SS Shannon 1885

Surnames: LORD, GARTHWAITE, ROWNTREE
Came across the following memorial inscription in Escomb Cemetery, Durham, England:

JOHN EDWARD LORD, AGED 19 YEARS. LOST IN THE SHIP “SHANNON” WHICH FOUNDERED WITH ALL HANDS, WHILST ON A VOYAGE, FROM LONDON TO CALCUTTA 1885.

I am hoping that someone might be able to shed some further light upon the circumstances of this event.

Kind regards... DAVID.
