Dayton Ilse Roth Irmgard

I know this is vague but someone might know of these people. My mom was Ilse Roth Watson from Frankfurt AM. Came to Ohio in 1955. Always lived in Dayton, I believe on Live Oak Rd/St at the time. She was friends with some other Germans in the area, one lady was named Irmgard, Emgard, unsure of the spelling. A man was a friend too, possibly husband of the lady. My brother remembers he had numbers tattooed on his arm, I assume from a camp. I don't even know how to find the woman's last name, I've probably heard it but forgot. Would like to know more or find family.

Yes, there were more of the Frech family in Clarksville. Conrad/Margaret were living next door to your Geo. Jacob on the 1870 census. Conrad died in 1874 and Margaret in 1884.
Peter (my 2nd ggrandfather) lived in Clarksville. He married Emily Langston, the sister of your Rebecca Langston. The Langstons came from KY. Wm. Langston, father of girls, ran a grocery store there.
Peter had another brother named Henry, that lived there and married Amanda Byrne. He ran a store also. They had 6 children, only 1, which was a female survived to adulthood.
Carolyn

My ancestor, George Jakob Frech, was Peter's younger brother. He married Rebecca Langston. They were my grandmother's grandparents. As far as I know there are no more Freches in Clarksville, TN, but maybe in Nashville.
I'll be glad to tell you more about what I've learned about this side of the family.

Susan Allen
Tuscaloosa, Alabama

I have the older films of Alswede but not the much past 1808. Do you know anymore details?

Duane Piere dvpiere@yahoo.com

My Schmit/Smith ancestor came from Baden in the 1840's by steam ship to New Orleans, up the Mississippi to the Ohio River and to Cincinnati. So I think that must have been a popular route also. There he met the Thrasher family and married a daughter before coming to new land in Illinois.

Re: Welcome to the new Germans in Ohio message board

My g-g-grandfather Fredrick(von)Thurn, with his large family, moved from Germany to near Sandusky, Ohio, in 1832. They leased or purchased farm and timber land on or near the shore of Lake Erie. Some of Frederik's descendants retained the "von," and others, including my branch, dropped it.

My g-grandfather, Conrad Thurn, was one of several brothers and sisters. He was born in Germany, as were all of his brothers and sisters. He was married in Ottawa County in the 1850's.

My grandfather, Gustavus Adolphus (Gust) Thurn, was a farmer
near Fremont, Ohio. At one point in his life he was a travelling salesman, selling business systems (for organizing and record keeping) to small business men.

My father, Russell E. Thurn, was raised on his father's farm, along with his two brothers - Homer and Haldon. Homer ran a grocery store, and Haldon became a teacher in Milwaukee. Haldon never married, but traveled the world
and was a noted silversmith and jeweler. He made a number of chalices for churches throughout the world. My dad graduated from Miami University of Ohio with a degree in chemistry. He eventually became Chief Chemist and then Director of Quality Control for the Chevron refinery in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

I have been interested in family history for more than 30 years, and have a fair amount of information. I have more time not that I am retired, and have become fairly active.
Contact me if you want to share information. Some but not all)branches of Fredrick's family carry the tradition that we are descended from or somehow genealogically connected to the Thurn und Taxis family, headed now by a young Prince von Thurn und Taxis from his castle in Regensburg,Germany. This family developed the first international postal system (with way-stations, and delivery routes through many of the main towns and cities of Europe). Their symbol was the badger, and the carriages their horses pulled were known throughout Europe. The Tassi family has been described as a bunch of robber-barons in northern Italy during the 1200's and 1300's, who earned some of their money by carrying and delivering messages in north Italy. As the system expanded, the head of the family gained rank and titles, eventually becoming the Prince of Thurn und Taxis -
his holdings were not land but his postal system. Eventually the family became extremely wealthy, with great holdings in land and timber, a beer refinery, etc.

At least two or three branches of Fredrick's family claim to have had records verifying our connection to the royal TnT family - and two claim that almost all family records were destroyed in a fire! Others, as I said, have no such tradition. I am proud of my Thurn ancestors, whether or not they are descended from royalty, but no more proud than I am of my wild Scottish highland ancestors. According to James Michener, if you have highland ancestors, you know that you are descended from some of the most expert cattle thieves in history!!

Nancy, there was the 1848 Baden revolt to overthrow the Duke which was crushed by Prussian troops. That, along with poor weather and crop failures for several years, and over population led not only to immigration but aslo caused the State and communities to "export" the poor and unwanted citizens. My ancestors from the Scherzheim / Lichtenau area of Baden were part of that large movement.

