My reason would be that I want to give a many-times removed cousin his branch of the tree so that he and his family can do their work that would contain their relatives which wouldn't be in any way related to me and, therefore, not a part of my tree.

Regards -

Wow. That *REALLY* sucks. I just got Family Tree Maker - I figured it would make my job easier updating my ongoing research - but it sounds like it's a one-way street. I have tons of images, etc attached to my tree online, not to mention the list of people invited, and the Member Connect links that have been established.

So, basically, this makes Family Tree Maker (for me) just a fancy way to view things off-line, since there's no way I can go deleting and re-building my online tree, and I refuse to switch to all-off-line.

The only solution I see is to have a second online tree, private, which exists solely as a way to feed data into my real online tree. Delete the private tree each time, then upload the tree from the computer, then browse to it by hand and clone the information over (via memberconnect, etc). UGH. Doable, but way not fun (and I'll need to keep a list of modified poeple).

Too add a "half sibling"; select the appropriate patent's profile. "Add a family member/child", then there will be two radio buttons at the bottom of the info page on will say as an example "add as child of mrs & mrs smith" or "ass as child of mrs smith and unknown father", you can later thru your half siblings profile, add the appropriate parents name if known.

For step brothers and sister you would add the person as a spouse, under the new spouse you would do exactly the same a above for the step siblings approproate parent.

There is- but why bother?

IF any of the people would appear in more than one tree is is best to leave them all in one tree- otherwise, when yous start putting them in different trees you have duplicates, etc.

If they are all in one tree people can still find them using a search.

I find it *very* irritating to find the same person in multiple trees that have all been posted by the same person when doing a search.

I've never understood the logic. Maintain all your people and all your connections in one tree and simplify your life and the lives of all those searching for people in your tree.

For Gail,

I find I am in the same position. I have a family.aft and a family.afa file but no longer have the software to read it.
I have had computer failure of hard drive. My files are intact on backup file.

If you have the software to read/update the files I would like a copy. I downloaded original when first released about 2003 -2004.

Thank you.

Hi ladysurber
If you still have your old pc with the AFT software, then all you have to do is use it to export your AFT file to a GED file. Though I don't believe you will get to keep anything other than the tree.

My first and main program I use is Ancestry Family Tree since I got it back when they offered it free. I've copied the files of the program from computer to computer and even hooked a friend up with it recently. Although I like how easily it is to make reports on Family Tree Maker. Although, I recently downloaded two other genealogy programs to try them out.. RootsMagic and Family Tree Builder.

I think you may be correct.

I use ancestry.co.uk web site so that my family can review the tree and thought that Family Tree Maker (2010) would be compatible.

Somebody on the thread told me that AFT is not related to Ancestry Family Tree Maker 2010 so I'm completely confused now.

I'm very new to this ancestry thing but, being the last male in my family, I think I owe it to my children at least an outline of their ancesters!

I'm sorry my post was cryptic - it's a bad habit I have.

If you can direct me to a thread that relates to AFT Maker 2010 I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you for your interest and help.

One day things will get clearer!

Ron

PS. I searched for Family Tree Maker but nothing found so I guess I'm on my own and will need to rely upon Ancestry.co.uk and that doesn't exactly excite me!

I use Ancestry Family Tree 2010 software. When I do a Historical Search using the package the system searches online which is fine. When I add the citation, the citation is added to the web tree which is fine but I want to add it to the AFT offline software.

I can't really tell because your message is rather cryptic, but I don't think you're talking about AFT.

Of course working offline updates your local data. What else would it update? What "online version" are you using?

I "invested" simply because I like to work offline. However, trying to keep the off/on line is, to say the least, tiresome. I thought working offline would update my local software. No chance - it updates the online version then you need to download and merge (and that's a pain).

Not at all happy with the integration but I do like the offline version. It's very good but just needs that extra tweak to add what you have discovered online.
