Were children typically baptized in the Church before reaching the age of majority? I have read the church minutes for the church that my ancestor belonged to for most of his child rearing years in KY and am puzzled that none of his children were members of his church, especially the one son that I descend from who was a Primitive Baptist all of his life.

Any light that can be shed on this question, will be most appreciated. Judi

My understanding is that Primitive Baptists did not (do not) believe in infant baptism, as they believed the child needed to be able to fully understand the experience. A person could only become a true member of a Primitive Baptist church through an experience that indicated he/she had received God's grace. So a child, while he might be taken to church, would not become a full member of the church until that happened.
