Ahead Nero - tearing my hair out

I am trying to send to a relative a file which is too large to go by e-mail.
I opened Nero Express and followed the instructions, after which I got a report saying the files had been burned to the CD. However when I look at the CD there is (or appears to be) nothing there. I've tried three times, all with the identical result.
So either (1) how do I get Nero to do what it is supposed to or (2) is there a reliable program which I can download (free) which will actually burn the files to cd?
