd great-grandparents, John & Henrietta Wiltse, were my 2nd great-grandparents. John was a Civil War veteran, I have two images of him taken in uniform during the war. Would be happy to exchange info.

Kevin

Thomas Stevenson

Good Evening once again.......................
Thank you once again for the information you provided about Thomas Stevenson. The only court information I have regarding Thomas is a case in New Haven in 1643. You've provided me with another puzzle piece regarding another court case.
My search has been on going for over 20 years. I could never get past the date 1663, Thomas Stevens, Southampton, LI, NY. I discovered an article written for the Suffolk County Historical Society dated Spring 1995 written by Henry B Hoff and Harry Macy. They connected Thomas Stevens of Southampton to his father Thomas Stevenson from Newtown. The article provided information regarding his marriage and much confusion with another Thomas Stevenson same period who was possibly a cousin.
I've been through numerous ship lists on line finding a Thomas who arrived in Virginia and another in New England aboard the Abigail. I have Thomas starting out in Southold, LI, moving to Hempstead around 1647 then eventually to Mespeth.
I also have a copy of the book, "Thomas Stevenson and family of Greater London", written in 1903. According to Macy and Hoff the author John Stevenson has confused the family arrangement. I've been unable to find any good source material for the years 1647-1662. Rikers' "Annals of Newtown"...I only bits and pieces. I thought about joining the Holland Society but my reasons would have been purely selfish and I'm located to far from NYC to really be involved....and that's providing I would be accepted.
I did look at your book titles on Olive Tree. Yes, I would believe you have a special affection for New Netherland.
I would be interested in your opinion regarding Thomas and his many court cases. My thought is his family were possibly investors in the new world ventures. My other thought was he was an adventurer possibly a one time mercenary working for Captain Underwood. My search goes on....thanks again for your input.

They tell a fascinating tale of what life was like under Dutch rule.

See http://olivetreegenealogy.com/nn/ and click on NEW NETHERLAND RESOURCES for a list of excellent books

Tell us WHO you are searching -- what was the marriage record you found?

Also, just a nit picking point - it was called New Netherland, not New Netherlands. :-)

See http://olivetreegenealogy.com/nn/ for lots of info on New Netherland and its settlers, plus many online church records, land records, passenger lists etc

Hi Sissy.

I also have many early ancesters both English and Dutch that lived in New York and find it very interesting. I dont know if there is one book that covers it all. I pick up a little here and there. A recent book, curently in book stores is "The Island at the Center of the World"by Russell Shorto. Good but he is a little over enthusiastic. The best source of information I have found is the NYG&B. If you would like to continue the conversation my email is hbell11804@yahoo.com.

Harry

I am looking for the parents of Henry Thomas. He was born in NY about 1746, and was a loyalist that went to New Brunswick in 1783. He married Hiley Brower, daughter of Nicholas Brower and Maria Dutcher and his descendents include other prominant NY Dutch, including the Fowlers, Hatfields and Van Heerdens. I noticed a couple of Thomas's. Is there any children of them listed.

Karen Henry

Thank you in advance for viewing this message. Seeking new sources of information on the early English settlers in the New Netherlands area...such as Newtown. I've connected my family line to a marriage in the early Dutch Reform Church in 1645 but the trail goes cold....................thank you.

After 50 years of research, I have not been able to make a connection to the Buccleuch line in Scotland nor the Scott line. The earliest record that I have for my Buckelew line would be 1676 when Peter Buckelew and his wife Annetje baptised their son Frederick at the DRC in 1676. Annetje Fredericx was the daughter of Frederick and Grietien Jansen. I have a transcription of his Deed in New Amsterdam in 1651 and a copy of the baptisms in Brazil in 1646 for Annetje and 1649 for her brother and sister. Frederick was with the Dutch West India Company. A number of researchers have stated that Peter Buckelew was the son of William Buckelew (born c. 1620) who was from Scotland and was with the military in the Netherlands. I wish that I had a primary source to connect William Buckelew from Scotland to the Buccleuch line, but I don't. I would be interested in your line concerning your 7th g grandfather being Walter Scott from the Buccleuch line. This could turn out to be the connection that I have been looking for all of these years. You can contact me directly at: <a href="http://www.bdouglas_c_@hotmail.com" target="_blank">www.bdouglas_c_@hotmail.com.

if you have Heritage Quest, or access to it at your local library, it has the full text of this book online.... unfortunately you can only download the first fifty pages..... unless you download it in pieces (it's in .pdf format).... there are several other NY/NJ Dutch related books on Heritage Quest including "1690-1890 Bi-Centennial Celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Settlement of the Minisink Valley" (this one mentions Peter E. Gumaer, township historian, Miss Marie Louise Gumaer who sang and recited poetry, a boatload of Van Inwegens' including Mary, Laura, Eliza, and Ruth....

also a book titled "When New Jersey Claimed Port Jervis and Neversink Valley" from 1922.....

my interest is primarily Van Tuyl and Westfall

steve koons, dayton, ohio
wd8dcx@aol.com

Dirck Westbrook who married Jannekan VanKeuren, and 3. Johannes Westbrook who married Antjen Roosa.