Many came to Ohio via the Hudson River and the Erie Canal and tended to settle in a community of their own.

Lee Fessler

Lee Fessler

I am an Imsicke, and my family is from the Cincinnati(Hamilton County) part of Ohio. Obviously by the last name, my family is clearly of German heritage! I believe that my grandfather Elmer's great-grandfather or great-great-grandfather was the first to come to the U.S. from Germany. My grandfather Elmer's father's name was Joseph Anthony Imsicke and his father was also named Joseph Imsicke. You may look at my family tree for more information. If you think you may be in some way connected, related, or know someone who is, please feel free to contact me! Thanks so much!

Whitney

Here are my notes on Conrad Frech which I can prove:

Conrad Frech came to America in 1832, located in Queen City.
On 18, Apr. 1837, Conrad bought 40 acres in the Lands in Indiana, paying cash. The Record showed him being in Hamilton Cty, IN. The Land Office for this transaction was in Cincinnati. The legal description was #1, Aliquot Parts: SESE; Base Line: 1st PPM; No Fractional Section; Township 7 N; Range 2 W; Section #1. Conrad signed the final document.
He moved to Montgomery Co, TN in 1856.

Is anyone researching this family. Want to connect and share info.
Carolyn Griffin Tucker

Looking for any descendants of Antoine/Anton BOGNER and Regina BECKER, Antoine/Anton BOGNER and Agatha HAFFNER, John BOGNER and Mary ZAHM, William Frederick BOGNER and Annetta HAACKMAN/HACKMAN.

My gg-grandparents were Antoine/Anton BOGNER and Agatha (HAFFNER) BOGNER. Anton came to the U.S. abt. 1841/42. Rumor has it thru Castle Gardens.
Anton bought land in Section 26, Thompson Twp. in Sept. of 1843.
Is there a way to find/see this record of purchase? It is believed that
Anton came to the U.S. around 1841/42 with his 2 boys, Joseph and Louis, and
wife Regina BECKER. It is also said that Regina died aboard ship along with
her newborn infant, Martin. They supposedly were buried at sea. Anton
married Agatha in 1846.

Anton BOGNER died in Thompson Twp. on May 17, 1883. Is there a way for me to
find/see his obit or death record? To find where he might be buried? I
thought that they belonged to a St. Joseph Parish, but that they merged with
a St. Mary's Parish. I looked in those cemeteries, but didn't find them.

Very willing to share whatever I have on these families!
Thank you!
Joyce
Hi,
My search began with the 1850 census for Cincinnati where I found Eliza Meissner /born about 1800, New Jersey; and daughter, Amelia / born 1838, Pennsylvania. There is no father (born in Germany) or other siblings listed. I know the cholera epidemic came through Cincinnati and killed many Germans. The German community was hardest hit. I am now looking for records (ie German newspapers of that time, birth/death records, school records, city directories, etc)of the German community to see if I can find information on Amelia's father. Can you help me out?

Yours, Lenore
my email address: lenorebrereton@aol.com

I am tracking several Sommer families who came from Bavaria to south side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the 1880s. One 1882 marriage record is for a Maria Grassinger and Charles Sommer, son of Conrad Sommer and Anna Auth who probably from the Asschaffenburg area in NW Bavaria. When did your Sommers arrive in the Cleveland area?

I am seeking any information that I can find about Henrietta and her family. I know that her maiden name was Siebe and that she was born in Alswede, Westfalen, Preussen (on March 26, 1841 I believe).

All I have to go on is an old letter, written in 1879, by Henrietta’s mother in Prussia to another daughter, Louise Siebe Nobbe, in Illinois (my ggrandmother). The letter shares the news that Henrietta’s husband had been dead for 4 years (1875?) and provides her sister’s address as “Mrs. Henrietta Peter, W. Schrimper #510, Cincinnati, Ohio”.

A search of the 1870 census has yielded nothing. Any and all suggestions as to how I might continue my search would be very much appreciated.

Myra
His son, my G grandfather William P was born in Toledo, Ohio On Jan 8, 1838. He moved to Wisconsin in 1857. According to his marriage certificate of July 6, 1862 his father was George Sager and his mother was Unice, no maiden name given. I have checked census 1800 - 1880 in Ohio and cannot find the right George. On the 1870 Census for William in Wisconsin it lists his birthplace as Prussia. I do not feel that is correct but possibly where George and Unice were from. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
