I don't have a Thomas Willson or Wilson this old in my personal database, which includes most of the early Moravian settlers in NC. However, I may be able to help you find more about him. Please write me privately, at ncgen@mindspring.com

It will help me get started trying to help you if you can tell me approximately when he moved to NC, and what the information is that suggests he was a Moravian.

I'm looking for information about a Thomas Willson (born 1719) who migrated from Warren, NJ to Abbotts Creek Township near Winston-Salem, NC. Some information indicates that he was a Moravian. The family eventually changed the spelling to Wilson.

I am looking for Pauline E. Stoudt (married name)born about 1905 or her daughter Betty J. Stoudt born about 1926. In the 1930 census the husband/father was Harry Stoudt born about 1898. Pauline states she was married at age 15 and Harry's occupation is barber. I have a picture of Betty when she was maybe 6 or 8 but no one in our family has any record of her beyond that picture as the father and step-mother died many years ago. Harry was born in Lebanon County but sometime between then and 1930 he was in Reading, Berks County, PA.

Joachim

Would you have any information on a Benjamin HOCH's time in Ireland. He is believed to have been a teacher at Grace Hill, Antrim in about 1839. He was a son of Samuel HOCH, Missionary in the Carribean from 1805 to 1835. Benjamin was born in Jamaica in about 1821; was a teacher at Fulneck in about 1838, and at Ockbrook in about 1851.

It is believed that Fulneck had problems in placing the children of Samuel (Benjamin and Samuel Jr.)after they had finished their own schooling.

Thank you for any information you are able to pass on to me.

Derek

Hi Kuitems,

Dismissal from the early congregations could have been for many reasons, among the the refusal to comply with the arranged marriages. It was a common custom for the board to select the wife and the submit it to the lot (containing yes no and sometimes blank, specially for missionaries. However dismissal was also on the grounds of breaking the congregations strict rules. This generally temporary as seems to be the case with your ancestor. The best place to find out what rally happened would be the congregations diary, where this matters were usually registered.
Hope this helps,
Joachim

Thank you for the information Joachim! Can anyone enlighten me as to practices regarding marriage outside the Moravian Church. My ancestor is listed as being dismissed or leaving in 1805. Yet he brought all of his children to be baptized at Gracehill and in 1819 his wife was accepted into the communion. I'm guessing he was married outside of the Moravian Church but have yet to find the evidence.

Hi kuitems1,

Yes contact between the Ireland  churches was constant with the congregations in England, Germany, and the rest of the world. The children used to be send to the boarding school in Fulneck, England;
here are some examples of the mobility between congregations;
Rev. Johann Steinhauer III, born in Riga in 1732, was principal of Fulneck from 1792-97, and became superintendent of the Ireland congregations from 1797.
John Mongomery, born in Ballykennedy, near Gracehill in Ireland, converted in 1758, became a preacher at Ahoghill that same year; He was the father of the Moravian Poet James M., served in Irvine in Scotland and became missionary in the west Indies, founding the Tobago Mission, later named after him, and died in Barbados.
The Moravian Church was the First really International Church, dedicating and enormous amount of resources, and people to this endeavor. At one point the was 1 missionary for every 80 members. People of all professions and walks of life would end up being missionaries at the most remote places in the world.
Would there be anyone out there who does lookups at the Moravian Archives in Bethlehem Pa? I am seeking a baptismal record c May 9 1765, from the Records/Inventory of Moravian Church in Monacacy Md,whose records are held with the Northern provinces at this location. I have the catalog listing and reference number from their website, but live out of state so I am unable to visit and do the lookup myself. I am willing to pay mileage, parking, copy fees, but feel the fee of $50.00 that the Archives charges for this is out of my price range for a baptismnal record.

Could anyone help or give me other suggestions?

You can call the church office and they will but you in touch with the church historian; a wonderful kind woman; who will answer your questions. The Moravians kept detailed journals through their whole lives and the church keeps them after amember passes. The have a room filed with journals, pictures, and items from the start of the original Hope Indiana church, it burned many years ago. I also got information from the Hope Public Library.
I once met a researcher, who told me that Moravians often performed baptisms and such for non members. He further stated that these records were kept in separate books and reported two places where these might be found.

I'm certain that one place was Bethlehem which appears to be the congregation records. Unfortunately, I do not remember the location of the non member records. Easton, maybe? Does any of this sound familar?

The congregations of interest are Allemaengel/Lynn and Oley in Pennsylvania.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Hi there,
I am in Indiana also. My Essex line from Hope, IN (my mother's maiden name) goes back to a Lewis Essex who was born in NC. His sister Catharina Essex married a John (greter) Crater. Catharina Crater died at age 95 in Winston Salem, NC (b. 1 Jul 1800 Stokes Co., NC, died 11 Aug 1895 in Forsyth Co., NC). They were married 25 Nov 1824 in NC.

I have John's parents as Jacob Greter and his mother as Maria Frey.

I have lots of hooks into the Moravian church with other names also. In skimming the Crater line, I see an Elizabeth Crater (15 Jan 1787) who married a Johann Philip rominger. Romingers also end up in my family but I haven't worked on that line much.

My Bartholomew Co IN names include Essex, Rothrock, Hitchcock, Reed, Fetter, Zeigler, Carter, ect.

Diana

I am interested in anyone who is doing research on the surname Crater, Greter, Grater from North Carolina. My grandfather was Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Crater from Yadkin County area. My ancesters came down from Pennsylvania (orginally from Germany). I know we also had some ancesters who moved to Hope, Indiana. I live in Indiana and plan to visit the old church in Hope. I do get to North Carolina quite often and would love to hear from anyone following this family line. My mother's maiden name is Crater. Look forward to hearing from anyone with this name in your ancestry.

In thinking about this, I am sure that the research was done for someone in San Diego who filled out a 4 generation card at the Del Mar Fairin 2005. We did "blind" research, meaning that we only had the information on the card, and all the information we found went to them. I think this might have been a family in Chula Vista. If you're up to it you could try cold calling any names in the San Diego area with this last name.

On the off chance it was someone who is in my church I will ask around, it might be a maiden name.

George L.Seivers was my g.g. grandfather. I believe I found him as having immigrated in 1857 through New Orleans. On the ships list he is listed as G.H. Seivers. The year of birth matches and he is from Bargen, Switzerland. That is as close as I can get and until I find something else, I am going with it. I cannot find anything else on his whereabouts from 1857 until 1861 when he married Nancy C. Martin. I have his descendents. I have very little on Nancy C. Martin's family and would appreciate your input. Thanks.
Atonia

1780 Elizabeth B. is their niece. Her father is 1744 John Biewighaus, son of 1708 Johannes George and Margaretha Huntzicker Biewighaus. Her mother is listed as Eva m.n. Becker 1752 Nathaniel and 1754 George are brothers to 1744 John. It is interesting to note that 1744 John's wife is usually listed as Catherine Smith and thus she must be his second wife. This info comes from 1780 Elizabeth's memoir written at the time of her death in Dec 1854, and on record at the Moravian Archives in Salem NC. She was a Single Sister. She arrived at Salem 29 Nov 1801.

She was a single sister, a weaver, and held various offices in the Single Sisters' house. There are quite a few entries for her in the later volumes of the Records of the Moravians in NC.

Presumably she's related to George and Nathaniel somehow.