I also saw Blandina VanEtten on your list.
I recently came across a book, The island at the Center of the World," by Russell Shorto, (Doubleday 2004), based on records of the Dutch settlement of Manhattan Island which one person in Albany NY has been translating since their discovery in the 1960's, and which is a very interesting narrative, beginning with Henry Hudson and ending with the English takeover. Anyone interested in Dutch colonial history will find this fascinating.

Warnaer Wessells m. Anne Elizabeth Masschop, NY

I'm searching for information regarding my possible 9G-grandparents, Warnaer Wessells and Anne Elizabeth Masschop, who lived in New Amsterdam (New York City) during the 1600's.

I believe that Warnaer may have migrated from Holland to New Amsterdam, but I've not found a passenger ship record for him yet, nor have I found any information identifying his parents, other than a possible name of his mother of Metja Boonen. I've found family tree postings that list his siblings as Dirk, Christiana, Henrica, Maria and Harmanus.

I have no information about Anne's family or her birthplace.

This is my possible ancestral line to Warnaer and Anne:

9G-grandparents: Warnaer m. Anne
8G-GP: Gerardus Wessells m. Unknown
7G-GP: James Vessells (Wessells) m. Elizabeth Tolley
6G-GP: James Vessells m. Don Van Reid

Not much to go on, but I'm plan to search the available records of the New Amsterdam colony to see if there are listings of Wessells names that could lead to information about Warnaer and Anne and their families.

Any information or leads about the Wessells and Masschop families or genealogy research sources for the New Amsterdam colony that could help me verify these assumptions and possible kinship would be appreciated.

Regards, John Reid
P.O.
Dutch in New Amsterdam (NY)

I have traced my line to a John Prince born 1742 and apparently came to New Amsterdam with his parents and sister Barbra all of whom died on the voyage over and John was taken in by the Captain. The name could have been Prinz or Printz as the census in NB Canada in 1851 list his Children as Dutch and Loyalists. If any one has any info it would be gratefully appreciated. I do have a lot of info on the Prince line from John Prince and his wife Abigal Riddle who were marrid in Shrewsbury NJ 1783 and came to NB in 1785.
Daryl Prince

Van Strander-what was the original name?

My ancestors in the 1800's were scattered through out Orange County, NY. They seemed to have appeared from nowhere about 1827. Prior to that there are only two references that I can find on the name Van Strander. One is a listing of Electors from Ft. Ann, Washington County, NY in 1795 (lists Abram Van Strander) and a Baptismal Record of Reformed Dutch Church in Rhinebeck Flats, Dutchess County in January 1770 that lists a Pieter Van Strander and an Antje Van Strander as witnesses for the baptism of Petrus Ostrander. I am wondering if anyone out there might be able to help me with the true origin of what became Van Strander. My grandfather once told his children that the name wasn't originally Van Strander and gave them the impression that is was more of a drastic change than from something like "Ostrander". I would appreciate any help with the name or even and records known about the Van Strander families.

Van Driesen, Waggoner Families

George Van Driesen was born about 1815 in New York. Nancy Waggoner was born about 1819, also in New York.

They had three children, all born in New York. Cynthia (born 1839), Mary, and Nelson.

The family moved to Adrian, Michigan prior to 1859, when Cynthia married Thomas Brennan of Litchfield, Illinois there.

I have not found any record of the family prior to 1859. A family photo album has unidentified photos from Syracruse, Troy, and Albany, New York Studios, so there may be a family tie to these cities.

Alternate spellings include Van Dresen, Van Dreusen, Van Dinsen, etc. I am also considering alternate spellings of Waggoner, such as Van Waggoner, Wagener, etc.

George and Nancy are my 3x great-grandparents. I would love to hear from anyone who may be related, or have information about them.

Re: Bunts/Buntje/Bunce/Bunch

Harmon A. Bunts b.1838 Ellsworth, OH, is found in the home of Richard & Catherine Bunts, 1860 Ravenna,Portage Co., OH. Later that summmer he is found in the home of Benjamin & Henrietta Bunts in Brimsfield twnshp, Portage Co., OH. It appears that Richard is his father & Benjamin is his brother. I can not find Richard in the 1870 census; presume he had died. In 1870 Benjamin & Henrietta are in Akron, Summit Co., OH. Harmon is in Franklin twnshp, Portage Co., OH.
This Richard Bunts may be the son of Conrad Bunts of Ellsworth. Then again, the Richard with Annis in Aurora twnshp may be the son of Conrad.
I think I have sorted the NY to Ellsworth to Cleveland line, and the Ellsworth to WI line. Please contact me if you are working on any of these lines.
All of these lines relate Oral Hx of immigration from Holland, move N.Y. to OH,and have connections to the Dutch Reformed or German Reformed Church.
